Absolutely Disappointed With Benchmade.

With the expiration of the Axis Lock patents, we'll see that style lock pop up in legitimate knives. There's already one in the works from Millit Knives. This might lead to more available aftermarket springs and perhaps springs of different thickness or alloy. However it shakes out, it might be easier to self-maintain Axis Locks in the future.

That's an excellent point.

Let me start off by saying, I am an enthusiast when it comes to knives. I have educated myself through the knowledge of other people as well as with myself through the years of purchasing knifes. I can tell whether a knife is worth what it actually is and so on.

A couple years ago, I purchased my first "good" knife which was a spyderco Endura 4. I was looking for a quality knife that was priced decently and I was sold on the endura. had it for about 2 years of use and started to get more interested in knifes and found myself purchasing a Benchmade 940. why? because all the folks and YouTube and especially the forums RAVED about it saying hoe perfect it was and how some people would own them for 5 plus years without breakage. Little did I know it would be a nightmare.

Now, giving you the full story in detail would take forever, so I'll shorten it up. I received my 940 with lots of hope and was nothing but disappointed from that point and after. the blade grind came very un-even and the centering was piss poor. Especially for a $180 knife! so I sent it in to benchmades "legendary" warranty department and got it back with the blade still uncentered. I called them and the lady was very nice and sent me a shipping label. Once I got it back the centering was good... until about 3 months went by and a spring broke. There I was again filling out their warranty form and sending it back in. Later received the knife and was told the spring had gotten out of place. This is a premium priced knife??? Anyways, had it for a little while longer and what do ya know? the spring broke again. I called them up and kindly told them how absurd this is and told them to just send me a new knife as I was convinced I had a lemon. They kindly agreed to on a "courteous" fashion to do so. when I received 940 I though the problem was finally solved. around 6 months went by and yet ANOTHER SPRING BROKE! I called them yet again and asked them "am I doing something wrong here???" she asked me questions as to whether I was pulling the lock bar back with 2 hands and if I lived in a humid environment. She couldn't give me a straight answer as to why I kept breaking these damn things. I sent the knife back and then gave it away shortly after.

In between all that time I had purchased more benchmades such as the crooked river, valet, and the foray as well as more spyderco's such as the blue paramilitary 2, and the sprint run manix 2. all of the spyderco's came perfectly centered with a drop shut action and no blade play in any direction! and for a lot less money (except for the manix) Around Christmas time in 2017 I purchased another 940 because I truly do love the design and it came with WAY worse Q.C than the first one. There was a defect on the blade tang that made the action rough, the scales came scratched and the screws were stripped. Not to mention serious side to side play. It took benchmade twice to fix this knife and now we are at current day. Take a good guess... a spring literally just broke!

Now I take care of my knifes. I oil them and blow them with air to get all the pocket lint out. I also currently have my foray in service do to a broken omega spring. So clearly this can't be bad luck. I have given Benchmade many chances and they can't even keep a dang knife working properly. I have spent around $100 dollars in shipping already. How could they charge these premium prices for a knife of this quality and fit and finish? If I knew how to post pictures without exceeding my limit, I would show you all the warranty work I have received from them. I FIRMLY believe benchmade is not what they are known to be or at least not what they used to be. My old Endura still hasn't failed me and that thing has been through hell and back, with no blade play, good centering, and a heck of a lot cheaper? so whats the deal???

I hope benchmade reads this and at least does something about it. I'm not even asking for much. All I ask for is a centered blade, good grind and action, with no play whatsoever.

If you made it this far God bless hahaha. BTW all my knifes have been purchased from BladeHQ with great customer service!
This is par for Benchmade..ive moved on to good knives.

They have the worst qc in the industry.

BTW knifes should be spelled knives.

I have several axis lock knives. I have broken springs on every one of them but my oldest griptilian. I bought the griptilian when they first came out. I don't remember what year it was. I'm not a young anymore and my memory isn't as good! Seems like it was in 02 or 03. The main knife that broke the springs was my 940. My min onslaught only broke once and my mini grip broke once. That 940 broke three times. I sent it in the first two times, but after that I made my own springs with .24 gauge memory wire. My wife used to make jewelry and I got to looking at the wire she had on her work desk and it's about the same size. So I made my own. It's stronger and hasn't broke in 4 years or so. I do live on the Gulf Coast and it is VERY humid here. I spend alot of time outdoors too. This might affect it. BUt it hasn't broken that memory wire.

I don't think benchmade makes bad knives. Out of the 4 that I own, only the 940 has given me the most problems. My intent in this thread is not to bash on benchmade, but to maybe get their attention and address the problem. I may have sounded like I was hating on them. That may be mostly due to the fact that the knife had broke just then and was a little frustrated.

Certainly justified in your frustration. You have to take statements from people who speak in absolutes with reservations though, "the worst" QC in the industry is sensationalist at best.

They dont make bad knives. Just bad quality control on a majority of products in comparison to other knife makers charging the same money. Because the poor quality. Myself and many others put them last because of these many issues.

The only thing they did to try and fix the problem was to put a qc lot number on the box. So if they don't ask for that number and or no one knows to give them that number when calling for service it's null. Also if someone doesn't complain about the qc issue and just lives with it... Which happens alot of the time, it goes Un noticed and qc does not improve.

Antonio,

Your experience sounds frustrating to say the least. Sorry to hear about that. If you could PM me your info and who you sent the knife to here at Benchmade I can also take a look at the failure from a design/technical standpoint to get some idea of what may be going on. The omega springs shouldn't be failing that quickly.

As an owner of 13 benchmades ,and having sold the same amount ,plus.
Never ever had spring problems,if so just send it back and they will fix it .simple and shipped back free.
Now I've never heard so much shit talked on this forum in my life, as I have on this thread from start to finish.
Message to the OP take a redner please.and grow a set.to make such a original post is actually embarrassing.
Just saying like.if I was you ,
stay to spyderco .simple really.and stop wasting benchmades time.
As it seems you will never be happy unless they give you ten free knives.

Of course not Jimmy,I wish you'd stop being so nice haha.

This is one of the mains reasons i don't own a Benchmade. I don't live in the US so if a knife has a problem i can't just send it in for service..
I don't live in the US either ,with no problem,
So that blows you're statement out simple isn't it when you know facts from bullshit.

clearly yoy didn't read the fact that my crooked river and my valet have not had a spring break. So, contrary to what you believe I should do, I will stick with benchmade. I'm not going to turn away from a company when only one model has given me serious issues. I also do not believe I am embarrassing myself for posting my honest experiences with the 940's I have purchased.

Hey .
If one out of three knives I ever bought from a company were no good after all that aggrevation I would think twice about buying anymore,
Why did you buy a crooked river and valet after you're so called nightmare.
And if you bought them first ,why would ou slam benchmade after you're recent purchase ?
Whatever fella I believe thousand wouldn't.
Like I say stay to spyderco, and keep away from bad old benchmade simple really.

.
