Oh, boy, I'd love to have the fur that they are shedding....I'd spin in into yarn and knit to my heart's content....

What made this an unusual and interesting sight, was that there was the BIGGEST grizzly I had seen. It was right uphill and close to the buffalo...

This one was big and healthy looking....

Love the sign forest and old machinery. I'll leave a sign there one day.

Looking forward to your next pictures.

Thanks. You know, I've put three or four signs there over the last 20 years and couldn't find any of them.

Make sure you put one there that is BIG enough, and mark the spot down so you can find it....the sign post forest keeps growing and what looked familiar at one time, gets unfamiliarly burried amongst new posts and signs.

OK, I think it's too much to try to catch up with the road part of this trip.

We are on board S/V ORCA, getting her ready for her looong trip to Alaska.

Night before last, we sailed to Paradise Cove, Tiburon and anchored there for the night. It was lovely. While here we've met Matt, a nice young man with his own boat. He sailed to there and anchored near us. Johann, our 6'6" Gentle Giant crew member took the Avon and ored himself to visit Matt's boat "White Dove". Later Matt came over to our boat on his dinghy and we had a midnight dinner together.

I had the first watch from 20:00-24:00. Johann's watch from 00:00-04:00 and Kalevala's watch was from 04:00-08:00 then I was on watch till we left.

Matt came over at 08:00 and Kalevala made a nice omelet for breakfast.

We lifted anchor at noon and headed to our Pelican Harbour where ORCA has lived untill we leave here next week.

The wind was blowing like dickens when we got to the harbour. It was cross-wind. Everything was OK untill we had just cleared our berth and Kalevala put ORCA on reverse to back into our berth and something happened and grabbed the tiller, killer the engine and we were adrift with no power in heavy cross winds that was pushin. And beating us against the piers. It all happened so fast. Johann threw a bow-line to someone who had came to help us and was standing on the dock. The line didn't reach. Kalevala was holding onto the pier with all his might and tried to keep ORCA, (weight 18,000pounds) from getting too beat-up.

We got out of the harbour, dead and drifting on the water, in a middle of traffic lane. The men got the anchor set and secured. This all was done "textbook"...

A power boat was barreling toward us, but changed it's course seeing us immobile.

We got power back and motored to a different part of our harbour...to an inside berth that was easy to access. The harbour master was there to take the bowline and helped us into a berth. Our friend Ron will dive down today and take a look at the rudder and prop to see what had snagged the rudder. We have an idea of it and I'll post more later.

Gotta run now.

Hi, I'm back. It's been a long w-eek.

We had no lines in the water. The prop had touched the rudder and went to a "full lock" as you say. It had bent two of the prop's blades and caused a crack where the blade meets the hub.

I took the prop to Alameda to a prop shop and had it straightened up and the crack fixed. They also took away an inch of pitch to increase the rpms to where they should be.

I hung around Alameda and Oakland till 15:30 to get the prop back. I also went to a place called WayPoint and picked 15 new nautical chats that were printed for us that day. The charts go all the way to Canadian border.

Visited Silvia and Sal of "Sal's Inflatables". I met them last year when we bought an offshore liferaft from them. We liked eachother when we met and I made sure to visit them this year.

OUCH...yesterday I got my foot caught on a protruding screw on a finger of the dock and fell hard on my face. I bled a lot and fast. I don't know if I broke my nose. It's swollen, painful and crooked. Got a deep cut about an inch long and quarter inch wide on the bridge of my nose, black eye and dent on the forehead.

The right knee also hit the deck hard and it's swollen to almost twice the size of the left one...

Well, the boat got her blood, hopefully won't get more than that...

The fetch is all the way from the west side of Pacific ocean to the east side, which is USA west coast. There is nothing to stop the wind so it blows hard and makes big swells on the ocean..

I told my husband Kalevala that being on this SF Bay is like being in the womb. Going under the Golden Gate bridge and past the bar into the ocean will be like being born into a vast, unknown world that is full of potential danger, yet beautiful to experience.

I see you're on line and wanted to say, I've enjoyed the posts about your travels and thanks for sharing them with us.  :)

More ouch....You've not heard what happened yesterday afternoon.

I was sitting on salon sofa when the heavy folding mahogany table which is hooked to the wall, fell first on my ankle. The secont time it got unhooked it fell on my left shoulder and collarbone.

Damn, my nose is cut and tweaked, forehead bumped and scabbing, right knee swollen to almost twice the size of the other, left shoulder and collarbone hurting....I'm gonna have to get moving just so this battering of my body will end....

Thank you. I'm posting from my iPhone. Computer not working right now. I wish it was, so I could post pictures for you.

We were supposed to leave at 05:00 to go under the Golden Gate bridge and head to the sea.

One crew member has some more things to do to secure his own boat before he leaves with us.

WE WILL LEAVE THIS MORNING but might not make it to Bodega Bay today anymore.

No more dress rehersals, this is the real thing. My mind and heart are mingled with exitement, a bit of fear of the unknown and an attitude that I'll take and handle what ever comes up.

.

Will keep you posted as I can.

You know, I don't remember if I had told you that I've only sailed a half-a-dozen times and only on the SF bay. This is all new and a great adventure. The distance is about 3600 nautical miles and we'll be going through some of the world's most dangerous coastal waters.

Our boat is a wooden boat. She's a classic 1959 Herreshoff ketch. Length overall is 38 feet. On deck she is 34 feet. She draws 5.6 feet and her main mast is 45 feet. She weighs 16.000 lbs when empty.

We have all possible electronics but NO autopilot. She's got a brand new Beta engine with about 30 hours on it. She has a tiller instead of a wheel.

We have three crew members in addition to my husband and myself.

That's about all I know right now.

Will let you know when we have actually started under way...

Love to you who cares. -Spinner :):D

Have a safe trip. :)
