AK-47 vs. AR-15

a ruger m ini 30 LOL? if a AKM is junk, a mini 30 is "junkier".

i'm no big fan of the ruger mini series of rifles (yes i have one) the accesories are expensive, no one that i know of makes decent hicaps for a mini 30 at any price, but most telling imho is while the AKM is the most widely used combat rifle in the world, adapted by only god knows how many countries armed forces, while the mini has been adapted by exactly "zero" countries armed forces.
Most likely because of the price difference
Sheet metal is cheap
And so is Russian labor compared to the union wage of a Newport, NH worker

I don't own a Mini-30
I don't really like 7.62 rounds
Just my opinion
I agree on the good Ruger clips
I got a few factory ones back in the 90's that are still holding strong
The 8.99 Butler Creek clips I have for my 10/22 are now like 30 bucks if you can find them here in Cali
I don't even think I could own an AK anyways
Protruding stock and ability to accept hi cap mags

I have several friends who have AK's
Half of them get all bent out of shape when I call their AK's sheet metal junk
The others say "yeah..but it was only 129.99 bucks!!"
I just think they have poor fit and finish as you knife lovers like to say

I'm envious of all you guys. The only rifles I have are bolt-action hunting rifles & a 30-30 lever- action, but on a side note..they are dead on accurate.
I collect 100+yr old Mausers(German,Turk & Chilean) & mostly use the lever-action or a Remington 700 chambered for the 7x57 (aka7mm) for hunting.

I'm a firm believer in "one shot one kill" (well, very rarely it takes two) in the theory of hunting.Going full auto is a bit of "overkill" to me,but I gotta admit,They must be fun to shoot.

Well, here's my 2 cents worth....

I've owned and shot both extensively, and I'll take the AR-15 every time.

The maintenance/dirty factor is way overstated....
I carried mine (M16A2) for seven months during the Gulf War and only cleaned it once a day (which was still more often than it needed cleaning) and it never failed to fire.
It's very easy to clean and it only takes about seven minutes if you take your time, and only about five minutes if you're in a hurry.

Sorry for stating the obvious, but the A2 was the upgrade from the A1 after all the complaints of M16's jamming in Vietnam. If given the choice I'd opt for the A2 over the AK-47,but I hear the AK-74 corrected similiar problems also.

Thanks for your input & Thank You for your service soldier:)

And thank you for your tax-money....I used the GI Bill to go back to school when I became a civilian again. :)

And a big thanks to Drill Sgt. Perez, who threatened to kill me if I didn't sign up for the GI Bill.

I carried the M-16 for ten years. I don't own one now. I have 3 AK's, a Sig 556, and a DSA FAL. All gas piston, all the time.

The problem in Viet Nam was not in gun design but rather in the ammo and maintenance instructions. First despite the warnings of experts in munitions the ammo used a powder that was know to be dirty and tough on gas systems, second the soldiers were told the guns didn't need lubrication. The original M-16 runs fine when treated like the newer rifles are treated today.

price difference? then how come so many countries adopt H&K G3's, M16's, FN-FAL's, all of which cost more than mini's?? because the mini is a light duty rifle not suitable for combat use, thats why.

where do i line up to get an AK for $129? have ya confused an AK and a SKS maybe.....?

in what way are ya qualified to even have an opinion on AK's vs mini's if ya dont own either one, ya lost me on that one lol?

Thanks,I didn't know that.Weren't there also problems because the M-16A1 wasn't really built to function well in the hot/humid/wet/muddy jungle conditions?Didn't they add a stainless barrel in the A2?
I think they even made a comic book type manual, teaching you how to maintian your M-16...forgot what it was called.

This was mentioned in the Military Channel's Top Ten Assault Rifle list....which the AK-47 won BTW.

:thumbup:Those are really nice, but I'd have little need (but not that I wouldn't want one) of any of them, since I primarily just hunt deer & occasionally rabbit.I'd love to take them target shooting though.
I'm happy with the simplicity of my bolt & lever action rifles.Dead on accurate & never jammed once.

have ya had good luck with the FAL? i have been wanting to get one of those for a while now, i have never even fired one though lol.

been considering either a folding stock FAL or a springfield armory M1A scout rifle, wanna get a short handy .308.

It's a fantastic weapon. Basically a beefed ergonomic AK. I picked up, oddly enough through knife connections, a great deal from DSA. It has the match trigger, 18" medium contour barrel, and scope mount.

I had a Springfield Scout before and prefer the FAL over that and the HK91. It's a bit heavy, but you discover that's a plus if you're shooting 308 for a period of time. The recoil is stout into your cheek. It's basically a DMR for me anyway. A 4-600 yard gun.

If I had to choose one it would be the Krebs AK.

I have 2 mini 14's
185 series and 187 series Ranch version
I have shot maybe 20 AK-s in my life

  • n 1983, The Bermuda Regiment replaced its British-made L1A1 Self-Loading Rifles (SLRs) in 7.62x51mm NATO with the wooden-stocked Mini-14 20GB, a semi-automatic variant.
  • The AC-556 was supplied to the Royal Ulster Constabulary in 1979 as a weapon for its Special Patrol Groups, Special Operations (E Services) and exposed border police stations and units. These rifles are selective-fire with single shot and three-round burst options. The AC-556 was a replacement for the Sterling submachine gun and M1 carbine. The switch brought improved penetration and range. It was also lighter than the FN L1A1 rifles then used by the British Army.
  • Mini-14 variants including the AC-556F were used for three decades by units of the Police Department of the City of New York, most notably by the Emergency Service Unit, prior to adoption of the M4 Carbine. Other units, such as Aviation, Scuba, City Hall Detail (Uniform Intelligence Division), and the Special Operations Division received training on the Mini-14

As far as the AK's being able to be dragged through 100 yards of mud and dropped from a helicopter
I don't usually treat my weapons that way
I almost stared crying when some guy here on BF took a picture of his pistol laying on the CEMENT......

ok then, other than the "bermuda regiment" (whatever that is) no army ever adapted the mini.

now lets make a list of folks who use the AK ...........

*russia, china, north korea, vietnam, romanmia, bulgaria, egypt, mozambique (IIRC there flag has the AK in it) , angola, liberia, somalia, east germany, just about any terrorist group ya care to name, i could go on and on and on but i bet ya get the pic,

to compare the min and an AK, for combat use, and to argue the mini is the superior weapon, or is even suitable for combat use, is absurd, its just not, its a hunting/varmint rifle, i'll buy that, but its not robust enough for combat use.

in todays world there are 2 rifles whcih rule the roost as far as being combat proven rifles, the AR15 and the AK, imho all the others are "also rans" at best, the mini isnt even imho an also ran.

i have 2 had 2 minis, a 181 series and a mini 30(i sold that a few yrs ago), and an AK or 2 also, and i will assure you if i was in a combat scenario it would not be hard to choose between the 2 designs.

It was far better for the hot humid wet muddy jungles than the M-14; with its wood stocks, heavier ammo and very large length sucked to lug around the jungle. Now for holding a chopper base; an M-14 would be real nice since there was a field of fire set up. Again, with proper training, lube, and cleaning equipment, the M-16 platform works just fine. We wouldn't have kept it for 40 years, in all the conflicts that we have had, if that was not the case.
