Absolutely handiest item on a trip.

My only true EDC light for the longest time that I've owned any flashlight... always chained to the keys.

Photon MicroLight II

I use. Flashlight on most days but it isn't handy enough to carry in the pocket. My phone works in a pinch. I live in the country and do like to have one in my day bag and at home.

I use my little 4Sevens Mini MLR2 (1x CR2 battery) or 1st gen Fenix PD20 several times a day. They're the two I've been EDCing for the last year or so. I was EDCing the PD20 since I bought it but replaced it with a LumaPower Incendio v3 but that started acting up a couple months ago by either not turning on or cycling through its outputs. I'm still trying to decide what replacement single CR/RCR123 EDC light I should get to replace the PD20.

An edc flashlight is more valuable to me then a knife. I prefer a little more throw then the small fenix so I have a spendy AA clipped to my pocket. It's nice to know if those eyes in the woods belong to a bear or a deer. ;)

My mini x 123 is my most used edc item. Comes in so handy on an airplane, in the hotel room etc. It's the size of my thumb so there really isn't a reason not to carry it.

Have had a Fenix L0D on my keychain for years, and before that was a E01 or E10 or some 1xAAA thing. Awesome form factor to always have on you.

A brand new Fenix E01 (olive green) came in the mail yesterday--it is superb! Thanks for the discussion; this great little light is a new pocket companion with my EDC (currently a Western States medium stockman, '50s era).

I keep one dynamo crank type in the glove box and a couple at home. The wife knows were they are so they can be found in the dark. They stay in their spots until needed.

I love my Fenix EO1 and my Leatherman PS which is TSA OK! Flashlights are very handy in strange places.

Anyone considering an E01 I would encourage to consider an E11 instead... only a little more expensive and larger (AA vs AAA) and WAY brighter on high... a little brighter on low... probably one of the best gear purchases I've made as I use it more than anything else regularly found on me (save for a money clip)

Fully agreed. It's an easy item to overlook, and certainly one of the most practical EDC items you can carry. I roll with a Fenix LD15, a Streamlight Pro-Tac, and/or a Mag Lite XL200 just about everywhere I go.

+1, I upgraded from the E01 to the LD01 recently and am glad I did.

While my photon 2 is always on my key ring, my key ring is not always on my person. I'll have to check these out, thanks. I also like the Streamlight micro streams, but it looks like the Fenix is capable of standing upright and being a mini candle as well, which can come in really handy at times.

I'm starting to really see the value of a flashlight that uses a "regular" battery, AA or AAA. Good stuff!

I just saw the new Mag 2AA flashlight, 245 lumens at $27.

BX has photons in various colors.

Those energizer pen lights are way to weak, I've got a little pill light that's just as bright and is tiny.

Handiest item on a trip is probably my Garmin GPS, last trip involved my youngest daughter getting sick from a bad box of juice and spraying the back of my seat with eggs, juice and whatever else she had for breakfast.

In an area I didn't know I found a car wash to spray down her clothes, the mat in front if her seat etc. A Walmart to grab some cheap clothes and all without having to find someone to explain how easy it is to make 3 rights, 2 lefts and go 3/4 a mile before turning around three times, hopping on my left leg and having a store magically appear after I pass it.

I like GPS.

 I think there's a lot of wisdom in going with commonly available batteries. And the new LED tech has come so far that you can get a seriously bright light with a AA or two.

The new Mag LEDs are pretty kick-ass for the coin, esp. the XLs.

Costco is selling a 2 pack of 500 lumen Duracell flashlights for $25. In the past the quality of Costco's flashlights were sketchy, but these seem to be pretty good, and bright. They take two C batteries, IIRC. Too big for pocket carry, but great for the car and things that go bump in the night.

Sorry for the hijack, back to you, jackknife.

I have to admit that the AA and AAA have completely taken over my flashlights. All other flashlights have fallen by the wayside, and I made a conscious decision to standardize my stuff. Everything I use that takes batteries, flashlights, emergency radios, heart/blood pressure monitor, all take the AA/AAA batteries.

With the advances that they have made in LED technology, the Big D cell and even the C cell lights don't seem to be as efficient in combining portable size, run time, and power. I think some of the young guys are spoiled by the new flashlights. I remember the old D cell flashlights from when I was a kid, and how you got a mild yellow spot of light for about an hour or two before it gave out. Even the little Fenix E01 puts the 1940's and 50's flashlights to shame. Now a 2 AA minimag LED seems like a light saber next to what I grew up with.

Carl, I cant agree more with you in regards to a flashlight being my most used EDC item. I've carried and continue to carry a Maratac AAA and for all the reasons you've mentioned. At 51 yrs of age my eyesight during the day is strained for the items that lurk in dark places. The guys that work for me ALWAYS seek me out either for my flashlight or knife.

I have a handyman business and depending on the job or day a knife is an essential tool but the little flashlight reigns supreme for most frequently used item.
