After decades I've figured out I hate jack knives.

I'm starting to understand why my opinions are not universally respected on The Porch. o_O:rolleyes:
Here are some of my beloved canoes. Note that none of them have their dangerous tang corners exposed, so no need to worry about damage to pockets nor about disembowelment and/or castration.

Your friend, and canoesseur forever,
GT
I respect all opinions (in terms of knife preference at least), everybody has a right to theirs. I do like canoes, especially single back spring ones, it is just that they are one of my least favorite patterns.
I also used to have a small collection of canoe water craft. I lost 3 to a forest fire and sold one which I could no longer carry by myself, so am down to 1.

I'm kinda shocked someone hasn't chimed in with hate for single blade clip point lockbacks
I don't hate them ALL, Jim, but in another thread yesterday I confessed to thinking the Buck 110 is an exceptionally unattractive knife for me. 🤓 And I've bought numerous 3.5" single blade clip lockbacks and given them away because, although they look good to me, when I actually get one, I really don't like carrying or using them very much. FWIW, I got this one from my daughter recently and thus will NOT be giving this one away.;)

I carried this Ulster for 40 years and it served me very well but I never did like to feel another blade spline when using it . During the 40 years , I would not spend any more money on a knife . Now I have a few more knives with various numbers of blades and various patterns and I do not hate any of them . When it comes time to choose a knife to go out and work with , I will almost always choose a One Bladed knife which automatically makes it a Jack . There was one period of a few years where I considered the difference in price of $10 between a 1 bladed and a 2 bladed knife .

Harry, whenever you post that Ulster, I'm filled with admiration for you and the knife!:thumbsup::cool:

Went through a, Cheap, Canoe buying phase, about a decade ago, as for some reason I liked the pattern, but ended up not liking to carry or use it.... Still, they are pretty and uniform and were cheap, at the time.

Here are some of them:
Glad to see another canoe advocate, even if you're not overflowing with enthusiasm for the pattern!🤓 I have a Buck stag canoe like yours that is one of my favorite knives.
Your phrase that I put in boldface in the quote represents my position very well. I like to look at almost every knife pattern, but I've discovered that there are many of them that just don't "click" with me as knives I enjoy using.

I don't like the canoe pattern either but please, GT, use what floats your boat.
😁 Aye, Aye, Captain!
I do NOT really think my opinions are held in low esteem here. One of the things about The Porch that grabbed me almost immediately is how accepting of different opinions, tastes, etc. the folks here are. (But my wife would say I'm too socially insensitive to know, or care, if my opinions are respected or not.)

It seems 99% of my favorites are in a pen configuration, but I like jacks just fine.
The frame the size and the blade selection are what matters most to me, I don't really give much thought to what ends the blades are on and my favorites just happen to be a pen configuration.

Well all this conversation has me getting out my only pen knife (and ironically my smallest knife)
The buck 309

Cleaned it up, touched up the edges and re-oiled it with mineral oil.

I don't hate this knife by any stretch
But I keep thinking it wants to commit suicide by jumping out of my pockets :p

I’ll buck the trend. I don’t like single blade knives as much as multiples. I prefer my case folding hunter to my buck 110. And I prefer my schrade 752 advertising knife to my mini copperlock.

And here is the real trend bucker.... I prefer a knife with some belly verses a straight blade.

I won't say I don't like them but I don't get the point of huge slip joints.
In my daily life I hardly ever need a blade larger than 3.5" and when I do I want a solid fixed blade.
To each his own but I just don't get it.

You never had to fight the French
I dunno, whoever else the Spanish had to fight with their navajas

Jack knife has a rich history in the traditional knife world. I wouldn't think you would find many haters among serious traditional accumulators. 😊
Maybe "don't like" might be a better way to say it. ;)
