A2 Steel Update

^right and you can sharpen it every minute and edit that out too. As for 3v; that would be amazing, but it would drive the price of the trailmaster up to a point where they surely wouldnt sell as many compared to how many 4034s can be sold. (Probably just waiting for people to wear themselves out complaining about it.) too bad 4034s edge cant last as long as this thread.

Yes, a 3V Trailmaster would be great (but expensive). Cold Steel knows this.

They have decided that instead of making good blades they are going to make REALLY CHEAP blades and just tell people they are: "Very high quality...proven to be extremely tough and strong."

Maybe they have cut an exclusive deal with Bud-K. Can a Pakistani Damascus version be far behind?

So what does this mean? Cold Steel and Lynn Thompson built their reputation selling knives that you could trust with your life. They wouldn't let you down, that was the promise. I will leave it to others to decide whether or not that promise still holds.
Ehem... about that...
You market your knives as the knives you can trust your life with. I won't trust my life to lowest end of budget steel. My life is too valuable to trust it to such low end steel.
Yeah, I won't trust my life to liner steel.
I wonder if they will do one of those 'head to head' strength test videos... pitting the Trailmaster against the Mtech 151? They certainly won't be able to do their normal Proof videos with 4034... unless they decide to just fudge the results. I hope that it hasn't gotten to that point with them.

I guess that this thread has run its course...for me at least. Obviously, Cold Steel has nothing more to say on the matter or they would have returned to the thread by now. Probably just waiting for people to wear themselves out complaining about it.
They also never replied to any of the multiple threads complaining about Secure-ex dulling the knives. Their flame suit is holding them so well that they can't even reply. I guess it's getting hot in there...

About video, they have 3 options:
1. Use the old O1 version
2. Sharpening their knives every minute, possibly break, roll or chip several of those in the proces
3. Stab and slash piece of meat and rabmle about the knife some more

Watch the Latin D guard machete video on youtube, machete got bent - at 2:52 you can clearly see it when Lynn picks it up, and then it's very soon cut and he suddenly has a new one in his hands. I don't know about old ones but their new videos are edited, fake and ridiculous.
Edit: At 2:30 you can also see bent blade next to that jelly while Lynn is playing with it.
Also read the Amazon reviews on Cold Steel machetes, go to surprisingly large 1 star section, their quality is going down significantly...

No matter how you slice it, these things will be turds with handles.
This comment sums it up, if I wanted crappy pot metal knives I would order them from Wish or AliExpress instead, and I'd spend 8€ with shipping to get something that's probably piece of junk not good for anything except to be a wall hanger. If I wanted flea market knives I'd go to flea market, yet Cold Steel is here bringing flea market to us.
Cold Steel will be joining the ones like M-tech, Frost, Tac-Force and Gerber.

Theres too much emphisis on using these machetes and knives to fight people. You brandish any of these things and use it on someone your probably getting arrested unless the attacker has a gun.Theyre spending alot of money on those gelatin dummies jut stick to cardboard, wood those rolled japanese mats and stuff like that.

Yep, mall ninja marketing. Instead of marketing these as tools they dift away into fantasy world of combat and knife/sword figting. In reality, 95% of us won't fight anyone with a knife, and 99% of us won't fight anyone with either a sword or machete. And if you do - there's high chance you'll end up in prison for a long time. To make it even worse, their new marketing is human shaped jellies in dungeon LOL.
I could get former tests, like rope/bamboo cutting, even stabbing car hoods (to prove that the tip is strong), but going wild on human shaped dummies is too much.

Their video of the ranch in texas was good ,processing game and doing real world cutting they should stick to that, but theres too many jamokees that are attracted to the videos with those gelatin see through dummies getting carved up/.That forged in fire does it too.Stupid.

I need my knife to be a tool and I'm buying it as such.
Knife has 2 main purposes and those are to cut and to stab. So when I'm buying a knife I'll go for one that has a handle executed in such way it can be used to do both safley.
And that's the reason I won't buy a Puukko or Mora Garberg. I'm not saying that those aren't good knives or good tools, it's just that I think they're less optimized to do both of these knife tasks equally.

Nicley executed tool is Esee 3. It offers exceptional control when you choke it up with finger on choil, and also has a good guard for full handle grip in case you need to stab.

I wish Cold Steel did more durability testing and less ninja stuff. Any sharpened steel object can slice some meat or mats. And with the way they edit their videos I'm fairly certain they'll definitley fake their videos with 4034.

I have no problem with Cold Steel being upfront and honest about making and selling 'weapons'.

I also enjoy their marketing. It brings an element of fun to knives again. I enjoy watching boots stuffed with meat get chopped in half and I enjoy watching them tear stuff up with their products.

I am not complaining about anything with Cold Steel, other than the fact that the decision to go with sub-par steel is concerning.

 The real proof videos and pics will come from actual honest consumer reviewers and hard use testers that care about performance .

I don't have much hope for great results .

I think a few bladeforums members should chip in and buy one of these sardine cans when it comes out and do a passaround, just for the laughs.

I already see pics of rolled edge and "They see me rollin' - they hatin' " :D :D :D

Right now at Knifecenter.com you can get a vg10 san mai Outdoorsman for $175. The Outdoorsman lite is in 4034SS according to that web site, and costs $25. The important thing is you have a choice. If the combat classics were available in a decent steel, I don't think anyone would complain about having cheapo versions available also.
But think of the marketing implications. How do you sell a $175 (or more) knife branded the same, and looking the same, as a $25 budget knife? I'm not a marketing expert, but even I know that doesn't work. Ever heard of Cadillac and Chevy? Spyderco and Byrd? Lynn? Hello? Hello?
The other thing is the reason given. They can't get good enough A-2. So they have to use 4034! Please don't insult our intelligence.
Maybe the Corona hoax is killing the business. I'm so worried about CS that I broke down and ordered the San Mai Tai Pan I always wanted. And no, I don't need another dagger. Maybe it's a clever plot to pull forward sales.
I regard CS as a national treasure. Nobody else is crazy enough to make things like the Espada. I hate to see them doing stupid stuff like changing O1 to 4034.

That won’t work. By the time the second guy receives it, the thing would be in pieces.

Each forum member could get one piece, sharing is caring.

Then, one day if we all meet up together and with enough super glue the Trail Master will again be assembled into one piece for full 10 minutes before it breaks apart again.

I thought A2 is A2- are there bad variations of the steel ? Busse Randall, and Bark River has been using it for years with no issues. And like Mark Spark said, is the Trailmaster going to sell for 140 or 40 ? Thats going to be the most interesting thing to see.It justs screams Mtech 151 ....

Mtech 151 also comes with arguably better sheath...

How tragic we're comparing Cold Steel with Mtech ? & Mtechs bowie has a better steel ;ugh!
