Hello everybody!
I have posted here once or twice, good crowd with good advice.
Since I was a kid I have wanted to make knives but have never been in the position to do so.
I have some equipment, belt grinder, wheel grinder, band saw, buffer, sharpener, drillpress and welding equipment.
The only training I have is high school metal shop and welding. I can make simple knives and such from scrap metal and have been doing so since I was a kid. ATM I have a large area to build a custom shop and the opportunity to buy all the basic equipment required. I work full time 7 days on 7 days off, my plan is to start this as a project for my off work days.
Im not really sure what to ask... im possibly on the edge of a life changing project and im a bit nervous but I can look at professional knives and say... jeez if I had the right equipment I know I could make a knife like that.
I would appreciate any words of wisdom or advice.
I have to put together a list of equipment that I will need.
It has to be a complete list but not to pricey.
Can you please help me with my list.
Ill write out what I think I need and if I miss anything could you please point it out too me.
-Heat treating furnace im thinking of a Paragon D-24 (is this good or is there another better option)
-I would like a good quality knife makers belt grinder but im not sure what to get (any suggestions)
-Protective clothes
-Quenching tub
Of course steel and other knife materials
Heres where im stuck.
What do I need for hand tools ??
Files, Hammers, sand paper and sanding block... not sure what else.
The advantage I have is I have time and room to make mistakes and teach myself and I dont have to rely on this as a source of income for now.
So please let me know what my list needs so I know what to stock a basic shop with.
Thank you for your time and advice !!
