Admiral Steel

Mr Hanson, do you know a supplier who carries 1086m? I was thinking Howard Clark used that stuff, along with L6, for his swords. Would be nice to try a bit of it.

I'm curious. Why would someone choose 1086 when 1084 is easier to find? Specs are virtually identical except for the higher manganese in 1084. I suppose 1086 would give you a better hamon if that is what you were going for. Then again, if the "m" in 1086m indicates higher manganese content it seems like a wash.

1086 isn't the same as 1086M.

1086m has enough V and Cr to qualify as W2.......

Not the same as 1084 at all.

I've purchased most of my steel from Admiral Steel without problems. I use air hardening stainless steels though, so they have been my source for the Crucible CPM steels. I like the fact that they sell bars in 6 foot lengths at very reasonable prices. I admit that I haven't checked their prices in several months though.

Yes it is. I don't understand their logic. They are less expensive if you buy full sheet but more expensive if you buy strip.

This is why I always shop around. I Don't know the exact size referenced here, but I think Admiral is probably cheaper than either of them. That I why I was so surprised at Admiral's 52100 prices.

I bought from Admiral for over 20 years and defended them agains the negative comments here on BF. However, several months ago there was a problem with an order and when I called their sales desk I was subjected to rudeness rather than help. I have been buying from NJ and will never go back to Admiral.

Knife making steel is a very small part of Admiral. Terry Summers is the knife steel guy there and is who I spoke with when ordering years ago. He also Buys custom knives and is always at the Blade show & other shows. I was told never to call their regular customer service line with a knife steel question or issue.

I'm not defend Admiral, haven't bought from them in years. Just saying what I know.
