Admit it... how bad have you cut yourself ?

Up until recently, I had never cut myself seriously with a knife, but this Christmas I had received a couple of new knives, among them was a Buck 110 Slim Pro with an extremely stiff action, heavy lock spring, and a razor's edge...
I was working the blade trying to break it in while I helped my brother to setup a new electronic device I had got him as a gift, and that brief lapse in concentration resulted in my accidentally allowing the blade to slip free from between my fingers and snap closed on the middle finger on my other hand.

It left a pretty deep cut, deep enough to need stitches, but no way was I going to the ER on Christmas, so we butterflied the wound together, bandaged it up, and enjoyed the rest of the holiday with my family. It's healed up pretty well by now, but it's going to leave behind a deep scar.

I consider the words of Qui Gon when handling power tools and sharp, pointy objects.

Once in a while I crease the flesh, on rare occasions I crease it enough to cut, and once every decade or so I cut myself enough to make me wonder if I might need a couple stitches (I don't).

One of worst cuts I ever got was using a folder. You have to be careful with Tonka toys. One careless moment and you get part of your hand snagged in a backhoe...

My worst was when I was sharpening my black talon 2 and I went to go grab something to cut with it and I dropped it and without thinking which was a bad decision with the fact that I've always been taught to never catch a falling knife I reached down cut the tip of my thumb off (I at least caught it) but the next day I had a basketball game which made things worse.

Had a manicure knife fall out of the case as I was going down the stairs. I was around 10 at the time. It landed vertically on the handle as I stepped on it. I sat down on the steps and screamed bloody murder as I stared at 3" of the knife sticking out of the top of my foot.

Solo packing on the north country trail in northern Wisconsin. Stopped for the day and had camp all set up so I needed a fire to warm and cook. Started cranking out some feather stick and lost my grip on the stick and KaBar simultaneously. Edge of the knife went to the base of my right thumb and cut all the way to the bone. Missed the tendon by mm's but was an absolute gusher. Miles from anywhere, solo. Glad I had a decent trauma kit and at least 1 bar of cell signal. Quick clot sponge and several very rough sutures later. Stayed up the entire night with it elevated over my head waiting on help

As above ^ backpacking, but not as good a story. Was a teen and several days out. Needed to cut something with my SAK, used too much force, sliced through my jeans just above my kneecap. Patched myself together as best I could to hike out. Still carry the 4" scar.

Not too bad actually. I've had a few tip nicks when closing an unfamiliar knife or just not paying attention. I've had a couple of thumb-nail hacks and one cuticle cut when applying my usual "drop to tab contact" method on a new knife or not paying attention. I've gotten bitten sliding a finger past a tip or heel that gets too close to the scale on a closed knife. My worst cut was from a Leek that had partially slid out without engaging the assist, allowing the tip to catch and open out into my flesh. o_O

"Not paying attention" was operative in most of those. My worst cuts in life by far have all been from glass. Broken glass can be insidious. The absolute worst glass cut involved a severed tendon. I've also needed surgical intervention on two separate occasions to remove embedded shards that I couldn't retrieve on my own. Seriously, be careful with glass!

I've never cut myself and then gotten stitches. Should I have? Some will debate that. I don't know that I'm more careful than the average bear, I'm certainly less dexterous, so maybe that's why? I know I'm going to hurt myself if I'm not watching because that's my default situation. More than one folder has closed down on a finger. If anything I seem to be pretty good at spreading the damage around if my knuckle scars are any indication.
