Admiral Steel shipping?

I was going to order some 1080 from Admiral Steel tonight, but I balked at the shipping. The steel is only $14 for a 60" bar, but then the shipping is about $9 per piece.

That seems a little high to me. Is there a less expensive source out there? I know Admiral is well regarded, but almost doubling the price with the shipping seems a little rough to me.

You better get used to it. The price of oil affects nearly everything in the world. Shipping on anything from anywhere is up. Prices in stores are up due to increased cost of shipping, and increased production costs for manufacturors. All due to higher oil prices. Government regulations prevent us from using oil we have, or oil that is yet untapped. We have built no new refineries in over twenty years, because of over regulation and the costs, and hassles to overcome draconian government restrictions, both federal, and local. The bunny, and tree-huggers are behind much of this situation because they cry the loudest. If we don't make changes soon, it is going to get much worse. For now, you just have pay up, or do without. You have to pass on the increased costs to your customers. You have little choice.

The way to save on shipping is to order more steel at a time. It often costs the same for one bar of steel as it does for ten.

Exactly. They typically ship in those long, long cardboard tubes. So the cost of shipping really is around ten bucks- it's not as though Admiral is adding big bucks on top for "handling" or something.

So yeah, order three bars, and shipping is only $3 each ;D

Still $23 for enough to make say 6 to 8 fair sized knives, depending on construction, is not a bad price.

For an idea I got 6 50" bars of 1 1/2"x3/8" 1095 from Aldo for 144 bucks delivered. I have made other similar purchases here. (I am sure the delivery men hate me) I woulda like to see him when he "dropped off" my big anvil.

Shipping is up everywhere, I noticed that Kelly now requires a $100 order for free shipping on his steel. If you look at bladesteel pdf from Admiral, you can calculate your shipping from the chart at the bottom.

That's what I was expecting. Just to see what happened, I tried adding bars. They wanted $45 to ship five bars, though. It basically worked out that each piece I added was an additional $9, no matter what.

After that I checked flatground.com just to see what they charged. They were asking $9 to ship four 36" pieces of the same size stock.

I'll have to see about ordering some 1084 instead. I'm sure I won't notice the difference. :)

i always get 3 foot bars or sheets no longer then 3 feet as when you get into 6-9 foot you start looking at over size package charges

really you just end up cutting the 9 footer down anyhow so why not work with the shorter lenght

and yes i too am not looking forward to my next steel order as i know the cost of everything is rising

Probably some minimum order thing figured into the automated online ordering. If you want to order from Admiral, call and ask for Terry Summers. But the 1084 from Mace and Aldo is much better steel than 1080.

Aldo told me a while back all the 1084 was gone, but maybe they located more.

He has 1080 and 1084 in different sizes. I just ordered 100ft last week and it showed up already. He's great to deal with.

I checked the PDF price list, and their online store isn't charging correctly. When I order from them I'll be sure to call. Thanks for the tip, guys.

Mace has an e-mail. :)

Bill, Aldo has the 1"x1/4" 1084 but is out of the 1-1/2".

Kelly is also a great source of steel

Here's my 1 and only experiance with Admiral Steel, :grumpy:
I ordered a 36" stick of 3/16 x 2"-1095 and a 18" stick of 1/8 x 1 1/2-O1
well about a week and a half went by and I got a 6 foot tall tube delivered to my door. GREAT it was here! I thought, read the invoice and they shipped me a 72" stick of 1/8 x 1" S30V :eek::eek: so being the honest fella I am, I called them and they argued with me that they shipped me my order correctly! asked them to please read the addresses they found their mistake :foot: and it was another month and half before I got my correct order of steel and another 2 - calls, but still no return tube/label to send the S30v back, at there expense not mine. so now it's approcimatly 5 months since I got this huge stick, I would love to make some folders out of it, but I never stole anything in my life and i dont intend to start now, What do you guys think

Didnt mean to hijack the thread JoshEarl...:o

Yikes. I have ordered from them one time, and the shipping was a little on the slow side, but the product was as ordered.

I don't know that using the steel would be stealing at this point. You certainly have gone the extra mile to be honest, and it sounds like it's not worth the trouble for them to get their item back.

Josh

You see guys, that never happens with me. I got 1095, you get 1095. And just to let you know, we do still have 1084 in 1/4" x 1" in 3 foot bars. It's a good size for a lot of knives.

Hey Aldo don't sell out of ALL of that 1084 before I can scratch together more money!

One of my students just stuck his FIRST forge weld last monday night with some of that 1095! (then he beat the snot out of the weld forging it into a viking axe head, and the weld is holding beautifully)
Stuff welds like glue!

-Love it!

Hey Guy's, I ordered from Admiril two weeks ago. They charged me $37.00 shipping for 6' ats-34 and 3' 440c. All came in one tube. I agree that the shipping is high even with current fuel prices. thx, chad

Kelly Cupples is the best. I ordered some steel from him and it arrived at my house in three days. I was impressed.
If he has what you need, go with Kelly.
You may have to order a hundred bucks worth to get free shipping but his prices are the best.
None of the others offer free shipping no matter what.
