Age for boys first knife?

Wow. a thread from 2002. Where did you find that one?;)

Personally I think 6 is a good age for a first knife. That's when I got my first "hunting" knife. (Ok, ok it had fake stag plastic handles with a bright red plastic pommel, and a fake leather sheath, but it was my first knife.)

Kind regards,

Jos

The subject has been discussed many times since then and the usual final consensus is that it varies with the maturity of the child.

:yawn::yawn:any way, i realize all these things, i simply wanted to know of a knife advertised specifically as a boys first knife kinda like a keep sake type deal. i did a little research last eve, and only found the boy scout knife listed as that. not really what i had in mind, and stainless, but i may settle for it.

I gave my 6 year old his fisrt SAK(Hiker with Name Engraved) this summer.

We went camping for 3 days, just the two of us, and I had time to teach the basics. He was safe and I only had to holler STOP a few times. All i let him do the first day was open and close it. He did a good job of paying attention to blade direction, etc. All knife use was under my DIRECT supervision.

I figure once a child is obeying other basic safety rules(wear a bike helmet, look both ways before crossing the street, etc.) they can be taught to use knives safely. I explained to him the seriousness of what he was learning, and how easy it can be to get very hurt if the rules aren'y followed, just as crossing the street, hot stove, fire, bike helmets, etc.

The knife stays with me unless we are together outside, then he can keep it in his pocket.

Opinel makes a blunted tip kids knife. im sure it comes in carbon.

I got my first knife when i was 8. the ground rules were set, i cut myself about 15 minutes latter when the sak closed on me. My dad took a look, and handed me a band aid. haven't cut myself since. Well, drawn blood anyways. I have shaved off skin.

Got my first pocketknife when I was 7, an Old Timer stockman. It was sharp out of the box, and I have a couple of small scars to prove it, but that was part of the learning process. I personally would let him have a relatively sharp knife. I would think that detuning a blade too much would make him force some cuts that might be more dangerous.

Either way, I'm sure he'll still love that first pocketknife :)

i got mine at age 6.

8 seems to be the general age people accept. As far as detuning the knife, don't make it shaving sharp but don't make it a butter knife. Make it sharp enough to cut easily, though, for sure.

At the current age of 14, I think the "kid" is probably ready for his EDC.

And to make up for the last six years of waiting, it wouldn't hurt to make it a Sabenza.

My 8 year old has a few knives but like others have said, he only uses it when we are out together and is supervised. He doesn't have a problem with this at all.

My parents would never buy me one but my dad let a pharmaceutical rep give me my first knife when I was 10. Now I have like 30 white victorinox knives with the name of some rx drugs that probably dont exist anymore.

never cut myself with one.

but when I was a freshman in high school I was given a nice CV barlow as a christmas gift from one of my very best friends. I used it heavily for about 2 months before I accidentally nicked the back of my hand and even though it was a tiny cut I sure learned my lesson, all hands clear!

All my kids got their "first" knives when thety showed a desire and responsibility to have them. About the age of 10. I have showed them how to sharpen, they aint good, still learning. As a parent, I do watch closely, and yes, I will correct when wrong, and help them to learn.

I got my first knife at 6. I broke it the first week while cutting some bamboo. I remember showing my knife to a friend when I was around 7 or 8 and he promptly cut the hell out of himself because he'd never had any past experience or been taught how to handle a knife. I've probably cut myself more as an adult than I did as a kid.

Looking at my nephews who are around the same age, I doubt that I would give one of them a knife at that age. I think 8 sounds about right, but it all depends on the maturity level and proper training.

Hasn't anyone taught you that a dull blade is much more dangerous then a sharp one? I say if their old enough to use one, their old enuf to own one.

I say that you give him a camping knife with all the accessories in it, like a swiss army for example and see how responsible he is with that.
