I've been trying to buy a Busse for what seems like months now. Every single time without fail I go to purchase one, I check the for sale ads and the one I want is gone so I go and do the logical thing, I purchase a new gun. First time I was going to buy an NMSFNO and the one I wanted got sold, so I bought a new AR upper. Then I tried again, but sure enough a friend of mine wanted to unload a BHP pretty cheap so I picked up that. Then I settled on a Battle Mistress of some variety and as soon as I was about to buy one my dog got quite sick and I sucked up a 900 dollar vet bill. Now it's getting close to rifle season and a lucky white tail is going to be introduced to a new 45/70. Now it's all out of the way... I hope. I'm hopefully going to be buying two to start with once I pick up a new scope and sell an eotech that's just sitting in my safe. I wish I could bring myself to use my charge cards but they're "only for an emergency", and 500 dollar knives won't qualify as one in the eyes of the old lady. I know for sure that I want a Fusion Battle Mistress in some form. I'm pretty sure I don't want an LE as much as the NMFBLE makes me drool, it just seems like the money is wasted for whats going to be a heavy user. What are the differences between the NMFBM the FFBM and the CGFBM? Is the FFBM fat fusion or flat fusion? I've seen it listed as both.

For the second knife I'm kind of torn. I'm trying to get away from folders entirely, I simply break them.. constantly. I've broken benchmades, cold steels, spydercos. I need to just switch to fixed blades exclusively. Now I'm deciding between a few models, this would in fact be an EDC blade, backed up only by a small folder for when it'd be inappropriate to pull out a large fixed blade (like work or walmart parking lot) and it will likely be carried IWB. Here are my choices, could use some help deciding. This knife will see hard use, I just seem to go through knives like people go through a case of beer at a frat party.

Hell Razor
Competition Sarsquatch
Tankbuster
NMSFNO
Ash1 in some variety (any opinions?)

What do you guys think? I don't really want to spend over 1k on two knives.

Some of those choices seem pretty huge for an EDC - you have the Battle Mistress for a chopper sized blade, so it seems to me something in the 3-5" range would give you a lot more utility. The Tank Buster fits that bill and is a great value direct from the Busse shop. Maybe a BATAC or one of the Street varieties? Or a SAR4, HG55, SAR5, etc etc etc....

The biggest I'd want to go for a belt carry, non-chopper, is maybe something like a SJTAC. Even that is pretty big IMHO.

Well I carry a lot of crap day to day -

Right now replace the folder for a benchmade LFK (5 inch blade) and I broke that fixed blade last month. I can swing a pretty big blade concealed, but I'm thinking the tankbuster might be a good option for an EDC albeit on the large side.

BMs first I guess.

NMFBM has a 11.5" blade at 17.5" OAL with .25 thickness. All edges except the one that counts has been rounded giving it the "Melt Down" treatment.

FFBM is also known as FFFBM they're Fat Fusion Battle Mistress, Flat Fusion Battle Mistress, or Flat Fat Fusion Battle Mistress, all depends on who's talking/typing and is all the same as far as I've figured out. 10" blade at 16" oal with .32 thickness.

CGFBM is THE COOLEST, same dimensions as the FFBM but at .25 thickness with CBT, "Corrugated Bevel Technology" which is groves running horizontal with the blade to reduce friction and add strength to it's chopping awesomeness.

As for the smaller blade you may want to go smaller. A Meaner is a good sized edc with a 4" blade
or maybe a HG55 with 5.5" blade.

If this doesn't make sense someone drunker will be along shortly to clarify and correct.

And rember, when your guns quit cutting your knife is out of bullets.:D:p

Good luck

You could track down a Scrap Yard Scrapper 5 LE, INFI and amazingly light, every time I pick mine up I'm impressed. Isn't as thick or robust as the knives on your list, for sure.

 On the BATAC, CG or the thicker blade LE.

I'm not the biggest guy out there, the largest I would EDC, in town anyway, is a Meaner. Could look at the Scrofa as well.

This site may help with the BM's specs:

For folder replacement, I would look at Game Warden or Active Duty. Mean Street or Sus Scrofa if you want something on the large side. Any of those 4 would replace the knives in your picture, and have similar blade lengths to most popular folders. You could almost certainly pull out a Game Warden in most parking lots, and the other three would likely be OK in NH parking lots.

If you want to go bigger than that, Badger Attack (BATAC) or something from the SAR lineup would fit nicely, SAR4 or SAR5. I don't know why, but your post screams "SAR5" to me. Also nice stuff from Swamp Rat or Scrapyard that I'm less familiar with.

If you do decide to EDC an ASH or Sarsquatch, please post pics of everything on your belt! :D

A little About the CGFBM, FFBM, & the NMFBM...

CGFBM "Muddy Magnum":
Muddy_Magnum.jpg

The CG ("Combat Grade" FBM) is approximately .25" at the spine, but significantly thinner on the lower blade flat leading to the edge bevel. It has 'corrugated bevel technology' (CBT) which as the claim goes, lightens the weight of the knife without sacrificing blade strength. Great knife!

FFBM:

The FFBM ("Fat Fusion" or "Flat Fusion" Battle Mistress. AKA, Fat Flat Fusion Battle Mistress >FFFBM<) is an FBM with a thick sabre ground blade, this one is definitely a heavy, heavy duty version that's approximately .300" at the spine. Truly a weighty beast!

NMFBM ("Nuclear Meltdown" FBM (Limited Edition version shown):
NMFBM-27_1.jpg

NMFBM-27_4.jpg

This FBM is around .27" thick at the spine, and is 1.5" longer than the typical FBM's, and while it has a longer blade, its weight seems similar to the shorter bladed FFBM. Obviously it will seem more blade heavy, but it feels good in the hand and chops great! The Nuclear Meltdown treatment includes a 'ball-bearing' finish around the Talon & lanyard holes as well as a rounded spine, choil, guard & skull-crusher pommel)

(If anyone spots an error in the info above, please chime in!! ...I'm getting a little rusty with my FBM facts, no pun intended! :o:))

**For your next question, it would help us significantly if you could tell us exactly what you would expect your EDC fixed blade to handle. You've chosen some of the bigger mid-sized Busse blades, and while not that there's anything wrong with this, its just that we can help you better with more details of the tasks that you want it to do well at. :)

Hope this helps ya so far!

My usual EDC folder is 5 + inches, the pic with the gerbers was kind of a rarity. I generally carry a benchmade LFK, benchmade ruckus or cold steel XL voyager. 3 inches is small for me, I think the minimum would need to be 5. The SAR 5 is certainly possible.

Jaxx, out of those three which would you say is the best chopper?

Also as far as EDC... I hurt my knives something awful. Prying, stabbing, scraping, heavy cutting, hell... I've chopped down small trees with folders before when the need arises. I've yet to have a knife I hadn't broken, even my current knives are getting pretty beat.

I have to ask - what do you do for a living? Are the broken knives related to it or separate?

I'm a machinist in the aerospace field.

I've broken knives at work before though, mostly outside of work. I basically need a crowbar/axe with a razor edge.

Hence the point of the post, I don't know what I want. I'm not going to post a want to buy add that just says "want to buy busse knife", especially since I'm not ready to buy just yet.

My suggestion would be to figure out what you want and post a Wanted to buy thread in the exchange.

When a post says "combat grade ash1" how does it differ from a fat ash or skinny ash?

Combat ASH-1's are thick, I mean chunky (also referred to as 'fat')!! .32" thick at the spine, while ASH-1 LE's are .25" and Skinny ASH-1's are .187"

Well... I have never broken in an FFBM, but I'd say out of the 3 as far as weight is concerned the CGFBM really holds its own . If weight is no issue, then the NMFBM is it.

To put it another way, if told that I'd have to wear the knife for a week straight for hiking, camping, etc. I'd pick the CGFBM. It told that I could just use it in a base camp, and prying open doors would be included, LOL, then the FFBM (great for batoning also). If told that I'd need a serious amount of firewood from large diameter trees/logs and would have no axe, then the NMFBM would get the nod for use in camp.

For what you listed about an EDC knife, I'd check out the Tank Buster. Lots of options, and still available through Busse Combat, at least for a little while longer.

Tank Buster options include:
swedge/no swedge
serrations/no serrations
Skull crusher pommel or rounded pommel
choil/no choil
coated, double-cut (beadblasted), or satin finish blade
standard or magnum G-10, canvas, or paper micarta handles...
...etc.!!

You can pretty much customize your own version to suit you best. Busse Combat has never offered so many choices before on any model, so if you are looking for a rough use knife in the 6" blade range made the way you want it, that's what I'd suggest.

Personally I will go for NMSFNO, but ASH might suit your EDC purpose better.
