I was 8 years old when I inherited my grandfather's old Camillus slipjoint knife. Two years later and after a brief 'safety' talk from my father, he gave me a brand new Buck 110!
Still have that 110 all these ~30 years later...
I got my first knife when I earned the money to buy it. I was six or seven at the time. I promptly sharpened it shaving sharp ( I'd been sharpening all the knives in the house since I was five or so). I gave my kids their first knives when they were 6-8 years old depending on maturity. Before I received my frist knife I had worked with blades a fair amount and was well aware of proper and safe use. I made sure of the same before giving knives to any of the kids.
