Aggressive dogs outdoors

Today I pulled up to a natural area just out of town and went for a quiet walk. As I was walking a big assed jacked up truck pulls in. No biggie, people come here all the time to walk their dogs. A few minutes later I suddenly hear barking right on my butt which scared the hell out of me and I yelled Jeezuz! as I turned around. All around me were at least five dogs barking, circling, running here and there, Mostly medium sized boxers, or some type of boxer\pit cross. One dog in particular was really getting aggressive. I saw the owner about 50 yards behind me and I yelled angrily to him '' if this dog bites me he's gonna get it !!'' Sounds cheesy now but I was pissed, alarmed, and more pissed that this jack ass was doing nothing about his dog ''pack''. The guy said nothing but yelled a dog off. Weirdly enough he had another dog on a leash ! I went off to the side into the bush and took a wiz. I turn around and one of the damn dogs is right there again ! And once again it starts into the growling\barking etc. I found myself a nice dead tree club and threatened the dog with a beating. It moved away and they all disappeared. Meanwhile the owner is nowhere to be seen. I kept the club with me and watched my back as I walked to my car. Interestingly, as I came to the entrance road of the place I dropped my club and found one almost identical laying near by. Has this happened here before?, with the same idiot ?. Thoughts flashed through my mind on first encounter with the dog pack. Pull out my necker ? Not unless I was being bitten. Take the guys plate and make a police complaint ? That 's a P.I.T.A. Get pepper spray for a possible future event ? Not definitive enough for me. I have now come to the conclusion that I'll cut myself a stout walking stick and skull crack if need be. If idiot can't care for his dogs or socialize them it will not be on my conscience if I whack the s**t out of them. I simply went for a quiet walk in the country and these dogs came within a hair of chewing on me. I always had a concern about black bears in the back of my mind in the Boreal, not dogs in the country. This was a strange and surprising twist for me.

There should be a law that prevents fools from owning a dog-especially one that is large enough to hurt someone.

I think you did all that could have been done-legally that is.

He will never learn until he is sued after one of his uncontrolled dogs bites someone

something similar happened to me while mountain biking last year. i used my bike as a shield with my back against torn bushes, haha. good idea to carry a walking stick full time imho - it can serve as a crutch too in case you roll your ankle.

Thats a bummer, I've had plenty of dogs run up and circle me, barking and what not in the past but none have ever showed teeth or bit at me or anything.

Some dog owners are clueless and let untrained socialized dogs free range...it's an accident waiting to happen and it's not fair to put the dogs in such a position.

I own two big black dogs that weigh in right around 90 lbs each, so not too many run up on us anymore when we're walking.

You know, I love dogs, have owned plenty but inconsiderate people not controlling their dogs is becoming a real problem on trails. I see many off leash dogs on trails - 95% are well behaved and no problem. 3% off leash insist on trying to stick their nose in peoples crotch- no worries, easy to fix that with a baseball cap. The other 2% seem to think you are invading their turf and want to run you off the trail.

I have never seen a wolf in the wild- not the right area. I have never been directly threatened by a coyote- just livestock. I HAVE been treed and cornered by "dogs gone wild" and seen livestock being mauled by dogs- put a few of those down. Dogs do not generally have the natural fear of man that wolves and coyotes do- we have bred it out of them. Lacking that places greater responsibility on their owners.

I never support banning types of dogs, I DO support licensing dogs by county and feel like for some breeds, owners should be minimum 21yr old and attend "some" sort knowledge class. We have minimum ages and knowledge requirements for owner firearms,CCW, drivers license, drinking alcohol, buying cigarettes. One persons irresponsibility should not endanger or inconvenience others.... OK I am dreaming here :) LOL!

I would be for that. A large breed dog in the wrong hands is just as dangerous as a gun or car IMO. And a lot of people that are into those breeds have them specifically for the purpose of using their dogs as weapons.

Probably correlates pretty well with human drivers on a road.

Regarding licensing or breed specific regulations/legislation- just like their are drivers on the road without insurance, there will always be owners without licenses.

...before Pits it was Rotts after it was Dobies after it was German Shepherds - the only constants are the humans.

Yes I agree that 95% of dogs are fine. I guess that this was why I was so startled\surprised at the behavior. The situation alternately scared and angered me. I didn't want to come off as Mr. Macho (as some of my posts do, unfortunately), as I am a dog lover also. If I have a repeat event from the same owner I WILL take the plate and go straight to the police.

True but by that logic laws shouldn't exist because people are just going to break them.

To be quiet honest dogs are really the only animal in these parts I'm afraid of. Well that and rabified raccoon or something.

Meet Thor. He's one of my two canine companions and we're out in the woods where we live a lot.

He's 110 lbs, 10 years old, and a German Shepherd - Norwegian Elkhound mix.

Yeah, half German Shepherd, one of those spooky scary dogs some people are afraid of and want banned.

He's never been aggressive with anyone. He's a big teddy bear.

But if he comes up to you and circles you, more than likely he's after your ham sammich.

I guess I was correlating it with gun rights: more or less saying that if your for restrictions on dogs/owners > since you compared them to guns or weapons it stands to reason your pro gun/weapon regulation.

Which I believe you are.

Also re-iterating that dumbass dog owners have dangerous dogs not dangerous breeds.

I could have said it more clearly.

We have a small municipal park near me, clearly posted at all entrances, no dogs allowed. Time and again, I've come around a bend in the trail and an unleashed dog is bounding towards me. At least leash the dog! I'm crippled, I walk with a cane, a big happy friendly dog can knock me down just being playful.

I walk with a Canemasters oak crooktop. One of these days ... Bam! :(

The condition is known as "Dog Deaf" it is prevalent
amongst dog owners who are unable to hear their dogs barking or recognise
their own poor dog ownership skills.
Interestingly in severe cases they are unable to hear peolple usually neighbours complaining about the noise.

"No dogs allowed" Do you live in Jerzee or Communist Russia?

But yeah if a dog comes up and knocks you down or gets too close and threatens you...rap that sonofagun right on the noggin.

I'd rather rap the owner.

"Communist Russia" is not a joke.

We don't ban dogs here, but the park is a narrow trail with a strip of woods around a small lake. Dogs running free there are going to be trouble. Keeping them out is easier than arguing about leashing them later.

As far as I know I haven't run into anywhere where dogs are not allowed in MN. I have seen it in Chicago a few times on plaza's and what not, I am not quite sure how you enforce it unless it's private property.

I've never met a douche bag who owned a small breed dog. They always own large breeds with agressive reputations. Too bad douche bags have to exist as the problem would most likely disappear overnight.

Do you live in an area where you are not allowed to carry a firearm? I am the biggest dog advocate and work with 2 rescue organizations but when it comes to the safety of my family or me, I would not hesitate to stop a dog(2 legged or 4). And we all love blades but they become usess against a pack of dogs . We just last year had a guy mauled by a pack of dogs. It does happen. And I agree with folks here about stupid dog owners who let their dogs off the leash. They should be beaten instead of the dog. As far as your situation that's a tough one hopefully the police in your area could do something but that would of little comfort after you get mauled
