Affordable Knife

You can't go wrong with the knives that have been suggested. If I were to spend it all on one knife, I would get the JYD (full sized). It is a handfull and a half of quality knife. A bit much EDC though if you carry other things in your pockets.

On the other hand, an excellent budget stretcher would be the Tenacious. I got one of these a couple of weeks ago and have been using it in my construction job. It is simply a great knife. The blade is a full 1/8" thick, and it's flat ground to hold that working edge for heavy cutting. I like it so much, that at $30 I might buy another just to make sure I had one on hand. It is flat enough to easily carry in the jean pockets, too.

I would stick a Kershaw Junkyard Dog, S30V/S60V (OD green handled) Blur, Groove, Ener-g, R.A.M. and others from that price range.

I do not like the zytel handles on the griptillian series--feels very cheap, the G-10, however on the JYD/Groove feels awesome.

Good luck with your purchase!

I would go for an endura, or a full size grip. The JYD with composite blade you were thinking about would be a solid choice too.

My vote is split - the Kershaw JYDII 1725CB is great - I got two afor Christmas - I carry one clipless in my back pocket a lot. Of course, a Blur was my EDC for years - and I added that S30V Blur last fall. Still, these are my back bocket 'big' knives. The majority of my knife needs are met by a Spyderco Native S30V in my front pocket. Maybe replacing your Spyderco is a choice?

Keep in mind I carry knives as tools (I am not a LEO.).

PS Don't most evil-bay stores/vendors ship north?

JYD II, for sure. You'd be hard-pressed to find better bang-for-the-buck, but value aside, it's just a cool, niiiice handful of knife, regardless of cost. Heck, the liner locks on these are thicker than some frame locks! Get the standard JYD II in Sandvik 13C26 for about $50, or the D2-edged composite blade for around $75.

JYDII Composite is a great choice. You might also give a look to the Cold Steel American Lawman as I've read some good things about this knife.

You've gotten some good advice here. I like the way the JYD II fits my hand, and it's an excellent deal. The Benchmade Griptilians are a fine choice as well.

I usually would toss in a plug for the Pocket Bushman, but it's a little tough to open one-handed, so you wouldn't want it for a "last defense". If you've got time to use both hands, it's a very sturdy knife, especially for the price.

Another vote for Benchmade Griptillian or mini-Grip. No worries on the zytel. This is a great knife for the money.

I own and EDC both of these JYD II's. I really like them, these are a great bang for the buck. They are the right size that fit the hand, the G10 works at keeping it in hand so it's doesn't slip even when working with gloves on.

I have JYDII and both size Grips- for my medium sized hands I prefer the Mini Grip. I've carried it for over two years now and couldn't be happier- fits my hand well, good blade shape & size, small enough to notget in the way in my pocket, but big enough for anything I've needed it for.

On the smaller Grip you don't get the hollow sound from the scales like you do on the larger one (that's what makes them seem "cheap" even though they're not). To me, the JYD is just waaay too big and heavy to EDC- but that's just me. I also prefer the Axis lock to just about anything but an ARC lock.

DO NOT BUY A POCKET BUSHMAN

I like mine but I have to agree here. You can't open or close it one handed and you have to be careful when closing no matter what. Not very good for a stressful situation. When it closes the lock slams the blade closed with enough force to take a deep bite out of whatever is in the way.

I just received a Spyderco G10 Delica. It's awesome. Cost about $95.
It's my new favorite <4" knife.

You should get one.

Check out the Spyderco Scorpius. It looks weird, but once you actually handle it, you'll change your mind. It's been my EDC for years now, and I love it. You can pick them up for around 60 bucks.
