Advice Needed!

I didn't mean for this to turn into a Paypal bashing thread. Sorry.
I just wanted to drop some advice on how to protect yourself.
Click on the link I provided, you'll find everything you need.
thanks.

I don't mean to bash Paypal. Like I said I receive money through them every day. They're just too convenient to not use.
It's just wise to keep in mind, there are no protections when they are the ones making mistakes. Generally they do a good job--I'd say 99%. In my experience, though, they will screw you when they mess up, which is rare, but still disappointing.
SteelNut probably has a good solution there.

Buyer #1 replied that he took no offence, and was willing to wait while I transferred the money out of PP into my bank. That is supposed to take 3 - 4 days. My PP account balance is now zero.

If, in the unlikely case that this is a scam, the buyer claims non-delivery and squeals to PP, are you suggesting that PP can make an unauthorized raid on my personal bank account? I don't think that is possible. I will use signature confirmation when I send, because I have been taught here that delivery confirmation is well nigh useless.

I don't know what agreement PP has with the banks, but they can debit your PP account and take any future funds. This would essentially force you to close the PP account.

I would also suggest that you send the parcel and insure it for at least $300, this requires that the recipient sign for it (anything over $200 requires a signature, but $200 does not) This gets you the signature you want and it also adds the insurance in case there is a problem.

Good luck.

:D:D

I doubt they can 'raid' a bank account. They can 'raid' your PP account. That's what happened to us.

They can probably charge your credit card or maybe even put you to collections if they think you owe them something.

Like I said, I use Paypal. I don't think they're crooks or anything. They've screwed us once, and we've had countless transactions through Paypal over the years.

Take it for what it's worth.:)

If you have money in your PP account, they would have access to it. If they tried to withdraw funds from your actual bank account without your approval, then you would have a legitimate lawsuit on your hands.

Personally, I don't like to use Paypal, that's why I just send M/Os & prefer to take them.

For volume stuff, I guess it's a necessary "evil." It sounds like you took the necessary precautions. I don't think Paypal can "raid" your bank account, unless you've connected them with a bank draft # or something like that.

Otherwise, by separating them, you should be fine. I also think (Just my opinion, but based on over 7 yrs. of investigative specific experience), you can NEVER be 100% safe from a scam. What you can do is what you have done & pretty much of everyone else has said. Make sure your Paypal account is separate from everything else (& that may mean being an "unverified" account), not keeping money in the Paypal account (Until necessary), sending higher end property insured, & using signed delivery confirmation.

The final thing, as "pkdmyslf" has wrote, is to keep documentation of EVERYTHING. It wouldn't hurt to keep copies of email transmissions, either. At leat until everything's cleared.

Of course, I'm assuming most of you take all these precautions with new &/or unknown people, & probably not as "unforgiving" with known (& good prior experience) people.

Oh well, it's a shame we have to be so cautious, but you have to protect yourself.

Great thread, BTW.

All's well that ends well. Buyer reports he has received the knife and is happy with it. I can exhale now. Thanks for all your comments/advice.
