I am lucky enough to have a real knifeshop in my town (Stockholm, Sweden). I mean a real shop full of folders, fixed blades, cutlery and nothing else. It´s such a joy to go in and handle different type of Benchmades, Spydercos, Kershaws and other brands. It´s a small shop but it carrys thousands (ehhh... well at least hundreds) of differnet knives.

I don´t like to buy on line, there´s to many downsides... not be able to handle it before you buy, seldom in stock - long waiting, expensive shipping costs, the hassle, waiting and extra cost to send back a faulty one.

I gladly pay an extra 10-20 percent when buying from a real shop. It´s so nice to handle the different knives you choose between, beats YouTube-reviews by far! And if it´s faulty - just bring it back and get a new or your cash back.

Do you have access to a real knifeshop? If you do, you´ll know what I mean. Nothing beats a real shop even if I know it couldn´t be many left in this world.

I am very Lucky to live close to a great Knife store. I spend hours in there every weekend.

Some guys have all the luck! We have to pay MSRP with a stacked conversion rate and sometimes more, sight unseen, when we buy from our dealers. When we order online to save a little we risk losing to the item to customs(customs=thieves here).

Although I have been buying my knives only online for a decade now, I agree that handling a knife is vitally important before buying. The problem is, most of the shop owners around here know when someone goes in just to check out a knife and buy it later online. One owner I was friendly with complained about it a lot. He couldn't compete with online pricing, and sure enough he is no longer in business.

I would like to support local businesses, I just can't afford to at this point in my life. I have to find the best deals, and 99% of the time, they are online, whether its knives, books, sports gear, tools, electronics, etc. Just the way the world is going. It will only increase as time goes on.

Many of the brick and mortars nearby that have quality knives tend to ask twice as much or more than what I can find online. 10-20% more than online prices would be a great deal locally. Those stores, I would support. It's great living close to TAD Gear.

A big shout out to Sean at Edgeworks, he's a great guy. Great store in Frederick MD. Also, even though their prices are MSRP or higher, the staff at Country Knives (Dan Huegel?), are very knowledgeable and great people too. Lancaster PA. Going to check out Willey Knives in Greenwood DE, hopefully this weekend. My sisters boyfriend swears by this place.

I've gotten a lot of deals in the Exchange on here, and with face to face dealings with some members. Still, theres a type of awe when you walk into a knife shop.

My problem with a nice knifeshop is that I spend more money than I originally intended when I am able to hold and fondle the knives.

I recently had to drive through West Virginia on a business trip and took a detour by New Graham Knives in Bluefield. I went there looking for a ESEE HEST but they didn't have any in stock. So I browsed for a while and ended up leaving with a Zero Tolerance 0350 and a few other knives that were way more than I expected to spend.

I'm glad they are not closer to where I live.

the only thing around me other than chain retailers (i.e.- sports authority) which charge terrible prices and have an even worse selection- is a small fishing store. all they have though is fillet knives, diving knives (kershaw) and overpriced vics. i would love to see a good old "shoppe" open up.

Thank god for having a great local knife shop (Warriors and Wonders). Being able to handle the merchandise has saved me from buying two knives I thought kicked butt online but just weren't my cuppa (Emerson A100 and BM 755).

I wish there was a decent knife shop close to where i stay. I would love to get a feel for the blades before i buy them.

I can get to three decent knife shops, but they're all an hour to an hour and a half away. I know, it could be worse! I can't believe I only recently heard there's a big knife shop downtown L.A.- of course, I immediately forgot the name of it! Next time I hear it I'll go check that one out too.

If you only pay 10-20 percent extra then your lucky.

If i buy local i pay 100-120% extra.:thumbdn: (Also live in Europe)

So i would be very stupid not to buy from Usa because i can get 2 for the same price compared to the local shops.
So for me no support for local shops because they are very very overpriced.

Ok i'll take some risks and sometimes get some extra custom tax charges and if something is wrong with my knife i fix it myself or leave it like it is.
I don't send it back because that would take lots of time and money.

But if prices over here were lower i would buy local so i could try out the knife i like to buy.

What you said!

Stuff the Dutch Distributor!

More Dutchies speaking: don't buy locally. It inflates up to %150 percent here. There's actually a store that sells a CR sebenza for $850. Only if the shipping outweighs the price inflation I buy locally.
I bought an Opinel knife last week, which was $15. If I bought this one online it would've cost me at least $10 and then some more shipping, plus waiting. Didn't really mind it this time but I rarely buy expensive knives here.

I've seen two shops that sell a Micarta seb for €800, at the current rate = $1,015.54

The only knife I've bought from a B&M is a Rapala fillet knife... Singapore is blessed with many tackle stores and I get good prices on Shimano, Daiwas and ABUs but where knives are concerned we have only one store and they charge more than MSRP for their blades and there's no way I can pay that kind of money. One of their employees even admitted that they charge way too much for their knives, they don't know much about knives and that blades was not very high on their priority list. Singapore customs and postal service (SingPost) however are very efficient and I've never lost a package with them. Theft or any form of corruption is generally dealt with severely here and jail time for such misdeeds is the norm.

Nothing beats going to a shop and having a look around, granted we also pay extreme amount extra.

One day when I have enough cash flow I will import a knife, but as it currently is, I do not own a credit card, paypal or such sort. If cash allows it I will import a knife because then I can deal with customs etc. Currently it is not worth the risk to me dealing with customs etc.

I also like to support our local knife makers. Their prices are reasonable for me and you get to build a relationship.

We used to have some dedicated knife shops here around st.louis mo. But they are pretty much gone now. I guess because of the sheeple. But if i drive about 30 miles into Ill. GP.Knives has a real nice shop with a big assortment/stock.

I would, except knives in Holland are usually at least double what they cost on Ebay or US-based Internet shops. I dread to think what it will be like now that the Euro is losing value against the dollar...
