BTW, the following Perl script is an example random number generator:

srand;
$winner = int(rand 999) + 1;
print STDOUT "$winner\n";

The "int(rand 999)" part generates a random number between 0 and 998, and the "+1" increments it into your specified 1 through 999 range.
