Absolute best duct tape brand/type?

lol...there are definitely a few cgn guys around here...

I have a couple of rolls of that gorilla tape stuff. It's the strongest I have personally used. But I totally want to get my hands on Nuclear Duct Tape, that rules!

Motivator, once you use a few different types of duct tape, you will realize that there is a big difference between the good stuff and the cheap stuff! It's like fishing line, ammunition, fuel, or any other consumable...for that matter it's like any other tool. If you are not ever going to depend on it for anything then go ahead and get the cheap stuff. If you think you are going to NEED it, then you will probably want the higher quality gear. Do you work on your own vehicles? Often you meet guys who never do anything more than change the oil on their trucks...for that you can use a box wrench from walmart.

On the other hand, if you need to swap out an axle 50 km into the bush, you probably better have a wrench that won't strip on you!

And after all, this forum is about survival.

Lee Valley Tools " Gaffers Tape " , havent looked for it in a few years, expensive, think the best quality Duct tape on steroids ( thicker/stronger) , and when peeled off after a long stay didnt leave adhesive residue.

Need to get more now that I'm thinking of it.

I will have to disagree the Gorilla Tape that I have used sucked in cold weather, to thick and stiff and just peeled off.
I spoke to a dealer and said “Media Hype” the DUCK which is Trade marked not Duct which is Generic, was a just over all better. You just have to pick the type for the job.
I just checked one of my water bottles which is wrapped with the DUCK tape for two+ years and it is just as strong as when I applied it. {Clear with Threads in it}
Use the cheaper stuff for day to day and us the better for the field like you’re a** may depend on it.

3m nuclear grade duct tape.
No, really.

What he said....and Gaffers tape. Read below. 3M makes some crazy strong stuff.

Go here to check out 3Ms site with all different kinds of duct tapes and cloth tapes. ----> http://products3.3m.com/catalog/us/en001/auto_marine_aero/marine/node_NZWJ032T0Xbe/root_GST1T4S9TCgv/vroot_GS4JK4Y166ge/gvel_N4BX5SJJFCgl/theme_us_marine_3_0/command_AbcPageHandler/output_html

Think of ”gaffer’s tape” as the Cadillac of general purpose tapes — the king of half-assed repairs. (Duct tape is the “queen.”) “Gaff” tape — as the pros call it – is a cloth-backed tape often used in cinematic and theatrical productions. It outshines regular duct tape in both tensile and adhesion strength — without leaving as much nasty residue as duct tape.

Gaff tape is used by Gaffers to rig lights, wiring, and the like. Much like duct tape it has endless potential. But unlike duct tape, you can actually remove it later without the usual leftover goo. It’s easy to write on and even comes in various colors and sizes — though flat black is traditional for stage use due to its non-reflective nature.

The tensile fail point for gaff tape is usually around 45 psi, compared to around around 25 to 30 psi for duct tape. Its adhesion is superior, too, failing at about 55 ounces per one-inch strip. (Duct Tape fails at about 40 ounces per one inch strip.)

The only bad news is that the pro grade stuff isn’t cheap. A 2 ‘X 60 yard roll of 3M 6910 gaff tape goes for $27 on Amazon!. Other brands go for far less at around ten to fifteen bucks per roll. And the secret, of course, is to buy in bulk. Don’t worry — you’ll use it eventually.

Thanks again guys. I've got "samples" inbound from 3M and Scapa :D. I'm going to check into the miscellaneous gaffer tapes, but I think I may have found a winner right at work: Shurtape PC628 2" will run me about $11/roll with my employee discount. We stock it in blue and black. I had no idea it was such decent tape!

Misanthropist,
Many thanks for that lesson. I am always willing to listen to others' perspectives about survival. I think it was Socrates that said something to the effect of: "The first sign of genius is realizing that you don't know everything." Or something similar to that....I don't remember the full quote.

;)

Looks like I need some gaffers tape, I don't want to be caught with only the "queen" -AKA duct tape :D

Just by comparing the numbers, the 3m gaffers tape I looked at seems just about as strong as gorrila, but 1/2 as sticky. (makes sense since it's gaffers tape).

I'll see what I can do about getting a couple of rolls of 3M Nuclear-grade tape for us Vancouverites to play around with. Industry perks....
How can it not be good? It's freakin' NUCLEAR!

I like Gorilla Tape but theres a major drawback, one role is only around 35 yards as opposed to regular duck tape at around 60 yards. If you intend on carry a lot of tape in a small area then I don't know if Gorilla Tape will cut it.

I have a friend that tested several including Gorilla. Gorilla did the best in general applications, but did not work so well in heat or as a blister guard for the heel as did the standard high temp Duck brand. For around the house Gorilla appears is probably superior. For wilderness use, I prefer the higher temperature rated stuff, especially if is going to sit in a pack and the Sun for a long time.

SWEET!!!

That's interesting to hear about gorilla tape in the cold...I have to admit I've never used it in anything much outside of room temperature.

I have some gaffer's tape but I don't find it all that sticky. I always thought the main advantages of it were that a) it doesn't leave residue all over everything and b) it doesn't reflect light. I never thought of it as especially strong tape but maybe that's not the case.

Anyway I really want to get a look at NUCLEAR DUCT TAPE. That is SO BADASS.

I carry 2 inch wide Scotch 33+ electrical tape in addition to the Duck brand tape
I've been using, I use the 33+ when I want some extra stretch/flex
sounds like I need to look into some nuclear tape, maybe switch brands...

Sorry.. no nuclear-grade in the sample bins at 3M. It's technically regular 8979 tape with extra tolerance to a couple of nuclear plant chemicals. So unless you wanna go halfers on a case of 24..:D. It does come in badaxe red though. ;)

Another vote for Gorilla Tape.

Once I discovered this stuff I couldn't bring myself to get the 'normal' stuff anymore.

The rolls I made are a bit thick but I don't mind.

Guess I need to get out more. Didn't realize there were so many different kinds of duct tape. I usually get the 3 pack from Costco. Seems to be strong enough for anything I've ever used is for.
