a zombie killing knife. . . help me find one. . . .

Rather than a "knife", why not look into a Tomahawk? That's what I'd want to use to kill zombies with.:D.

You don't have to cut off the head. That just leaves a biting head to deal with. You have to destroy the brain. For that you need a blunt instrament or a dagger-like knife or a blade without serrations or a sawback to get in and out of the skull quickly and without fetching up on the bone.A Fallkniven A1 or a Fallkniven Mine clearence knife would be sufficent.
Never discount a good bayonet too.
We have to all do our part to keep the zombies at bay.

The picture is from Resident Evil: Extinction, yet to come.

That movie is going to be AWSOME :D

About the blade; I always would have thought a trench knife with sharpened knuckle dusters, or at least they have a couple long spikes. Only thing is the length, because those zombies are biters.

Do I sound crazy? A longer (not quite a sword) trench knife.;)

those are all really good points, actually. my predisposition for a slashing/hacking weapon came from the fact that i wanted it to maybe be something that could be picked up from a hiker. . . a weapon-savvy farmer. . . something like that.

i also wanted it to fit into the idea that the first thing someone would do when being attacked is just use something to lash out at the attacker (hacking off limbs, burying it into someone's spine, etc). . . the protagonists in the story are not going to be the types of people that would be savvy to anatomy even if these were living combatants and they COULD be taken out by hitting a major organ. . . and. . . hehe. . . i guess a good hacking weapon is more visually exciting (not that a tomahawk with a huge spike wouldn't be pretty nice to see in action).

i figure i can stock the people with a few different devices. . . maybe a camp axe. . . maybe a member of a swat team that was displaced during the uprising could have something like a lagana tomahawk. . . i have an old mosin nagant m91-30 that has the huge spike bayonet (that thing's practically a club on one end. . . and a long spear on the other -- it might be interesting to see someone using that). . . .

really great suggestions, though, guys. . . and i can't thank you enough.

now, if you want to take up some donations so that i can start buying these (kidding -- hehe, i'm sure you're all nursing your own blade habits). . . .

I just sold a Valiant XL Golok that woulud fit the bill perfectly. Probably my all-time favorite zombie-slashing tool & a serious tool to boot. 17" of blade = good reach but easy to weild quickly one-handed, MUCH easier that a kukri in my experience with both. Thicker blade than a machete so it works well on wood or flailing limbs. Definitely a tool I'd take on a long camping trip. I think they are out of the XL version right now but the regular is still 15" blade.

Other than that a martindale machete would be a good choice. I would prefer the reach offered by a short sword over a big knife or small axe/tomahawk, for zombie-chopping.

When the Zombies arrive all you need is your trusty Bowie. Here is mine(courtesy of Himalayan Imports) with my Mistress to give some perspective of size. This bad boy would take off their head, leg, torso whatever it hits first.

Overall length -- 24''
Weight -- 58 oz.
Spine thickness -- 3/8''
Steel guard
Buffalo horn handle

That's one hell of a bowie.I love it.
I think a short handled Naginata would work too.Heads, arms, legs doesn't matter. It'll slash them all.
A Lobo is the perfect anti-zombie weapon and it can be picked up in any garden shed. It's an edge trimming garden spade.sharpen it up and bam!Instant lobo.
Read the zombie survival guide.

While Hesitate to bring up the dreaded Cold Steel it sound like they would be great for your purpose
Moro Baronghttp://www.coldsteel.com/8

Or one of their many models of Machete http://www.coldsteel.com/machetes.html

yeah. . . i thought of cold steel, actually. . . just because i know that they have acceptable prices for some items. . . .

i bought a blade from them once, though, and it was just. . . oh man. . . .

i'll just say that it didn't live up to my expectations. in fact, i think i'd have rather had a flea market special than that knife (i think it was the kobun. . . maybe).

their pricier stuff might be okay, but after that bad experience i'm not tempted to go that route again.

i'll tell you, though. . . the shape and style of that first knife is pretty appealing.

that is like saying "I have an automobile but I always worry about the slow acceleration when merging, and lack of any kind of roof when it rains". :D

The Chinese paired butterfly swords handle a little better and have the ability to stab and also have handguards. they also draw faster from the sheath than a khuk. course if i was really facing a zombie horde i might bring along a Chinese broadsword. those things have real cleaving power. :D

Haven't we learned anything from all those educational zombie films? A short light fast blade is essential. The point is to make a quick opening in the zombie wall & then bolt. What always happens to the guy who tries to stand and take down a bunch of zombies? He gets overwhelmed by the mass of dumb slow things and turned into screaming chowder. Shotgun in one hand, machete/shortsword in the other, scoped rifle slung on the back & you're good to go. Some sports pads as body armor & a fat leather choker on the neck are also advisable. Oh, and grenades, lots of grenades. But I digress . . . .

The SAR Knives Super Hornet featured in the back of May's Blade magazine looks like it'd be a pretty sick zombie knife... Price is out of your range, though.

Aren't Dork Ops knives made for "deactivating" zombies? Or is it deactivating by zombies?

My suggestion would be some kind of trench knife - Boker - or else one of the sword-type offerings by Cold Steel, given a substantial patina. . .

Though, personally, I'd take holy water, myself - but with a backup, just in case of athiest zombies.

i have a khuk but i always worry about the slow recovery speed for multiple slashes and the lack of any kind of point when facing a zombie horde.

Change the villains from zombies to YETIS !! Not only would the khuk be geographically accurate, but you could start a whole new GENRE of "monster flicks."

Get Harrison Ford to play Nepalese Jones.

:D
