I made a trade with a member of BF and asked that he shipped first due to lack of feedback. In his emails back and forth with me, he mentioned that he worked at a boarding school, but while browsing the school website, I noticed that he is a student at the school. I am not comfortable shipping a knife to a student at a school.

Does anyone know if it is illegal to ship knives to students at a school? I know in my area, it is illegal to have a knife in your possession at any type of school, college included. Had I known this before making the trade, I would have never made the trade.

Any advice on this is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

My wife works at a boarding school and according to their policy yes it illegal to have weapons in the rooms and on school grounds.

So has he already mailed his part of the trade?

If so, I would contact him and try to hash things out as long as he is over 18. But unless he has a good reason for lying and a home address or PO Box (that you can confirm on Google maps or similar) I would nix the deal.

And I certainly wouldn't knowingly mail a knife to a school address. If the secretary should open the box and calls the cops, who do you think they will want to speak to in addition to the recipient?

You didn't mention the school by name, but if it is a highschool (or middle/elementary school for that matter) there's no way I'd go through with the deal because, chances are, your deal was made with a minor and he is having it mailed to his school to hide it from mommy and daddy. If that's the case, an admin may want to check out his account as well.

Thanks for the replies guys. Ranger, my thoughts exactly. He has already mailed the knife and I received it today. Had I known that he was underage at the time, I would have never taken the deal, however I had no reason to suspect he was lying about his age. According to the info I found, he is underage and this is a boarding school up to 12th grade.

I offered to still make the trade if he had a home address to ship the knife too and even offered to refund his shipping cost, but I haven't heard back from him yet.

My concern now is, how to I return his knife to him? Even if I ship it back, I am still shipping a knife to a school. Is it possible to reject a package from USPS after it has been delivered?

It would be beneficial to share his username in order to prevent others from getting involved in a similar predicament.

I believe that as long as the package is unopened, you can write "return to sender" on it and the post office will return it.

As far as the legality is concerned, my personal opinion is that the legality of having the knife he shipped to you is his concern, not yours. He met your conditions for the trade, you now have his knife, but you don't want to complete the deal, so you should send it back.

Just my opinion.

Sounds like this kid mislead you when he said he "worked" at the school. Add to that he is most likely a minor. I don't have anything against responsible youngsters owning knives but I wouldn't want to be dealing knives to a minor especially if I had to ship it to a school where he was not allowed to have it. I wouldn't do it. I wouldn't lose any sleep over not doing it. Just get him his knife back, I guess. Incidentally, I attend a large public university and policy states that a folding knife with a blade longer than 4" in length is prohibited. I usually err on the side of caution and only tote a Leatherman Juice when on campus. I think it is a reasonable policy. Good luck and let us know.
