Absolute best duct tape brand/type?

Does anyone have a particular brand/type/etc. of duct tape that they swear by? I work for a specialty/aerospace adhesives distrubutor, and I have access to pretty much every type of 3M or Scapa tape on the market. If it's expensive, I might even be able to request a "sample" :D
So... who uses what?
To me, duct tape is one of those items where quality is of extreme importance. You might even be able to get more use out of less tape if it's really good stuff! All I currently have is regular 3M 8979, which is less than ideal since it's designed to be removable. Ultimate flexibility and adhesive tenacity are the 2 most important characteristics I guess...

LOL, I was going to look at the TDS/FAQ for that...
Thanks!
And is this a sub-forum for CGN? I'm just waiting for pitdog and Misanthropist to chime in too. :):D

Gorilla Tape. It's thick enough that it's harder to tear than normal duct tape. If you pull it away from where it's stuck, you have to pull harder to get it loose.

The downside is, it's thicker than normal duct tape. So a given size compact roll will contain fewer feet of tape compared to regular duct tape.

I use the stuff with the Duck picture on it.

For what I use it for I don't need anything that will stick like concrete for 17 years :) If it requires tape for that long it probably requires a different type of fix.

Plus, I'm not about to spend $6 on a roll of duct tape.

Best thing is to look up old issues of Consumer Magazine and see if they have any issues that they tested Duct tape.

Just the standard od 100 mph tape from ranger joes for me.....

I have a few roles of 100mph tape...some are good, some aren't so good. I have been using Gorilla tape recently (wish they had it in OD green) and love it. I always carry a flat role (about 12-15 feet or so in the back pocket and it's about as handy as having a knife! Doesn't matter where you carry it; wrapped around a bottle, wrapped on a knife sheath/handle, etc...just have a little on you as it can save the day for a lot of small repairs and several other needs while you're outdoors:

- can be used as a bandaid
- repair shelter / clothing
- patch a water bladder or 2 quart canteen
- splint wrapping for a broken leg
- temporary blister covering
- ankle wrapping for support (sprained ankle)
- attaching items with broken straps (watch, pouches, etc.)

There's a 1001+ uses...

Gorilla tape, the stuff is just plain evil.

Don't let it get onto your skin :(

And yes it is pretty thick.

I appreciate and respect the phrase: "To each, his own." However, I'm sorry, but I really don't think THAT MUCH about what goes into my kit, let alone a particular brand of duct tape!!!:yawn::yawn:

Thanks for that, Cougar. I'll have to try that Gorilla tape. I've seen it, but always bought the cheaper stuff since I didn't think it was that much better.

I bought a few rolls of Extreme Cold Weather or something duct tape from Big Lots a while back that I have been happy with. It is a nice, thick, durable tape that holds up pretty well. Plus, it is blue! The color blue makes everything better. :)

Thanks for that link Cougar. That should save me from doing my own scientific comparison. I'll still post my results when I get my free samples from our suppliers though.. :)
The Motivator, it's just a philosophy I have about doing the most with the least. Always carry multipurpose items when possible. And would you want a temporary repair job to fail sooner or later? :p It's one of those items where the top-shelf stuff is still under $15/roll so why would you buy off-shore or even light-duty domestic tape?

Don't get the "Duck" brand duct tape, it is not very sticky and tears too easily.

I haven't found a brand I particularly like(as I usually grab a roll from the duct guys on jobs), I just know I don't like "Duck" tape.

ETA: Couger allen provided a link to proof that "Duck" brand sucks:barf:

I wonder what grade of "Duck Tape" it was... their website shows 4 grades. Maybe you ended up with the light-duty tape???
