AAA flashlight

Well, it sucked for me.

Initially I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. VERY bright for its size and almost invisible in terms of size and weight.

It repeatedly came unscrewed and dumped the LR44 batteries in my pocket which shorted them out on the coins in my pocket.
LR44 batteries are not overly expensive, but are not available like AAA batts are.

The Nano is responsible for driving me to a single AAA light.

I've heard a lot of complaints about this issue, especially on the smaller lights. iTP, Fenix, 4Sevens, and other modern brand lights seem to do a good job of having a combination of sufficient threads and a good, tight o-ring seal that the lights do not come apart easily.

I used to have a MagLite Solitaire that I kept on my keychain that would constantly either turn on by itself or come apart and dump the battery in my pocket. It drove me crazy.

I've been carrying a LD01- it's a lot of light in a small package- price isn't too bad either.

^ I'm also ordering a LD10 :)- want something just a little thicker than the AAA light

For the money, the Maratac AAA is probably your very best value. It's a tad brighter than the LD01, but considerably cheaper.

The iTP A3 EOS is the same light in a slightly different form factor.

Those are probably your best low dollar alternatives.

If you don't mind spending a little more, the new Preons have the hot new emitters, and a little better output.
If you get one of the ITP upgrades or Maratac AAA's and run a 10440 3.6v rechargeable in it you'll be blown away. I don't see how this combo can be beat for the money. I don't know what the run time will be but it will be hard to go back to a normal AAA, lumens are addictive.

Just be careful not to run them for too long. iTP does not recommend the use of 10440s in the A3 because it will get very hot very fast.

That's double the power, so if it is an 80 lumen light on high, what is the estimate of lumens on a 10440?

Also, can the circuits take the elevated voltage/amperage??

The owners manual lists the 10440 as one of the batteries it will take, then I believe in the next line says they don't recommend it due to the possibility of heat building up. Granted it's winter time but I haven't noticed any excess heat. I don't run in on high for more than a minute or two and doubt medium would cause a problem. Low is brighter but not much and still perfect for it's use.

Medium with this batt. seems like high on the 1.5v AAA. I doubt the high is double the regular 80 lumens rating but it might be close. It's worth the risk IMO for that much light. If I burn one out I'll learn a $20 lesson.

The circuit is officially rated to handle up to 3.0V. The average 10440 is 3.7V, 4.2V fresh off the charger.

As others have said, a Peak LED in AAA, is super reliable. It's been around long time, fully tested and works amazingly well for it's tiny size.

I've got one on a chain, around my neck now and every waking minute ~;-)

Go to http://www.dealextreme.com they have great prices and low shipping costs.
Crazy prices on things.

Not to drag this off-topic, but in a technical discussion of specific lights and batteries, to toss out the name of a dealer without any specifics of what he offers to this group sounds a lot like shilling.

We're all about recommendations here but we want recommendations on the gear itself. Once we decide what we want, we can find a reliable source.

I thought I read a thread about using the 10440 and people said the light got too hot to touch in about 90-120 seconds. Not really practical. I wonder if there's a rechargeable with a 3.0v or maybe 3.2v max. Maybe still get a nice bump over a regular 1.5v copper top, but without all the fire and burning flesh :D

Actually if I had it to do over, I would buy from Storl . If I buy any more, I will buy from the supporters here. I usually do try to buy from the forum supporters, they tend to be more reliable.

The guys at candlepowerforums.com use and recommend dealextreme all the time. It has a good reputation with them and those guys buy LEDs like people here buy knives. So what is the reputation for DE?

The above link is for Cre AAA LEDs If the OP can define the qualities - run time; luxs etc I can narrow down the recommendation.

This is true - I have been a member of CPF for quite some time and I have placed orders to DX over a dozen times. However most of my lights came from other places (4sevens, Battery Junction, BugOutGear, Lighthound, GoingGear & CPF Marketplace).

IMO when it comes to AAA lights you wont get better value for money from DX than you would from buying an ITP from GoingGear. DX have cheaper lights, but they aren't as good.
