Hi all,

Trying to find out whether the Loveless style New York Special is a double edged blade. Not much exmaples of actual Loveless knives on net. There are others but wanted to know about NYS blades.

Hope you guys can help

I heard a limited number of these knives were made for NYC Police officers, thus their name.
Does anyone know if that's true?

I had wondered if it was called the New York Special because the blade was under 4 inches.

I think this was the reason for the name, I remember reading it somewhere.

The knife was made to come in below New York's carry size restrictions.

Take care

I believe a group of collectors got together and had Bob come to NY. He brought with him a new model they called the "N.Y. Special", there were only maybe 10 pieces made. The originals have become one of hardest Loveless knives to acquire. I was told this by one of the original group.

That's what I heard as well, but was told the group were NYC police officers.
The compact design made the knife easy for concealed carry, so I was told anyway.

Aren't other Loveless models equipped with blades under 4" as well? The hideout for one?

is the top edge all sharpened or just the front clip of the blade?

I'm curious about this myself. NY knife law doesn't allow a sharpened top clip, to the best of my knowledge. I guess that wouldn't apply to law enforcement officers though.

The one Loveless NY Special I've seen had a sharpened clip. I believe it had the snap for the sheath as well, but my memory escapes me. A Hideout is a lot bigger knife, but I don't recall the actual blade length.

New York City has some weird knife laws. You can't carry a little folder with a pocket clip exposed or a "gravity knife' or "switchblade" which, unfortunately, can mean darn near any modern liner, assisted opener or frame lock folder depending on the mood of the police, BUT you can carry a sub 4 inch fixed blade as long as it is totally concealed. Go figure:eek: I carried my Caffrey EBK when I was up there.

Here's a Loveless piece which Knife Legends identifies as a New York Special "Type II".
It has a 3-1/8" BL and is about 7" OAL. Wonder how the Type II is different form the standard?

Here's a Hide Out which has a 4-1/8" BL and is about 9" OAL.

Just goes to show that you can't believe everything you hear even if from a seemingly informed source.
Do you know how a type II differs from the others?
