Airguns for survival use

I feel comfortable taking small birds and squirrels with an airgun,and not much else. Even raccoon sized game is out of the question, and the 'effective field range' is probably about 35 yards maximum.

A .22 is a much better choice if legal where you live. It can easily take all small game, and even medium game such as deer are doable. If you want portable, a 5" .22 handgun with a red dot scope and iron sights for backup is a great choice. Silencers can also be purchased or made (legally) in the US. With a silencer a .22 is quieter then an airgun.

The new breed of air rifle is serious Bada$$.

My Crosman Nitro .22 is pushing heavy lead pellets at almost 800FPS and has 19 ft lbs of energy at muzzle. And there are many guns out there WAY more powerful.

Raccoons are no problem.
Turkeys fall with a head shot at 40 yards.
Groundhogs are TOAST at well over 50 yards.

I can put 5 shots in a quarter sized hole at 25 yards no problem. Could probably do a dime sized hole if the wind was low.

While I agree a .22 LR is a BETTER dispatcher, the poster should not hesitate taking a bandit with an airgun.
