Airliner crash: what to have on you

As for the EVAC-U8 emergency escape smoke hood, I say carry a large trash bag to put over your head. It will shrink wrap your head just as well in the heat at a fraction of the cost. Seriously, the problem with this stupid invention is that it filters particulate out of the air, but it does nothing to address the fact that the oxygen level will be well below that required to maintain conciousness.

1) The EVAC-U8 hood "plastic" is made of Kapton which won't melt on your face where the garbage bag would.

2) Actually, the EVAC-U8 hood has a catalyst to convert the carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. Not as good as fresh air, but it does more than you suggest.

EVAC-U8

Note, they also have a newer product called the EVAC+ which is easier to breath through, is lighter, and is more shock resistaint.

When I travel, break things down into two catagories.

One is increasing odds in case of a crash. As others have suggested, this mostly means escape and nothing else. In support of this catagory, I:

1) Avoid synthetic clothes due to increased burn risk.
2) Wear my hiking boots, in this case Vasque Sundowners. Lightweight, but they have a full shank and overall protection. It isn't that I figure I'm going to have to hike out of somewhere, but that I think it would be helpful to protect your feet and provide improved traction while you are trying to scramble out of the plane.
3) I carry a Surefire E2e with fresh batteries on my person to help escape in the case of dark and/or smoke.

While I haven't done this, I think a good approach for protection would be sheepskin or wool lined, leather vest. Protection against cuts and burns w/o looking "odd".

If you were more serious about it, you could wear Kevlar underwear (seriously) like this Kevlar Tee-shirt. It appears that Kevlar is very fire resistaint (after some reading, it sounds much better than Nomex) and is also cut resistaint.

The other catagory is more general travel oriented. The way I think about it is to assume you could be stuck at some random place for 1-2 days without warning. Imagine being trapped in the airport due to a snowstorm, with all the hotels full because everyone else is in the same boat.

As such, I carry a small backpack with various stuff that would make life more comfortable such as a small FAK, small FM radio, wet-wipes & glasses cleaners, small "pack" towel, warm clothes, mapping GPS, toothbrush & bit of toothpaste, etc.

You forgot your Aliens are destroying the planet to make way for a super highway checklist.

Darn it Gollnick, you beat me to it. Every intelligent traveler should know where his towel is.

FWIW, I came across the following fire resistaint clothing that doesn't look too odd:

True North Dragon Fur Fleece Vest

Crew Boss Advance Pants

Also, I recently was called up for jury duty, and the security folks at the building didn't allow me to enter with my EvacU8 hood in my bag... they held it at the security checkpoint. The person manning the x-ray told the other person to check the "aerosol can". The guy doing the hand search obviously didn't know what it was and wasn't going to chance it.

The reason I bring this up is that even tho you *should* be able to take the hood through security -- you may not be able to.

You should have explained what it was. I had to explain to an over-zealous (is there any other kind?) security guard what my space pen was by writing with it. He didn't know what it was by looking at it, and therefore assumed it to be a weapon. When he asked me, "What's this?" I almost burst out laughing. That would have been bad, considered he outweighed me (everyone does) and was armed.

GAWWWWDDD! I can't believe nobody has listed the OBVIOUS.... a case of sterno, several lightweight pots and pans, a good butcher knife, dishes, and obviously a titanium spork.

(anybody see the movie "Alive"?) :D
