ABOUT BATTLE GRADE;

Two weeks ago I pulled my Busses out of my humidity controlled safe to determine what I wanted to put on the Exchange. One of my Swamp Warden’s bare edge (where it was factory ground / sharpened) was so rusted I had to put the knife on a medium wet stone for about 20 minutes.

The Warden was new and not stored in the cardboard Sheath.

My other Busse/kin were fine.

I don't have the experience that a lot of others here have with SR101 but so far my experience with it has been that as long as you get all of the decarb layer off and get it down to good clean steel, with just a little preventive maintenance, "rust" hasn't been an issue with my SR101. Basically, don't put it away wet, and wipe it down with some kind of oil once in a while and you will probably get some discoloring or "patina" but I've never had any real rust.

Just be aware though that sometimes you might find things under the coating that might make you wish you had left it on. I sanded these marks out of my BG DTBM so it's not something that isn't fixable but just know that there may be more work involved if you want a nice clean looking blade.

Man I would have been nauseous and very annoyed.
That is kinda disappointing. I get it is intended to be covered but that is slipping imo.

Found almost the exact same thing under the coating on my BG SFNO. But by the time I got everything sanded close to the way I'd like, they were very subdued. Almost as much as the Busse markings.

How is that SAR holding up? I thought about it the other day when I found a couple tiny freckles on my blasted TGLB.

It's holding up great! Not a speck of corrosion on it. It DOES get stored a lot still. I'm still trying to figure out what to do with it for sheathing. With the way the grip is, it doesn't lend itself well to the Spec-Ops sheath, and there aren't a whole lot of people that do sheaths for the SAR5. I need to contact David Brown and see if he does any kydex for that model. Otherwise, I fear I'm going to have to send it off again for someone to do a pouch leather sheath for it. It really is a very nice configuration, though. Especially now that it doesn't rust while you look at it.

Thanks again!

You should probably check the humidity level inside your safe, with something like this:
https://www.midwayusa.com/product/362145/golden-rod-digital-wireless-hygrometer
What is nice about this unit is that it displays both temperature and humidity inside and outside your safe, without opening the safe door (and letting in more humid air).

Using both of these should keep your safe's humidity at an acceptable level:

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/628557/snapsafe-silica-gel-desiccant-dehumidifier-750-gram-protects-60-cubic-feet-steel-can
Remember to recharge the desiccant periodically to keep it working properly.

Contact Eric at Mashed Cat. You can send your knife to him for a custom Sheath.

I just received my FBM-BG back and the Sheath fits perfectly.
