Ahoy, captain?

I like it veeeery much

Now if Sal puts serrations on it this time (they will work great with that curve:thumbup: :D ), this might become THE KNIFE for me;)

Very utilitarian, I like it even though per-se it's quite ugly.
It would probably make a good work horse for (I work on ships, where most knives end up being used as expensive scrapers)
Fausto

It looks like a cross between the Adventura and Dodo. It also looks like it could have had a wave but the wave got chopped off.

I like it:D I was going to grind a Dodo's nose into a back slash tanto for scraping/cutting but the handle won't cover the new cutting edge so I had to scratch my plan. This forward cutter/scraper on the Cap'n might work the way I wanted. If not, I can grind it into a back/slash tanto:D I am going to buy one!:)

The way the blade looks, I'd want to do rough things with that knife. The kind of things that I'd be scared to do with a liner lock.

It looks uglier than my dog's 11 1/2 year old sack. I am sure it will do great for the purpose it was made for as staded by Kristi at Spyderco. I like it.

I got to handle one on the Amsterdam show and fell in love with it immediately. It felt like the knife was made for me.;) ;) :D :D

Now if Sal puts serrations on the curve, this will be THE knife for me

I think the blade shape would be fine, but on a fixed blade.
Cant get the idea why to have such a folder. Not my cup of tea :p

I saw and handled the Captain at the recient Leeds show.

Now my overriding preference is for simple uncomplicated lines, the Calypso's and UKPK being ideal examples of my preference. When I got handed the Captain I thought "I really shouldn't like you ..... but I do" ;) All day whenever I thought about it I was convinced I must have been wrong ... but every time I went back and picked it up, I decided I DID like it :)

It's odd, but the Captain appears to be much better in the hand, than it does in pictures.

i know i shouldn't judge a Spydie by appearance alone, after all, i *do* own two Dodos... but the Captain is the *first* Spydie that has made me reconsider my position that *no* Spyderco is ugly, and you're talkin' to a guy that *never* saw the Dodo as "ugly"....

unusual, yes, specialized, yes, unique, definitely, but never *ugly*

the Captain, OTOH....

looking at the pic again, i'd describe the blade profile as a HawTo (Hawkbill-Tanto hybrid), yes, i can see serrations working very well on that blade, maybe make it a combo edge, the curved belly of the blade serrated, the tanto-esque tip plain edge....

looks like a major pain in the arse to sharpen though, even on a Sharpmaker.....

Hi, I'm new here (JaM on the Spyderco forums, and on some others). I too handled that "beast", in Amsterdam. It may look ugly, but I think it's a hell of a knife. I am liking it more and more, not the looks but the "feel" of it...
I am trying to find some use for this in my life (dont seem to have it now), but man... I guess anything you throw at that it will handle perfectly.
It is indeed one serious beater-knife. Looks can be decieving you know ;) .

Cheers, JaM

let me introduce myself..... I'm the designer
thanks for all the compliments and the constructive criticism
I too hope for a version with serrations, seems like most have tagged it right.... UGLY, maybe just ugly enough to have some appeal, I did design it to be a work-horse, the lock was left up to the wonderful people at Spyderco. It's what I wanted for an outdoor knife (I make my home in the beautiful Appalachian Mts). I also love the water (hence the CAPTAIN). I wanted a glove-fit handle; Give this ugly duckling a chance in your hand!
When I played with the prototypes there's no doubt it's what I wanted for EVERYDAY carry

I'll buy one- I like the design. The world is too full of "pretty" things that don't work. What are the dimensions?
