Accidental opening.

i got bitten two time. one was a poke and one was an anatomy lesson.
The first one was due to this little inexpensive "Jeep" branded liner lock Kershaw my wife bought me...Jeeze, 17 or 18 years ago. It had a really weak detent. It was riding in my fifth pocket and when i reached in y main pocket, it had opened enough to bite my finger as i pulled out my hand.

The other one is a lesson in using the lock on an automatic if it comes with it. I had a Benchmade Adamas come open in my pocket. I reached in to get the shopping list out of it and had one of those cuts that was immediate pain, followed by "Oh $hi7" and clamping it shut and finding the fastest way to the ER before you stain you truck seats. My freshly polished to hair popping sharp Cruwear edge bit my pinky tip to the bone. 6 stitches and $1000 later...yeah, use the safety. Those axis lock autos are almost hair triggers.

The nice thing was that I had a great nurse stitch me back together. This was during the pandemic, and she was excited to sew me. She said that after the last year of just being and feeling helpless, having someone come in that they could actually help felt good. She did a good job. barely a scar with minimal nerve damage ;)

There was someone here who carried a tip up knife in their back pocket, sat down and somehow stabbed their self in the butt. I posted a pic years ago, but mods removed it due to the graphic nature.

I can totally see that happening. No knives go in my back pocket, even a fixie in kydex.

I tangled my key in the jester's Spidehole once and it opened. But I also put it back into my pocket once without closing it (excited because I got a new knife).

Twice.
Same knife.
My fault.

The wave mod on my Para 2 REALLY wants to open the blade. Even if you just pull the knife out a little. Both times I poked myself while trying to get the knife out without using the wave. Now I know to pinch the tip so it can’t open before trying to do this. No problem now. 👍

I had a ZT 0801 clipped in a cargo pocket that opened while I was changing clothes…I think I tossed the trousers onto my bed or something. It put a hole in the pocket lining but I wasn’t cut or anything.

I think I probably had an assisted Kirshaw or SOG open once also, but it was tip up at the back of my pocket, so it didn’t do much.

An Emerson wave got me. it must have opened slightly when I put it in my pocket. That one needed stitches.

This is my only example too. Between the Emerson wave ripping up my jean edges and opening in a pocket carry, I have abandoned the Emerson wave. I should also add that carrying knives in the cargo pocket on my right-hand side has helped too. Plenty of room in a cargo pocket to get a good grip vs a regular front pocket. Because I cargo pocket carry most of the time, no need to worry about pocket clips too.

I have had cheap stiletto style switchblades open in my pocket because the lock wouldn't stay engaged. I had an all SS leek open in my pocket one time as well. I can't really remember the specifics of how it happened, but I managed to put pressure on the flipper tab somehow. First thing I did when I got the knife was take the safety off the bottom because it kept getting engaged by accident and when I tried to open the knife it wouldn't open. Can't say I blame the knife for that one ;)
I have had tip up thumb stud knives where the stud hung on my pocket coming out and accidentally waved open when I didn't expect it. Got a nice cut from a Benchmade 531 like that one day at work.
I will add that when a spring assist knife springs open in your pocket, it is a rather precarious situation. The knife and point manage to wedge in your pocket, and if there is spring tension trying to open it it can be difficult to get it closed or out of your pocket without cutting yourself, especially if you have keys and other stuff in there 😬

I don't remember ever having had a knife open in my pocket. But I carry modern knives in my right rear pocket with nothing else in the pocket.

I dont feel comfortable carryng an OTF automatic because I feel like it could deploy unintentionally, so I dont own any of those.

Other than that, it seems like an unlikely thing to happen.

IMO, some of the newer locks (axis, cross bar, shark, etc.) open too easily. They don't strongly hold the blade closed. Some people consider this a feature (fidget friendly, flick open, drop shut, etc.), but I consider it a safety hazard. If you drop or shake one of these knives, it will partially open and stay partially opened.

This is why I prefer a back lock. They close strong and hold the blade closed tightly.

Just my 2 cents.

ever had a knife open in your pocket?

People have that happen until they discover that the spine of the blade goes in the corner of the pocket next to the seam .
That cuts down on a whole bunch of drip drip .

I am always shocked that every single tip down blade comes from the factory spine out in the middle of the pocket . Easier to deploy I suppose .
Tip down is magic . . . tip up beware .
