That is my grail knife right there.

If there is enough of the cross cut visible on the end of the handle you can tell if it is mammoth or mastodon by the schreger lines. Otherwise, it is only known definitively if the molars were found with the tusks. Mammoth and mastodon molars are very different. Or if it came from Siberia, it has to be mammoth because the only mastodons in Asia were long ago enough that the chance of finding tusks of that quality are virtually nil. Mastodon of that quality can only come from North America.

I haven't been lucky enough to get one on a drop, and now with my current financial status i have to pass anyway, but I still am on the email list.

Thanks, very educational post and information. The good side of the Forum. :) :) :)

OK, first, what same Ebay sellers? Of the few that are up or have been sold there's exactly ONE repeat seller. Most of those are the jacks that I sold over a year ago. Every other knife is from a different seller (I'm talking folders here). One seller has sold the same knife twice and has it up yet again. I don't know what's up with that nor do I want to know. Another knife that's up for sale I know for a fact was purchased by the seller from a previous owner for much less. How many others are being sold under similar circumstances with different previous owners? I very much doubt any of them were acquired through nefarious means by foreign agents. Another was sold for almost the same price it was purchased for so yes there are folks who might actually be selling a knife because it just isn't their thing.

No I have no idea how many people on that list are looking to score a knife to flip and neither do you but judging by the evidence there seem to be far fewer than you're implying.

The bottom line is the demand is great and I can't make the knives anywhere near fast enough to satisfy it, end of story. I try to be equally as fair as I can to everyone who's interested and needlessly worrying about non existent bots and the insidious underground are not worth time out of the shop.

Eric
As frustrating as this may seem to those who can't buy direct from ea42 ea42 , this only speaks volumes on the popularity of Eric's work!

I think ea42 ea42 is doing everything he can to be fair, while those who can't seem to get one (myself included, at least direct from Eric) feel that the system is rigged or unfair.

Hats off to you!

I also purchased one waynorth waynorth , and they were listed as mastodon. Of course I have convoluted the issue by photographing it on a book about mammoths.

I see the Schreger lines say "extinct", but I cannot tell Mastadon or Mammoth!!Schreger 1.jpgSchreger 2.jpg
We need someone more "expert" than us!!!

Eric

I have been specifically tracking the Lambsfoot knives. I have seen knives that are exactly what was released a few days before on your website. If I found one there for ~$300, I'd have been all over it.

And no, I'm not picking on honest people who sold their knife for whatever reason but, seeing the same sequence happen several times is frustrating to say the least. Further, the pictures on the knives in question didn't appear to be a "cut and paste" which is why I believed they were "real" and not some sort of fake.

Theo's razors occasionally are resold for various reasons as well but, they sell for basically his retail price without markups. I have no idea how many people are on his email distribution list or are in the queue to get a razor.

I have seen scenarios like this play out for ~30 years and I have seen "famous" fanboy knifemakers price themselves out of the market or lose their fan base and fall back into obscurity. I'm hoping you have great success and manage your production volume to keep your "fan base" as it is or grow it even more because you make a good product at a fair price! If I was number 1800 on your call-back list, I would be much happier than dealing with system lags that see my cart go to someone else before I can seal the deal. 😔

Best wishes for a bright and productive future!

Eric is a highly respected member of this community, not just some fanboy knifemaker (what does that even mean, btw?) - it's part of the reason why his knives are so popular here. For as long as he is willing and able to make knives and sell them, there will be a market here and he will have no trouble selling them. I'd say that is a pretty sweet spot to be in as a small batch knifemaker.

He doesn't overextend himself, doesn't set himself up to make any promises that can be problematic due to life, and he doesn't sell knives that don't exist. He makes knives, fantastic ones at that, and he sells them. It can't get much simpler than that.

It sucks to not get a knife on release - any of us tuned into this thread know that feeling well. Most of us though, take it in stride, and we not only celebrate one another's successes but Eric's as well.

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Here’s my collection, all acquired three different ways. First one was on a random drop, second one on the secondary market (reasonably priced) because I liked the first one so much, and the lamb on a scheduled drop. I’ve struck out several times but I kept trying and that’s just what it takes. Eventually it will pay off I promise, and it’s truly a wonderful feeling!

PS I’m ready for more clip points. 😁

Couldn’t agree more with you on this. Those posts seem to be someone angry that they aren’t getting a toy they want and needs someone to blame.

"Dan Fisher (University of Michigan) and his colleagues have quantified a significant species difference between mammoths and mastodons in these intersection angles. Fisher found that the Schreger pattern angles of Mastodons average about 124.7 degrees", and those of Mammoths average 87.1 degrees."

Thanks to thefossilforum.com !!!
If this is true, then mine must be Mammoth
because of the lines/angles which are acute!!! post-17588-0-17834700-1456954544_thumb.gif

They're all gorgeous, but that DIW with the knot whorl and the dark patch is something else!

You beat me to the answer. Mammoth is easy to distinguish from modern elephant. Mastodon, however, is very similar to modern elephant.

I’m trying to figure out if I suck it up and pay the flipper on site by the bay or wait for another drop. I really like the desert ironwood lamb foot and hesitated on the latest release because I just didnt like it as much and thought “why not let someone that really wants it get it”. I dont see the flipper market really being a thing here. At the rates folks are selling these I cant imagine they are making more than a few bucks after fees and shipping.

I'd say keep trying. Patience, perseverance, and forming good relationships here by extending the spirit of kindness and generosity pay off.

I was on the verge of giving up but eventually found the right checkout rhythm and now I have two.

Feeding the scalpers just encourages them, and if they're emboldened enough - they run roughshod over the entire hobby. Look at the awful mess the "sneakerheads" are in.

My 2 cents.

I too am ready to see more clips, and especially curious about the future two blades. Any bets on pen in front or pen in back?
