How many of those rail spike knives do I have to make to be a real knife maker?

In all seriousness, I say try freehand and using fixtures to grind and see what works for you. After several years of trying different setups, I finally feel that my freehand skills are coming along. It took a lot of ruined blanks to get there but I think it was worth it.
