Affordable knives in CPM154

What is the difference between them?

I'm familiar with 154CM. I've never owned a knife with a blade made of CPM-154. I have to believe it's similar to 154CM, or Crucible would have named it differently. It seems safe to assume that with a nearly identical name, the steel must be very, very similar, as well. I'm guessing CPM-154 has only some small improvement over 154CM.

Roughly the same chemical composition, but formulated using a powdered metal process. And yes, it makes a huge difference.

Yup!! Hit the ole nail on the head!
Hogue has been using it lately. I just picked up a blue X5 with it recently.
Pretty sure Benchmade has never used it.......yet.

Guardian Tactical and Protech use the powdered version. Some custom slipjoints can also be found with this steel for around $350 or less.

What do you think of the X5 in general? I'm considering getting one.

Hey HD!
Not really into tacticooly knives, but for some reason I really liked the look of this one.
I have had an EX-04 since they came out and the build really impressed me. Also, Hogue is a pleasure to deal with.
I have been equally impressed with this one! Ridiculously smooth and flips beautifully! Perfectly centered with NO movement IN ANY direction!
The only attribute that I'm not crazy about is there is only one hold position that is comfortable. The index finger cut out has a sharp point that will bother you if your finger comes in contact.
Like the steel also.....takes a screaming edge with very little effort.
Let me know if you need more info or pics brother.

^ Thanks Joe. I've had an EX-02 for a while and like it. The only hesitation I have with this one are the funky "batman" style cues. We shall see...

Cheers

I just found a knife on KnifeCenter that might fit the bill. Nottingham Tactical Ultra3, titanium framelock flipper with CPM-154 blade. I suppose it's kind of a mid-tech, out of a small machine shop here in the US. Looks pretty good at $250. I'm thinking about picking one up, but hadn't ever heard of the knife or company before so I'm going to write a post asking for feedback from owners.

dkb45--CPM D2 is still readily available. Niagara Specialty Metals has slab on the floor for rolling.

stay away from the qmaster knives, they are illegal copies and not what they say they are (eg they are not made in the usa), but you know that already.

my vote goes to Guardian Tactical. a bit more than 200 but you can find them used for cheaper than retail.
the Hogue knives are nice too.

Another vote for Guardian Tac!!!
Excellent knives from a very friendly company.......in the US!!

Spyderco Lil Nilakka in RWL-34 coming out next year. That steel is equivalent to CPM-154.

Joe, your pictures in this thread are KILLING it, man. I really like all three knives you posted. I may have to give those Helixes a look. Of course, I had to pick up a Rittergrip today, so I'll have to wait for a week or so before I buy anything else (the wife would kill me!).

That Jade Helix is droolworthy. Man.

Thanks bro!!!
They make one hell of a knife!!
Great company to deal with also! They are most excellent flippers!

In my experience CPM steels are not similar at all, and don't stand up to impact or chopping at 15 dps or less without making micro-folds (at least not S30V and CPM154)... For medium size daggers and small folders I don't much care, but I still would prefer almost anything else except carbon. Aus-6, Aus-8, 440 and basically any stainless steel made in Japan (especially VG-1) is what I want to see...

Everyone, please disregard this post. Gaston is a troll who has demonstrated repeatedly that he doesn't have any understanding of steels, edge geometry, or how those two things are related.

Carry on.

But his carry system is second to none Quiet!!!!
And please don't forget it!
