Advise on Steel Type To Use For Hard Use Hunter/Camp Knife -

Thanks Terry,

BUT FIRST: Peter, I heard what you just said. :grumpy: "why's everybody always pick'n on me?". Besides you have me at an advantage. How can a man such as I afford a round of golf anyhow, and; I am never seen in an umbrella. :)

Terry, I don't even think I, maybe I did, ask about 1084 because I don't know of a source for it to me. I was consideing 1075/1080. O1 I love for myself. The cosmetics of it have kept me from promoting it to customers. Perhaps I am doing them a disservice. 5160 was my very first choice without even posting this thread. I just don't want to get too found of one steel for any particular purpose. I am too young in my knife making to get too locked in and there are too many good steels yet to learn. I like 1095 for this one. I got a good feeling about it.

gadsss Roger I thought you said a chopper  6" :D

use O1,, unless he's a knife maker with other steels under his belt he'll
see not enough difference to bother with. I'll bet 2 bucks on it.. :D

I still meen that...
for a real chopper 10" and up,, I'd do the 1095 .

for reg ole Carbon.. hey what did I win anyway  :)

Now what are you saying; you wouldn't choose 1095 for 6" camp/hunting knife? I haven't ordered the steel yet.

for some reason Roger I thought you said Chopper? then I just re-read
about 6" 3/16 to 1/4 thick

I've made a lot more machetes than hunters out of 1095,
and finally last hunting season I got to test a hunter with 1095 in the field
butchering deer myself. my o1 blade that I made 30 years ago out did the 1095 hunter I made last winter, now either I'm getting worse at heat treating
after 30 years or it's the steel,,,, I'm hoping it's the steel :( :)

I really do like the 1095 for it's, spring back, cost for the size (like in a machete) but that's about it for 1095 itself..for blade use anyway..

Roger if you want some 1095 for that blade to try tell me and I'll send you some but it's 5/32..I have one that's 1 1/8" X 9" 3/4" OR one, 2 1/2" X 7"
I can dig around and find more..or use it to test with to see if you like it..
I'd just play with the shorter pieces anyway or use it for a Damascus mix
I won't use it as is in a small knife again. just my preference only guys.

sorry for the misunderstanding, and a little leg pulling..

Thanks Dan. Based on that I have changed now to 1084, so who knows a source for enough 1084 - please??

If I can't find 1084 I'll use 1075/1080.

 you want less carbon? just wondering why?

I suppose you are referencing my next choice of 1075. It is still more carbon than my third and good choice: 5160.

I now want 1084 but don't know where to find it.

Okay, I'm going to stick my neck out here. When I mentioned 1084, it was merely another suggestion.

Dan, I should let Roger speak for himself, but I "think" that his concerns might be because of the very short "window" 1095 has to miss the nose curve, due the low manganese content. A lot of makers seem to have trouble with it. 1084 does not have this "potential" problem.

However, I'm with you brother. 1095 is a real good steel if you do get it done right. I have a little 1095 blade right here beside my computer, that I forged out of 1095 round stock.

Anyway, I wasn't going to reply any more in this thread because it would look like I was pushing the 1084 issue. Like I said, I was just offering up another suggestion.

Now ... The reason I am back in here now is because Roger directly asked me in another thread (not related) where he could get some 1084 for this project. I did not want to go off topic in the other thread, so here I am.

#####

Roger,
I just bought a 20 foot sample from Pacific Machinery & Tool Steel Company. I don't know if they have the width you want or not. When I called them I only inquired about the size I was specifically looking for, which happend to be 1/4" x 1" wide stock for my hunter sized blades.

They assured me that this was not 1080 being passed of as 1084. They said that they stay very close to spec. I could have gotten an analysis done for current... u-m-m-m... oh heck what do you call it -- batch, lot, run, or whatever for an extra $10. I opted to waive that and just give it a shot. If I like it I'll pay for the analysis and probably order some more.

By the way, If I had any in the size you want I'd send you piece. I just don't have it.

Roger re: 1084 - have you checked with Kelly Cupples 509-728-0057
or K & G : both sources have carried 1084 in the past.

Thanks Chuck. I emailed Kelly with my request a couple hours back. We will see.

Terry, thanks a bunch for the link. Actually the critical quench of 1095 is an attraction to me (I am probably a sick fellow). There was a miscommunication and Dan thought I was making a much larger knife. I am now wanting very much to use 1084 for this 6 inch blade. If I can't get it in the size I need I suppose I'll go with 1075 / 1080 from Admiral.

RL

Roger - I've been told it's best to call Kelly so if he doesn't answer your email don't give up on him.

Kelly responded. There is no size of 1084 close to what I need in his steel listing. I'll call Terry's source tomorrow. I am getting the impression 1084 when available is in sizes more suitable for forging rather than stock removing from larger sizes. If Terry's source fails I will order 1080 from Admiral.

Thanks to all for helping.

RL
