Thanks for taking the time to share your trip. The pictures are incredible.
Even though it has been over 5 years since I was in Alaska, seeing the pictures made me feel like I had just left...

I noticed you mentioned you are coming to Bend, Oregon.
I'll keep an eye out for your pickup. Shouldn't be hard to spot with Alaska plates.

Do you have friends or family here ?

I just wanted to chime in again. I am continuing to enjoy your thread. Lots of great pictures and thoughtful commentary. You should turn your journey into a book! You have a very nice way of describing everything.

Thanks for the nice comment and thanks for your phone number. Unfortunately our schedules didn't match this time.
I'll give you a call when I retrieve my truck from California and drive back to Alaska. Maybe we can go eat at one of those great places then...
:D

Few miles down the road I spitted these two. They were on the side of the old hwy and I got off the road to see if I could get a few pictures of them....

This was the only one as they high-tailed out into the woods....

Little by little the landscape started to change subtly....

More birch trees....

061.jpg

...less snow on the mountains and the ruggedness was disappearing...

A little pond...

082.jpg

Funky road...You feel like you're on a roller coaster on the flat-land

084.jpg

Getting closer to White Horse....almost there...

Oops, someone missed the runway....;)

106.jpg

...just kidding.....

Being an old pilot, I had always wanted to fly one of these birds...I think they are beautiful....

107.jpg

Well, White Horse was not the place to stay. I checked out the motels and they were all $100 or more.
The evening was young and I decided to continue on the drive until something better came along, if anything would....

...and I'm glad I did as I have never in all my miles driven, seen so much wild life that I was to see on the next leg of the journey.

I have to downsize the pictures to show them to you but I can't do it right now as I have to leave this motel in 10 minutes.

Have a wonderful day....

I'm close to 3 ports on the way back up. Astoria, Oregon....... South Bend, Washington....... Westport, Washington.

You feel like hittin' any of those, you give me a heads up. I'll buy the first round of microbrews and shake your hand. Got a buddy who'll slobber all over your bowsprit too.

Take care my friend, and enjoy every inch of your trip.

Looking forward to it and to meeting you and your friend who appreciates a classic Herreshoff ketch :):D PM me your phone number and we'll contact you when we get near your area. We will avoid Colombia River because of the bars and will check the charts to see where we can make landfall.
