Adios from Primos Knives

Terry,

I know this is a decision that wasn't easily made and I sincerely hope that you remain active in the knife world. You are one of my early mentors and I would hate to see your talent lost.

Brett

Terry
You are Talented enough..don't let economic realities diminish your gifts and achievements.
I (and countless others)have the utmost respect for you as a maker and person
good luck
Riad

The truth of the matter is that I just wasn't good enough or fast enough. I've watched guys come up in the last three years that can work circles around me and are now doing better work than me.

I think you are being WAY too hard on yourself. Don't be so sure those other guys are doing any better work or making any more money... in reality things ain't always as rosey as they ook through the distorted glass of the internet.

When you're making knives as a business you have to make business decisions. I know that as a fulltime knife maker trying to make living in this business for about the last 2 1/2 years I can sympathize with everything in your post. I bet most every other Maker reading it will feel the same way.

In the end ya gotta do what ya gotta do to make a living.

I hope you will find a solution to your current difficulties and perhaps find a way to fit knifemaking into whatever twists and turns the future holds. Just don't beat yourself over the head with things and remember, This too shall pass!

I'm really sorry to hear this, Terry. Don't give up on doing it spare time and putting the enjoyment back in it for you.

Terry,
I have never met you but I hope that life treats you good and you move to a place in your life that will bring you happiness.

Hey Terry, Dogmans right....let it rest for a while.....hell do some fishin or huntin......then when you dont Have to make them to fill orders and pay bills...its more fun.......try it part time and see.....

All the best

Bj

Terry - I'm truly sorry to read this. You are a good person and a great maker, you'll be missed. Best of luck going forward!

Terry,
As a past customer, an admirer, and a friend I am saddened to hear that you have had this difficult decision to make.

No matter where this decision leads you, however, I want you to know that you've left a wonderful mark on the custom knife community. Your skill, your knowledge, your contributions to online discussion forums and your kind, generous and helpful manner are an example that any knifemaker should strive towards. The knives you've made for me and all aspects of the transactions, from the initial discussions to the final delivery, have been among the biggest highlights of my time as a collector. I'll never forget the emails you sent me describing your trials and tribulations with that huge fighter you made for me. It really showed me how much of a perfectionist you are. How many blades did you forge before you were happy with one? Three? Four? It demonstrated that where another maker might've said "good enough," you kept pushing until it was just right. You showed that same level of dedication with all of your knives, and you high standards for quality are the truest signs of a great knifemaker. And while yours may not have be the most efficient or profitable, your path was honest and true.

It's why I own several of your knives.

I hope to meet you in person some day and thank you. For everything. Because you've not only made me happy as a collector, you've also helped inspire me to try my hand at knifemaking. I've passed my JS performance test and have always planned to include a montero-inspired hunter among my five submissions when I test for my JS stamp some day.

You've definitely left your mark, Terry. The custom knife community is blessed to have you in it.

Terry,

You're one of my favorite knifemakers...ever. Your work has been very inspiring to me as a new guy, and your tutorials taught me alot. I can only hope to be as great a knifemaker as you.

Take care friend, and good luck.

Hey, I'm not giving up hope that Terry will continue to put out some knives. It might take a month or two; maybe a year or two, but I just KNOW that Terry will get the bug again. A knifemaker with this much talent cannot give it up.

I am so sorry to hear this news, but I'm sure you will be great at whatever you do with your life. Knifemakers are all behind you! One of my first knives I made was made through the inspiration of your work, just know that, sir.

Although I understand your decision, It's a black day when we lose someone of your caliber. Best of luck in all your endeavors.

Terry,

Not much left to say that others haven't already. All I can add is that I want to thank you for your generosity and kindness, both in terms of all the great information you put out on your website and tutorials, and with all the personal questions you answered for me by email.

Best,

John Frankl

Terry,

As a proud owner of two of your knives (through the generosity of my departed dad) I'm sorry to hear you are retiring. I was hoping to get a couple more blades from you over the years. You are truely top notch in my book and my father had nothing but good things to say about you.

Like others have said, give it a rest, and come back to it as a hobby for the joy of it... You are too talented to leave it behind.

Good luck to you and your family. I'll still be on the lookout for your knives :)

Alan

Terry,

I think you run circles around plenty of knifemakers, and the knife you made me really confirmed that. You are a great guy who makes great knives and will be missed.

Take care,

Jeff

Like everyone here says, you've got talent and skill...be a shame to have it fade away.

I hope you continue to make knives...even if it is in your spare time.
Not only that I haven't got one of your knives yet!!

Seriously...Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.

Hi Terry, everyone here has said alot of what I was thinking after reading your "Good Bye". Kevin Wilkins captured my feeling best . Especially the part about being way to hard on yourself. You have influenced so many makers (me included) thru your tutorials & posts and for that "I Thank You" . I sincerely wish you & your family All the Best . I too hope, like so many others, that you can somehow find your way back. Like Danbo said, I maker with your Talent ?? Anyway , good luck Friend . I'm not saying "good bye" I'll say " I'll be seein ya again sometime soon " All the Best

Terry,

What you leave behind is the knifemaking.
You will always have friends and respect as well as the admiration of many collectors and the makers you helped and influenced so you will always be a part of knifemaking and it's community. Best to you and yours on your journeys.

Sorry to hear that you are throwing in the towel, perhaps a rest will do you good. I thank you for your input to the knife building world. If I were a betting man, I would put my money down that you will not ever quit building knives. It's in the blood!! Regards Ron Reeves
