Affordable knives in CPM154

In my experience CPM steels are not similar at all, and don't stand up to impact or chopping at 15 dps or less without making micro-folds (at least not S30V and CPM154)... For medium size daggers and small folders I don't much care, but I still would prefer almost anything else except carbon. Aus-6, Aus-8, 440 and basically any stainless steel made in Japan (especially VG-1) is what I want to see...

Gaston

So your experience is with only 2 CPM steels yet you speak about all of them? Good to know. Also, it was pointed out in another thread how you ruin edges by modifying them. Less than 15 dps is silly for what you are trying to accomplish. So there is that as well.....

Well you shouldn't really be using most stainless steels to chop anyway. S30V is all about edge retention, not toughness. CPM154 is far tougher, but still not tough like carbon or tool steels. You also should basically never (unless it was designed that way) take a chopper to a very low edge angle like 15° or less, unless you like catastrophic failure.

Everyone, please disregard this post. Gaston is a troll who has demonstrated repeatedly that he doesn't have any understanding of steels, edge geometry, or how those two things are related.

Carry on.

Thanks for the heads up! We 'new guys' don't who the 'bad guys' are.

Hey HD!
Not really into tacticooly knives, but for some reason I really liked the look of this one.
I have had an EX-04 since they came out and the build really impressed me. Also, Hogue is a pleasure to deal with.
I have been equally impressed with this one! Ridiculously smooth and flips beautifully! Perfectly centered with NO movement IN ANY direction!
The only attribute that I'm not crazy about is there is only one hold position that is comfortable. The index finger cut out has a sharp point that will bother you if your finger comes in contact.
Like the steel also.....takes a screaming edge with very little effort.
Let me know if you need more info or pics brother.

I wanted this knife as soon as I saw it was announced. Hogue with a lefty clip? Button lock flipper? CPM154? What lunatic wouldn't want it if they like the design!? These pictures make me want to consider a blue anodized one, though. I was set on G-mascus but that in blue is drop dead sexy. I drooled a little looking at it.

My reaction exactly!!!!
Took some serious searching to find one since the blue was a LE. Finally found one on eBay for $175 brand new!
They came out with 2 more colors, OD Green and tan. Both with black coated blades.
Saw them on Luv Them Knives on YT.
Seems Hogue doesn't really get the press they deserve.....they are making very well built blades!! Pretty cool that A. Elishewitz, spelling ugh, is designing for them!
This is my second knife from them and both are excellent!
I'll probably pick up a tan one with 4" blade soon.

The benefit of CPM 154 over 154 CM is the grain size and the uniform distibution of carbides. The CPM materials can be taken to a higher hardness with less propensity to chip out because of the finer grain. RWL 34 is a French copy of Japanese ATS 34 which is a copy Crucible's 154CM. I have heard that RWL 34 has a fine grain structure and might be a PM (particle metallurgy) product. Buck made some CPM 154 Model 110's for Cabela's or Bass Pro Shop.

Yeah I saw the green and tan, and wasn't terribly impressed. They don't pop like the blue, they look a lot more generic. I might have to search when I get the money to find a blue one, or call Hogue and see if they will do any more limited runs in fun colors. But of course this thing is already seconded on my list of must buy knives. I need to win the lottery or something...

i really hate this guy and how he keeps buying and showing off replica's, and notice how all the knives are great even tho his only test is to cut paper and he even sucks at that.

That's the one! Soon as I saw that color, and the design, had to have it!!
That guy sold the ones he had on eBay.
He also has a vid with the newer releases.

His thumbnails make me uncomfortable.

Anybody happen to have owned one of these and a Freeman 451? Wondering how the flipping action and button locks compare.

It seems he loses his train of thought every 10'seconds, loves clones, doesn't know what a nail clipper is, has no clue how to slice paper and he really loves clones!!!!
Ugh.
First vid I saw on his channel was the Hogue vid. Checked out other ones and haven't been back.

Might not fit the bill but KSF farms out Northwoods traditionals sometimes in CPM154 I had a barlow of theirs for a bit.

Not the brightest bulb on the string, is he? He could have done that in less than 10 minutes, except for all of his pointless rambling.

It IS a very nice looking knife in the blue. The all black 4" version must look very tacticool. I would love to own the blue one, but they are not at all inexpensive. $200 for a very well made knife with a decent blade steel is not at all overpriced, in today's market. I can't remember if he said it was made in the USA, or not. I don't think he did, because that's something I notice and remember. I prefer to buy American.

He's bad enough as it is.....but on top of that he sings the praises of clones and says it is ridiculous to pay $500 for a Microtech. Meanwhile he's paying $150 for crap.....again & again & again! Nauseating.
Then try and watch him attempt slicing paper. You gotta be kidding me.

The blue Hogue I picked up cost me $175. Also, all Hogue knives are 100% USA produced. You're right, the prices aren't bad at all. They are built extremely well with great materials!
My X5 flips beautifully, is perfectly centered and locks up TIGHT!! The button lock is really cool too!
I really like it!
Joe
