Airliner crash: what to have on you

Regarding the shoes, I find it ironic that the new security requirement of making people remove their shoes while going through the metal detectors has caused a lot of people to start wearing sandals or other slip-ons while flying. This is a very dangerous practice as the slip-ons will certainly become fly-offs during the crash and you will then have to de-plane barefoot into a debris field of jagged metal and flaming materials. You should always wear tie-on shoes when flying.

Remember when people used to dress in their Sunday best to fly, or go out to dinner?

Men would wear dress suits (suit jackets, white shirts, ties) and women would wear dresses and heels.

Now the teaming throngs wear torn jeans, T-shirts, and flip-flops.

That's just plain wrong. :grumpy:

See, all this is why I never fly - it is much easier to drive and much less dangerous - you never hear of anyone being hurt in a car. :D

Gollnick's first rule of travel: Never be separated from your shaving kit. Gollnick's second rule: wear cloths that are comfortable and durable AND that you wouldn't mind being seen in tomorrow. If you're arriving on Monday night and have formal business meetings first thing in the morning on Tuesday, then you're gonna travel in a suit and at least have your tie in your carry-on. This way, if your checked baggage gets delayed, you'll at least be able to pull yourself together for your meeting on Tuesday morning. Now, of course, if you can travel with a carry-on garment bag and have your suit in there, well that's better. But you get the idea: have cloths with you to wear the next day.[/QUOTE]

You said a mouth full there brother. I learned this the hard way on a business trip to the Caribbean last year. The airline folks promised me that they wouldn't lose my luggage, but when I got off the plane in Barbados, my bags were at some other island. I had a business meeting that night so I had to do a mad dash around the island to pick up some decent business clothes. One thing I learned, Keen Bronx shoes are somewhat passable with a pair of black slacks and dress shirt and tie. I hate to drag a bunch of stuff as carry-on, but when your job depends on it, you do what you gotta do.

I had to buy a suit late one evening in Cincinnati, Ohio. The criteria was NOT what looks good or what I wanted, but which one fit without alterations.

but when I got off the plane in Barbados
You had to wear a suit? In Barbados?

Who schedules a meeting in Barbados, and then makes you wear a suit? That's just not right.

Of course, you may have been meeting with the locals, in which case I can see the need. Although I can't imagine that many residents of Barbados own suits.

I thought every gentlemen in Barbados wore a white linen suit with a broad-brimmed straw hat...

and carried a rum drink with fruit and a paper umbrella in it. :D

Yep, my company does a lot of business in the Caribbean. I like Trinidad the best, Jamaica and Barbados the least. We sell our products through local distributors, so being the company guy, I gotta look the part. Wearing a suit there isn't a big deal. WHat really sucks is going to all of these great vacation places and staying there for less than 24 hours. I can sometimes get an hour to myself, but that's about it. I've been to a lot of places that I've never actually seen.

You would be amazed at the selection of clothing in all of the small Carib Islands, it's better than you think. Where I was most blown away was in part of Nairobi, Kenya where there was a tailor with a nice selection of Hugo Boss, and they weren't fakes.

When the company sends you there on a monday or a friday, just take a day off on the other side (if they send you for meetings on monday, take the preceeding friday as vacation). You'll pay the extra two days of hotel and the wife's airfare, of course. Most companies are happy to do this because it actually (in most cases) lowers the air fare if you stay over a weekend.

Yeah, I've done that a few times, but most of the time I do these whirlwind tours, when I'm done, I just want to go home. Next time I go to Europe, however, I'll drag the family along with me.

it's better to have good shoes, but when you are taking long distance plane, most people try to sleep and remove the shoes...
And after some hours in plane, your foot are getting bigger due to low (or high?) pressure on board and it's difficult to put back the shoes... when you have time to do it!
So in emergency situation, i guess almost evrybody will run barefoot ! (or at least, so will I ) :D

Nope! I can snooze just fine with my footwear on, expecially on a plane where you could suddenly be confronted with a survival situation.

Same here with the shoes situation. Most of the time i take 'em off. I can't wear 'em for the whole 13 hour flight. So if something happens most probably i'll be without my shoes.

I'm comfortable with the idea that I'll either stroll down the jet walk at my destination or die in an inferno of a crash.... which would simply mean I'll stroll down the jet walk at my ultimate destination. Either outcome is fine with me. That's the way flying works.

Chuck, you've summed things up much better than I could.

As for the EVAC-U8 emergency escape smoke hood, I say carry a large trash bag to put over your head. It will shrink wrap your head just as well in the heat at a fraction of the cost. Seriously, the problem with this stupid invention is that it filters particulate out of the air, but it does nothing to address the fact that the oxygen level will be well below that required to maintain conciousness.

You forgot your Aliens are destroying the planet to make way for a super highway checklist.

Hint: bring a towel. :D

Good list! The flash light is a must, the only thing I would add would be some trauma Dessings, Just in case you or a loved one gets hurt. I also carry a change of under wear and socks and a Hygene Kit in case I get stuck over night some where.

Small LED flashlight, change of shirt, and work slacks on (we wear polos thankfully), pack of matches, and a bic in the laptop bag(if they didn't grab it)
the biggest reason the no-knife rule bugs me is this type of situation, but checked luggage is fine for folders. And also in the bottom of my laptop case......yep a towel
