AK Bowie info wanted (new to HI knives)

Won't ever see one again unless we make a special run (don't get any funny ideas or hopes up).

IIRC, when it came out, some didn't like the rounded handle and hollow-ground bevel. So, it went back to the old style - beveled handle + convex edge.

They both have double fullers.

If only we could get them to do the best of both on the same knife....

bamboo.....psst.....don't tell, but it's all glued up and will be finished this weekend. :D

Follow-up pics as promised!

Now you've let the cat out of the bag!

not gonna happen guys......If I remember correctly, I think only 3 or so were made.

Ferrous has one and etched it and there's no way he'd sell it.

(as usual, I may be wrong)

OH geez, only 3 were made? I didn't know that (being new here and all :) )

Maybe I will get a Chiruwa Ang Khola instead, just noticed that one awhile ago. (If you can break it we'll send you two free. --I like that!)

Still poking around the Himalayan Imports store. Neat stuff.

don't get me wrong - the regular AK Bowie is very much in-stock.

Just the rounded-handle one is rare.

It's still a great buy!
(sometimes shows up for $75 in Daily Deals)

let me make sure I am understanding correctly. The blade on the new and old look very different to me. Unless it's just me, or the way the pic was taken, or maybe it's the lighting. On closer inspection, I guess they do look similar. I think it's the way the pic was taken.

Are you saying the basic difference is the handle?

Now you just mentioned something called "Daily Deals" for $75. Are these deals posted in the classified section?

Thanks for your help and patience.

Nope, right here on the forum.

Read the HI forum thread topics. They pop up sometimes frequently, sometimes not so frequently, depending on Uncle Bills and Yangdus health and shipments from Nepal.

Gotta be faster than the sharks. READ how to order sticky at top of page and be faster than a speeding bullet. Call it the HI Forum shark infested feeding frenzy.

Hm. I just don't like the way the AK Bowie looks.

My Cherokee Rose, on the other hand, is both large and lethal, awful power and grace. Admittedly, it is more a fighter than the AKB...but hey! I have kuks for my heavy cutting. ;)

Welcome too the Cantina/Psycho Ward Gary.:D

I'm thinking the AK Bowie no longer has the rounded handle Nor the beautiful double fullered blade. I'm pretty sure there is only the small fuller at the top of the blade now.:grumpy: :(

The UBBB's and/or the UBDOTD's are listed right here on the forum.
Look back a few days for thread titles such as "Yangdu's Specials for 3-10-05, Great deals & Special prices, you'll see.;)

Yup...just the single small fuller at the top...:(

.

The double fullered and rounded handle Cobalt designed HI bird and trout knives were a full 1/2" spine. Prettier blade, prettier handle. I sanded the handle of mine down to fit my smaller hands. And yes, I sanded down the steel also.

The later ones come with 3/8th" spine and an octagonal handle. The blade might not be as pretty, but you can sand down the handles like I did.

Like I said - both have double fullers.

I have one in my hand. It is double fullered. The difference is that the fullers are not as deep as the "glamour" AK Bowie pictured on the H.I. Store. (notice that the drop point is also stronger on the latter - adds to the allure)

When we set up the store, I asked Uncle if we should swap the picture - he said he would take a pic (rather than me take a pic - for consistency's sake) - but health problems got in the way, and we dropped it. Maybe it's time to revisit that idea. I don't know.

Every AK Bowie I've handled has been top notch and worth every penny paid for it.

By the way, this bowie's spine is 3/8" thick. Sounds like the deep fullered bowie was thicker. (the other's I've had were all 3/8" too).

Here are some better pics:

You can see the fullers best in the second pic.

Gary007 - an HI bowie was my second HI purchase, made at the same time as my first one. (16.5" ang khola.) I'd been expecting a large knife but hadn't been prepared for just how large it was. The pictures I'd seen didn't really give a good sense of size. Here are some that may. Take a gander at this:

pic1.jpg

Pictured: well used (and abused) Glock field knife, Cold Steel Oyabun tanto (nice knife once one gives it a proper edge) and a big 'ole honkin' HI bowie.

Here's a shot from above showing their spine thicknesses:

That's not an illusion. It really is that thick.

Think extremely heavy duty meat cleaver with a point ground on, and don't forget the differential tempering - if you can get over the size and weight, there is no comparison in strength or edge holding to the other two, let alone craftsmanship.

Also note the epoxy-soaked paracord on the handle...I'm enough of a gorilla (in both size and mentality) that I found the handle too small. This was required to build it up to my specs. The handle is horn and was not round.

I bought mine at the full price as listed on the website. I consider it a bargain.

Dan - mine does have a second fuller as well, although it's easier felt than seen.

Yes - well said.

I see what you are talking about but never even considered it a fuller...just more of a grind shape.
