absolutely unofficial survey re: THE BOOK

I like the layout of #1 the best. But I think it would look even better w/ the khukuri in #6/8.

John - #1 is a great cover (and my preferred choice) but the shadow over the letters bothers me. I'd like to be able to read that title clearly. As it is, though, it is very authoritative looking - if that's your intention. It also evokes some of the TimeLife series. Either way, it makes me very interested to see what's going on inside.

Each chapter's title page's title-text
would benefit by having the same size font
as every other chapter
& more white space around it (below it).

Maybe set apart the title text more
by using a line (linear symbols/graphics/pictures are often used)
or shadow,
or a different color.

A separate option (& my preference);
Moving the title page to an odd page number
(maybe preceeded by a blank page)
and have the page contain only a title and appropriate picture.

I think i'm going to have to go with #1. Once again, it just looks like a more official or professional cover for your book, not a haphazard throw-together picture book. I too will be looking forward to it's release:) Great pics, JP.

JP,

They are all nice....but I keep going back to # 1 & 2. For some reason, I like the kukri going from handle on the left to blade on the right. The spine of the book is solid (handle) and the blade to pointing towards the contents of the book ....or maybe it's because we read left to right.....at least most of us do?

Just my opinion but I too would be interested in a signed copy.

Best of luck,
Steve

#1 is classy. Belongs in museum gift shops. I'll buy a couple of copies with any cover -- the autographed 1st edition for the coffee table, and the dog-eared, well worn daily reference version with all the margin notes. Beautiful work!

Don't have a coffee table, but my favorite is #1. If you're going to change it, try putting the knife from #5 on it. That knife has the what I consider the classic khukuri shape (historians may disagree).

John,
Number 1 has drama, elegance and gravitas.
Whichever you choose, make sure there's one left for me.

They are all great, number 1 has my vote. The anticipation around this book is so great am sure the Cantina customers would all buy a copy if it was wrapped in newspaper! Good luck with your latest endeavors John. Rod

For Myself JP, I prefer the formats of 1 & 2, using kuks from 2 or 5.

3 has something as well. To my eye, The colour & format I guess.

In order of preference 5 ,9 , 7 , 8.
In 1 i feel the outline of the khukri gets lost in the dark background. The pages look fab.
would love to buy a signed copy :D .
Yaj.

#1 first choice, #2 second choice. maybe do it as the backside cover ?

anyway, i cant say why, but the first one just appeals most to me.

Thanks for all your responses and comments. The layouts shown were set by hand so the type is VERY rough as are most details. There is a massive amount of work to be detailed out still and this presentation does not mean a book is guaranteed.

I have to consider which knife will become the cover girl since I no longer am leaning towards the watered blade and ivory grip and feel simplicity/clarity is key in layout. If any of you are like me the cover could the old paper bag mentioned but as long as I saw the words KUKRI or GURKHA on it, I'd buy it.

Mr Bad X: the kukri you asked about is one I've discussed before and I consider absolutely perfect. The only catch is that it was made in England, not Nepal and presented back to either a business group or the Raja of Sirmoor. There is no recorded connection to the 2nd GR that was formed in Nahan, Sirmoor in 1815 beyond what was probably financial. It is believed to have been made by John Rood and 3 of these were made and one other supposedly is still around.
