Advice on a recent gec purchase?

My first and only GEC is a 72 Cody Jack. When I got it, you could see light between the brass liners and the bone covers, some places a very large gap. For me, this was not the biggest thing. Whoever did the bolsters that was much have been looking at some pretty lady. They are extremely uneven. I would guess at least 1/32". Does not affect the function but I was very disappointed to the point of putting several other "wants" on hold. I also had to grind down the centre hump in the back spring in order to keep it from nicking the blade. All of this said, it has been my sole carry for the last 6 months. It functions very well and cuts like a dream. Certainly a good tool but disappointing from the perspective of a collector. Maybe if I were closer to Knives ship free I would have returned it but I live in northern Canada and the return shipping just wasn't worth it.

I had a very unfortunate experience with my first GEC knife, a #68 Pony Jack - it was, sadly, just as perfectly and beautifully executed as all of the hype implied it would be. Up until that time, the price tag had kept me away from GEC and I had been quite happy with my Case knives (which are still fine knives at their price point). Now I'm up to a dozen GEC knives and not a bad one in the bunch, and not a single GEC purchase that I regret.

You're lucky that your first experience wasn't good - maybe it will save your wallet from doom!

But in all seriousness - that knife looks like someone used it and buffed the blade afterwards. I've got a number of Northfields and the only one that has the main blade that looks like that with the etch so light is one I bought used with a patina on the blade that I chose to polish off. Yours looks used to me, whether or not it was.

If you want a Tidioute bone or dead skunk acrylic I will trade you for it, I'll even spit shine it before it leaves...

Well it's certainly good to know that I'm not alone, jmarston. But unfortunate that you also had a less than ideal first gec experience.
Up until that time, the price tag had kept me away from GEC and I had been quite happy with my Case knives
This has been exactly my mentality up until now. My case sowbellys and congress have served me quite well over the past few years, but decided I'd finally make the leap into the gec pool and see what all the fuss is about :D. Wish I could say this experience will keep my wallet from drowning, but unfortunately I think I'd be lying to myself if I said that haha. Gec just makes to many gorgeous knives, and Ive already found myself trying to sell part of my (small) collection of other knives to fund these few gec purchases.

But yes i agree, I think it was definitely used. I even went back and looked at the stock pictures I saved from the website and the blades/bolsters don't seem to look like that in the original photos I first saw.

I don't deny it jc57.
Thanks very much for the offer knifeswapper, I apprecaite it. However, I'm really diggin the sea glass, so I think I'll take a shot at exchanging it with the dealer first.

It WOULD turn me off....to each his own but if I was buying a new knife I would expect a new knife. No Matter what ***** (I am guessing dissing an advertiser is a no-no) has to say about it, that is unacceptable to me!

You need to back off on the aggressiveness. No matter who you are talking about. We are all friends here. Your opinion is welcome. Dissing anyone else's is not.

I can agree, the price should reflect the condtion of the knife. Depending on how this transaction gets sorted out, I certainly think I'll most likely try to avoid this dealer in the future.

I will definitely give an update once I get it sorted out. Thanks again for all the help guys, really enjoy this forum.

Looks used if you want my honest opinion. Ive never had one new with a scruffy blade like that nor those other signs of useage.
I'm glad it hasn't dampened your enthusiasm for GEC and their generally brilliant products:D

Mr. Gearhead22, It just so happens that I have a 22 Magnum Sea Glass Acrylic, new in tube. I would be more than happy to trade you, even up. PM or Email your info and you'll have a new knife in a couple of days.

Just emailed you back Bob. What an incredible gesture! The generosity around here always kind of astounds me.  :)

BladeForums is a great place for many reasons. You get folks stepping in that simply want to turn your transaction into a great one for you.

One of the things that I try to avoid in these types of thread is assuming someone else had ill intent. And for a dealer (and I have no clue where he bought this knife) to send you a used knife and insist it is new; is a little beyond what I would like to think could happen with any dealers I know. So, many times I take the devils advocate approach that maybe there is another, more innocent, scenario. The picture looks awful. I will be interested in Bob's opinion when he gets it in hand. I have been dead wrong about forum posted pictures before, but always trying to be optimistic.

Mike, one of the things that I admire about you (and secretly am envious of) is your ability to always give other people the benefit of the doubt. I would consider that a virtue, not a fault. I've seen it on display here more than once, and I applaud you for it.

Bob and Mike are both great people! GEC doesnt' have a lot of dealers but it has been my experience that every single one of them are stand up guys and gals.
