About How Many Times A Day Do you Use Your Emerson?

Just use it and don't worry about it. It's an Emerson just use it. Blade centering and a smooth pivot mean nothing, it's meant to be used. Wipe it off, dunk it in oil, and put it in your pocket.

The whole tough appearance just use it thing is fine to a point and then it isn't. I'm a casual user and collector. I don't pull my knife out seventeen times a day and use it for the toughest jobs known to mankind.

It can get to the point where people suggest your not up to par to be owning an Emerson if you're worried about the appearance of it. They'll accuse you of owning safe queens and question the legitamicy of your very existence.

They'll boast about the imperfections that they actively over look and just use it. They'll boast at how long they've used it in that condition and they don't mind it one little bit because they use an Emerson for what it's made for. To be used at all cost regardless of appearance or smooth operation.

So I got to thinking. These people must use their knives ruggedly all the time to be able to overlook certain things. I know I have over looked an imperfect tool and just used it but that was a tool out of my tool box at work where I performed heavy industrial maintenance.

So how often do you just use it guys pull your knife out and use it? And for what?

I think you have to realize that the "rugged look" was a huge marketing tool for Ernest, and as unorthodox as it may seem his company is the proof that whatever he did worked.

Just as Versace and Gucci are able to convince people they need luxury goods with zero flaws, Emerson is able to convince knife users into buying not only his knives, but his mindset and philosophy. Search the forums, there's a few mentions from the horses mouth on this very issue.

I use my Emersons daily. I work a trade, deliver newspapers to fund the hobbies and prepare food, all with my Emersons. Heck, today at work I was using my 15 to cut up TPO on a before welding it on a roof in Tahoe. All of my Emersons are used. No safe queens here :)

I think op is wanting to know why can't the same task be done with a knife with excellent fit and finish rather the Emersons "meant to be used" finish.

Please correct me if I'm wrong

I use my Emerson daily as in the AM I place it in my Left Front Pocket, and at Days End it is removed from my Left front Pocket. Occasionally the Emerson blade on my CQC-7-BW is deployed from the closed to open position, locked up at the Post Office. As I visit my Post Office Box daily to get mail,my Emerson is used to open mail.

I carry my Emerson as my EDC, BUT HONESTLY HOPE NEVER TO HAVE TO USE THIS KNIFE for anything more than a letter or box opener.

But if I have to use it as a defensive weapon I hope my actions will be justified end in the eyes of the law.....

It's a personal mindset/opinion. If you want to purchase a brand new spotless specimen of an Emerson, put it in protective glass casing and take it out bi monthly wearing surgical gloves and only open it to admire the blade that's your prerogative. Your $ your knife your choice. If you wanna go outta your way to find something to cut because using your Emerson makes you happy, if you only clean it once a year, if scratched up G10 and scuffed up blades and pocket clips don't bug you.... guess what? That's your own personal choice aswell.

I use an Emerson everyday. Doesn't matter what for, cutting task happen. Food prep to loose threads. Some of my Emersons are scratched to hell and some not at all. Just depends man.

I guess in general if asked if a machining mark would bug me or a scratch on a blade or wore out G10 then most likely I'm going with no...because it doesn't.

If you feel differently it doesn't mean I wouldn't sit with ya at the lunch table:D

Just have to keep in mind that this is an age where knives can run into the thousands. At the price point Emerson charges, especially for what they go for on the second hand market, I'm just not too worried about it.

Side note, as a knife nut, ofcourse smooth action, solid lock up, and blade centering are important and with the amount of Emerson's I've gone through I haven't had any that didn't live up to that standard. In fact I don't know where you've read anyone saying that stuff wasn't important as I don't recall any recent thread where anyone had an issue with functionality and the advice given was "sod it, it's an Emerson!"?

I use my Emersons a lot at work. I regularly need to break down cardboard boxes, open foam barrels, cut rope, and a multitude of other things as a firefighter. Emersons are tough, rugged tools and treat them as such. However, I thoroughly clean my Emerson as soon as I get off duty. Full disassembly, clean, relube, reassemble. It's not because it needs to happen, I guess it's the Marine in me that won't let me have a dirty weapon/tool.

Blade centering and a smooth pivot mean nothing

who in here has said that, ever?

some do pull it out seventeen times a day. What's your point? Some people get up at 6 am some people not until noon. What's it matter?

When in the history of holy hell has that EVER been done? Outside of good hearted ribbing? Seriously? Ever?

Again, W H A T? functionality of an Emerson has never been belittled, in fact it's a main reason for ownership. And who the hell is boasting?

blow out proportion much? And again just because you do something means what exactly? Some people may baby their tools in their tool box and wax and polish them daily. You aren't proving shit with that

So how often do you just use it guys pull your knife out and use it? And for what?

take a breath, make a cup of tea, and relax:rolleyes:

Oh I caught that. Given that he has less than 50 posts I just went in the opposite of his bait.

Good advice here guys.

I was not baiting nor do I bait.

I am newknife from before but now I'm newerknife.

What I'm saying is that if an Emerson can look as good as it performs then why not? It would be the total package.

Sorry to upset you RiverRat, you're right. I am not the smartest at times.

I mean why settle for a b or a c when you can get an a on a test? I'll use that analogy.

Sorry to upset you RiverRat, you're right.

No harm done and it's all good. I chose to react, not your fault. Was just trying to convey the difference between athstetics and functionality as if Emerson's performed poorly A) they wouldn't be a staple in the knife community and B) we wouldn't buy em up and choose to carry them. That's all man:thumbup:

I use my Roadie everyday at work, hell I think it's in my hand more than my pocket. Stripping wire, notching die boards, opening packages, cutting boxes. When I get home, food prep (not the same blade, CQC13 LOL) process deer, cut up fish, skin squirrels. You name it! Love EKI!!

This statement about don't worry about the pivot, lockup is alright just use it. Have you ever actually owned an Emerson. I'm the most critical pain in the ass when it comes to F&F and my 13 almost came to pretty hell it was a week before I put it to good use (dove season). Everybody keeps a new blade pretty for as long as they can, the difference between other people and ones in THIS FORUM we want to cut stuff ASAP not stare at like a art painting. Buy a new EKI look at it, enjoy the ergos and then go stick in something, cut something. I got trees in my back yard with no lower limbs, just to test out how a new knife feels being used. LOL
