Advice on my first Bowie purchase

When I first started looking at fixed blades, a big bowie is all I wanted. I was thinking Rambo and survival knife whatever that really means. But that is the way I viewed things 25 years ago. We all have to have our fun. I hope you enjoy the 119.

Hate to admit this, but I was cleaning out a house and there was a Buck 119 lying there inside. Didn't want it and tossed it in the trash.

that's just sad, a 119 would have easily been picked up by a forum member, and they'd cover the shipping costs I'm certain...

bos 420hc is decent budget steel :)

It was a little sad actually. It was in the kitchen sink and somebody who lived there took a dump in the sink and the knife was mixed in with it..... grossed me out. I wouldn't have felt right selling or giving that knife away. Didn't really want to go into detail, but I had good reason to toss that knife. I find cheap knives frequently in these places. That was probably the best one I ever found.

CM, I have a kitty that looks a lot like yours. It was my wife's brother's and we gave it a new home when he died. It has been a year now and Cally wants to always be where ever I'm at in the house.

You made a good choice going with the 119.

Sometimes there is just not enough bleach....

:) The CS cable tang is MORE expensive to manufacture . The purpose is to absorb shock and vibration to protect the user's grip . The only one I've seen made nonfictional was by some idiot who pounded on the handle like he was driving a stake into the ground . The cable didn't break but the handle was busted up which allowed the cable to go slack . I consider the Natchez and Laredo to be mostly fighting Bowies . Trail master , Recon Scout , or maybe the new Drop Forged Survivalist or Bowie would all be better for camping / bushcraft use . Why not get them all !:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Believe it or not, I have heard of some experts (a few) who recommend that as a test for a survival knife. Pretty dangerous test. But obviously it wouldn't work for a knife with a cable tang. And I wouldn't do it on any knife with a hidden tang/wooden handle either. You don't know what kind of construction method was used in there and wood handles are not meant to hammer on. I ended up getting them all, starting with the biggest first (Natchez). Very nice and functional bowies by Cold Steel.

Like the Svord too. If you ever want a bigger one, try the Buck 120 General, it can also be found in 5160 if want a carbon blade. I bet with a 110 or 112 folding knife, you would well set for any adventure. Good luck with the 119 too.

Hey mate I got the trailmaster in 0-1 steel it was on special so I could not resist. I really like it except the handle can be a bit slippery when I have sweaty hands so I wrapped it in hockey tape and it feels awesome. Looking at a Becker bk9 next!

Awesome man!!!!! It’s very hard not to like it. Good lord it’s a good looking capable Bowie! I have always been a fan. I have the trail master and the recon scout, love them both dearly. I’m in Texas so the Bowie is very close to my heart. Remember the Alamo!!!
