Advice on a recent gec purchase?

BladeForums is a great place for many reasons. You get folks stepping in that simply want to turn your transaction into a great one for you.
That is certainly something I've come to notice in the short time I've been around here, knifeswapper. It's really great to be apart of an online community like this one, where there's so many generous and incitful members.

One of the things that I try to avoid in these types of thread is assuming someone else had ill intent.
This is my thought exactly. When i got the knife, i never wanted to assume that they sent me a used knife on purpose and get immediately angry. I'm a very patient man, and as luck would have it I just heard back from the dealer this afternoon, after the original 2 email exchange.
They replied telling me that since I wasn't happy with the knife, that they would give a full refund including postage to send it back, or let me pick another knife of the same value of there site. Obviously this message came to late as I already took Bob up on his VERY generous trade offer. However, it somewhat restores my faith in the dealer and at least there is now the possibility that it actually was an honest mistake. While that doesn't change the fact that they insisted the knife was new, the better person in me would like to believe that maybe it was just a mixup in their nventory or something.
Needless to say, I replied telling them that I would just keep the knife, since my new one is already on its way, courtesy of Bob! :D
And yes grins000 it is a very gorgeous knife :)

Thanks again everybody for your feedback!

Well the OP received his new knife on Monday. I guess he just hasn't had time to post anything. The questionable knife is in-bound to me at this point.

I'm sure he will Bob. That was a nice gesture.

 Beyond nice, I'd say. It's not often that a vendor will take care of somebody else's customer like that. I'm sure the OP will be along shortly. He seemed very grateful, and I can't imagine that he wouldn't want to let us know how the replacement turned out.

The marks on the bolsters could be grind/buffing errors from the factory. If so, it should have been sold as a Second.

The blade sure looks like someone rubbed it with something abrasive. Although the severity could be exaggerated by the photo, I doubt that happened at the factory.

I'm anxious to read what Bob (rma100) thinks, since he's going to get a first-hand look at it.

That's why the front porch can be such a great place.

It's like kids sometimes, "I'll trade you my Knobby for your Swirleye"

Pictures, Gearhead, pictures. We don't want to read a description of the knife, we want to see the dang knife. :p

Just kidding, but seriously can we see some pictures?

This...looks like the knife was used or handled, then returned. A couple scuffs out of the box might be expected, but that looks used.

I was thinking the same thing. I might (politely) send it back and get the new knife I paid for. ;):)

I see you did !

I have never received the knife. Tracking the shipment on the USPS website says the last time the package was scanned was on the 17th of June in Goleta, CA.
Your item departed our USPS facility in GOLETA, CA 93199 on June 17, 2015 at 4:24 pm. The item is currently in transit to the destination.

No he didn't. I traded him a new knife for his knife. I had no prior involvement. For some reason he choose not to return the knife to the Dealer he purchased it from, or to avail himself of GEC Warranty Service.

Rma100, i just saw what your talking about. It must've just got delayed somewhere in between. You should be getting the package soon though.

As rma100 said, he was nice enough to trade me a knife of the same model. I would've sent it back, but the trade was already underway before I heard back from the dealer.

Okay Folks, I received this knife yesterday. I have had a chance to look it over several times. Here are my impressions on the matter after examining the knife. I am by no means a Forensic Knife Authority. I don't believe the OP was Sold a Returned or carried and used knife. In hand, without magnification, most the "issues" are unseen. If you put just about any knife under 10X magnification you can find flaws if you look. I personally go along with, after examination of the piece, with Knifeswappers observations in Post #13. I think this is what could be called a "Monday Morning" or "Friday Afternoon" piece. It's not unheard of for employees to be at less than their best on Monday Mornings. On Friday afternoons, sometimes their mind is on the weekend. It looks to me that the knife did not receive the full benefit of a final Polish. Who knows, maybe the Final Polish person was out for a day or two? Maybe someone not quite as skilled at buff and polish had to fill in? To quote Bill Howard; "These knives are made by people!" Whatever the case, my thoughts are, that's the reason GEC has a Warranty on Workmanship and Materials. Stuff happens. A quick email to the Dealer or the Factory would have righted this very quickly. And secondly, if I had purchased this knife as a user, I would have done just that, used it. After a week or two of use, it will have plenty of scratches to be seen without magnification.

My apologies !

I was guilty of reading the first page of this thread and hitting reply. I should have read on. After reading the whole thread, my reply looks to be antiquated. :o:o

When I typed politely, I did mean that the OP should be nice about it.

One can usually count on catching more flies with honey, rather than vinegar. ;):)

It is refreshing to see the outcome.:thumbup::thumbup::)

I have received a few new knives from GEC and other brands that had some swirl marks, etc. on the bolsters. I simply polished with Flitz, if it was enough to bother me.

Hey, if there are scuffs just use a Q-tip, Nail Clippers, and some Flitz to touch up all but the etching. A couple drops of Flitz on a 1inch x 6inch piece of leather glued to a flat piece of wood should be perfect for the bolsters. Just put the wood in a vice and buff the bolsters on the leather. (Like a strop) If you EDC a blade, the satin finish will obviously get a bit scuffed up anyways so..
