After Sale Lounge

Just to be clear, I was asking, I am not offering. Based on an earlier comment in this thread and other comments in the proxy request thread I have seen mention of payment. I was surprised so I asked.
Anyone found to be doing this would be “persona non grata” around here. They would likely end up in the creek rusting with the other grey turds never to return. Not even zombified.

Old timers here know

Whoa I think this is pretty poor form. A last minute “proxy“ 30 minutes after the fact and the “proxee” also participated in the sale. If you don’t want what’s available, it should pass you and go to the next in line. @Blues

*if it’s worked this way in the past I’ll eat my shoe but I don’t think I’ve seen it before and this sale was definitely different so there’s that also. Apologies if so!

Yeah can't get a proxy and also post on the same thread.

I kinda regret doing this wonky sale today. We had mixed inventory and I figured we'd just sell it like we always did but holy smokes.

Thank you everyone. I think we all did a pretty good job of figuring out what goes where. Mostly.

It literally took me an hour to sort it it out and there are still a few I'm uncertain about but Jo will figure it out on Monday lol

Happy weekend foks!

Are people paying for proxies?

I would hope not, but people are going to do what people are going to do.

Knife collecting is supposed to be fun. I don't want ninjas swooping in and injecting themselves into a transaction they don't need to be in so they can make a profit at the collectors expense. These sales are already crazy enough without adding a profit motive.

That said, I do think it would be good to compensate folks like DericDesmund (Eric) who travels to a show and picks up stuff on his own dime to help spread the love with his pals here. He doesn't ask for anything in return but I think it would be reasonable to add a little bit (even if he objects) for his time and trouble and utilizing his capital in the process.

Bless her heart! Thank you for putting this sale on. I know it had to be a pain, it does not go unnoticed. 😁

I’ll probably get flamed for this but why are there even proxies? I mean if you can’t get to a computer for the sale then wait until the next one. I had asked for a proxy for todays sale because I thought I wasn’t going to be available. Others did also but I guess the people that are being the proxies pick who they want and not the next person who had requested. I got skipped over, maybe I’m too new for anyone to want to proxy for me? Or I guess maybe people are paying the proxy people. Seems to me if you’re trying to get in on the sale then you should be present and try yourself. Slow computer or internet go to the local library and use theirs..

Rant over.

This is a nice community. People try to help others. Work schedules, timezones, slow old fingers, plenty of reasonable reasons why someone might want a hand.

The longer you're around, the more chance you'll score or somebody will help you out

Best to be patient until then

Not just a matter of being available at the time of the sale. Some people (and their phones, computers, etc) are just not fast enough to ever have a shot, so they request help from someone who's known to be successful at it.

No. I think I'm going to quit doing it after today because of all the bad feelings that it seems to create.
I'll publicly state that I was surprised and a little disheartened by the sheer volume of requests. Even though in the past I've been a big advocate given the brisk nature of the sales. Not knocking the requests, simply the state of what it was this week.

I had someone in mind to help out but was shut down in the spirit of fairness. Worked out, and he scored his own. The influx of requests was enough to cause me to pause when considering offering it out to someone else.

Not to fan the flame, but this has got to be getting old to people just trying to peddle some blades, drink some beers, and cut some wood. Rome may, in fact, be unintentionally burning :( I hate to think we're causing it.

I wouldn't personally deal with this type of mob shit in my business. Thank you CPK crew for dealing with it as long as you have.

I wasn’t going to participate due to how confusing I thought this would be and a dog fight and who was trying to claim what with one of this and one of that. The 2 I really wanted were the 2- DEK’s w/ swedge but didn’t think I’d be fast enough to be in the first 2.

My intention was to try and get one of the 2 I REALLY wanted and to help out a fellow member who has really been longing for a DEK 2 (longer than me) at the same time.

I don’t realize it was either a Proxy for someone else or a sale for yourself.

Either way, my selections were pretty much been the same requests, so I didn’t see the harm.

Sorry for the confusion guys and the hard feelings it may have caused certain folks. Was just trying to participate myself and help out a fellow member at the same time.

This is only my 3rd time being in on a successful sale. 1st I got a BFK for myself, 2nd time I was a successful proxy, and 3rd time was this (a mess apparently). Anyways my spot has been completely passed along, so I’ll learn from my inadvertent mistake and move on.

A mixed sale is going to be tough with most members only trying for knives they want the most or don’t have yet, it leads to a lot of choices and decisions that change on the fly. Have a few beers on me and add it to my bill for finally making it into a Friday sale.! It’s been a long time trying!

I think the way it originated was simple enough. Somebody would be good at getting in on the sale and one of their friends was not and so they would get a knife for one of their friends. Nothing wrong with buying a knife and then sending it to someone. And then, for simplicity they cut out the additional shipping. And he pays for it. And in the end we have the system that we have. It isn't perfect but nothing ever is.

I agree, shows are different, since unless you're local, you're paying significantly out of pocket just to be there in money and time. If I were to go to BLADE, darn sure I'd ask for a premium for helping people, because it would cost me probably $1,500+ just to be there. For forum sales, though, I mean, I'd be ticked if people started taking money for that, since there's no investment in doing it other than ten seconds of your time and being available consistently on Friday afternoons at 3 or 5 p.m. Eastern.

I believe it is because sales are always at the same time and on the same day. If people are gone, or working, etc., they might never get a chance to go for a sale. This sort of expanded to people who are maybe just lacking fast internet, or who are maybe older or physically less competitive or technologically less savvy. No one is entitled to a proxy, people who proxy (I think) do it out of a sense of community. At least, I do. So if you're a known quantity and a regular forum participant in the CPK forum, you'll find more people willing to proxy for you if you ask. We try to pay things forward as we can. When I picked the people I offered to proxy for, I offered first to people who are regular participants whose names I recognized, then to new people who have been participants in the forum, have said they don't yet own a CPK, and who participate in Bladeforums in more places than the buy, sell, and trade subforums.

I think it's the inevitability of getting big and popular. What makes me kind of sad is the grumbling and complaining afterward. It's a knife. They're great knives, sure, but they're just knives. There will be others. No one is suffering because they don't have the one they want, when they want it.
