Air cleaners- Allergies, reactions, dust

Mahoney, thanks for all that. I did end up buying the wen unit because it was affordable and I could get right back to work, figured it would only help.

I hate to ask ya'll to watch the entire 7 minutes, but if you have time, take a look at what I did to my air.
I just had to move for a little while to a new shop that I had to build and did something to my air filtration.
I show one part of it at the very beginning, and then the other part of it near the end.
All I can say is that it's effectiveness far exceeds my expectations.

Karl, thanks for the video. What kind of fan do you use to move the air in your filtration system?

The "pie in the sky" filter will soon be jammed with dust. A dust deputy made of metal below your table or wheel will do a very good job for you. I installed one with a large ridged vacuum. This will pick up the fine dust AT the grinder rather than try and catch it in the air. Now quite possibly if you installed the air collection system as well this there would even a better collection system but stopping the almost all the dust at the machine is what the answer is. There have been some very good systems based on that right here on the forums. Perhaps another search will help find them.

I have one, mounted high up above the grinder area.
I also have a dust collector.

there's still a blanket of dust everywhere in the garage.
I can't speak to whether it can be beneficial to you or not,
But I found in the summertime, it moves the air so much that it totally cools the work space almost A/C like

A 3m mask takes care of most problems for u imo

i have been rethinkning my dust management it will include a non metal only grinder with collection but i also really need a fine air collector in the clean ish room and the upstairs

It's a whole house furnace squirrel cage fan. Got it at the recycle center for 20 bucks.

KArl, just got a chance to watch your vid, thanks for posting. Though it's not practical for me currently I will most likely try to incorporate something to taht effect when/ if I relocate.

I took the multi-layer approach.

- Dust collection at the grinder via a Craftex 900CFM attached to a shroud that fits around the grinder. It is vented outside... which requires an outside air inlet in the shroud to create a semi-closed loop that prevents the shop from getting cold in the winter.
- There is additional duct work attached to the Craftex that allows me to hook up a movable filter with an adjustable stand. Great for multi-zone temporary setups.
- I have a Dust Deputy cyclone collector hooked up to a 5hp shop vac that filters my bench sanders, buffers and wire wheel. The same shop vac has additional hosing for general shop clean up. The vac has an optional outside air vent hose option.
- A standard 22" box fan with household filters fitted to both sides. It hangs from the ceiling.
- A 200CFM bathroom exhaust fan is above my forge area. It isn't big enough to efficiently do the room but it flushes out any smoke that hangs at the ceiling.
- A "PURGE" blower at one end of the room made from a 2200CFM furnace blower. This is my "clear the room, NOW" option. It'll slam doors and make your ears pop.

On top of that I have full and halfface respirators, along with my Resp-O-Rator mouthpiece type personal filter.

Karl... I think your system does a great job of purging and isolating your grinding room from the rest of the shop but I have a couple questions.

1. How often are you back and forth from your grinders to the finish room? In my own shop, I find I am constantly grinding-fitting, buffing-cleaning, sanding, measuring, and so on... I would wear my shoes out in your shop. You may(and probably do) work differently than I do... so take that criticism with a grain of salt.

2. How are you controlling the dust contamination at a personal level? You are essentially working in a wind tunnel, which means that dust is being kicked up around the room(by the machines) and driven past you. I have seen you promote the Resp-O-Rator, before(which I use as well) but what about your eyes, ears, clothes, hair and glorious mustache? All that fine dust gets into everything including pores, tear ducts and whatnot. Even after you are out of the grinding room, you are basically a walking dirty filter. Every time you wipe your nose with your sleeve, sip your coffee through that cookie-duster or... well, you get the idea.

I am totally lost with your questioning.
Dust is not swirling around me like in a wind tunnel. It only goes one direction. It goes from where I am working to the export hole, gets filtered and I never see it again.
I'm clean. No dirt in my nose or on my person. I never feel like I've inhaled anything or that there's any particles on me or in me.
I can blow myself with the air hose and there's nothing on me - I've tried it.
I'm guessing it works far better than you give it credit for.

No doubt you and I have a very different work flow.
In front of my grinders is where I spend the least time of all. The only grinding ever done on my handles is maybe 2 minutes with a 2" wheel and a 36 grit belt to knock the corners off. Which really only creates CHUNKS of handle material - not dust. I shape the remainder with files in a vise.

The item that creates the most dust is the surface grinder and it's right in front of the incoming air.

That room is one of the smartest things I've ever done.

Good stuff, Karl. Thanks for "collecting" your thoughts and "clearing the air"...... bwa-ha-ha... I kill me.

Are you serious?

I don't think Karl found that offensive... I HOPE NOT! I would feel awful. By the sounds of it, he just didn't agree with my position. I thought I had legit questions... still do. I spend a lot of time at the grinder, inefficiently going back and forth to the bench... lol. That is why I said to take that particular criticism with a grain of salt. Karl is da man... he knows how much I respect him... I tell him all the time!

I have worked with my dust system for a long time... with residential and commercial blowers. I don't think the air streams in a straight line through the room gathering dust as it leaves the steel.... but ultimately Karl would be the expert on HIS room. It would be interesting to see how white smoke behaves... just to see the air currents(with the machines running). I have never dealt with a room that small.... WHICH IS WHY I ASKED.

I like to joke around but perhaps it came off too sarcastically. I never meant to imply that Karl walks out of the room covered in dust like a coal miner.

If Karl was offended... I humbly apologize.... but sheesh... "... SOMEBODY should kill you." seems a bit over the top.

Lol! Sorry guys!! I didn't meant to cause a meltdown in here, just trying to give rick a hard time about a bad joke... guess it was taken the wrong way. I apologize profusely and I'll endeavor to keep it more civil from here on out. Rick, your jokes are bad, and I enjoy them in all their badness!
