alcohol stove

I have 3 alcohol stoves, all 3 are good stoves. I think its a good idea to have the ones made for the swiss army, great stoves. Your friend at the post Donld S.

A Trangia burner in good condition will hold 3 fluid ounces of fuel, enough for about 30 mins. of burning. Further, the stove can be filled up, the lid screwed down and it will not leak when thrown into your hunting pack. It probably won't hold alcohol for a year, but will definately hold it perfectly, for a couple of days straight.

I want to thank the folks here who pointed me in the direction of the Trangia through this thread. Got mine last week. Great little stove. I've made hot chocolate and ramen with it already. I may pick up another for the wife's pack along with a pack of spare O-rings.

Anybody have a line on a small bottle (1 to 2 ounces) with the type of flip-up spout pictured below? I have the 8-ounce bottle pictured, and it's handy, but I would like to find a small one I could actually pack inside my mug for very short day-hikes (just enough fuel for one burn).

Does anyone know if the replacement simmer rings and rubber o-rings available for the newer Trangia stoves will fit the older surplus swiss stove?

REI sells a variety of those little flip nozzle bottles. Clikstand.com has them as well, and you can order them with a titanium clikstand and pot :D

I have the bottle pictured, but it is leaky.

For my alcohol stove, I use an empty Camp Suds liquid soap bottle. It is just a couple ounces in capacity, fits inside my small pot with the alky stove, and has the spout cap.

Hey Guyon, I recommend using hand sanitizer bottles. The pocket sized ones are 60 mL (2 oz) and have the flip nozzel you like. You can find them in any drugstore for $1 or so. You probably have 10 or so kicking around from the H1N1 scare.

Thanks for the leads on the flip-spout bottles.

Did your gasket come unglued and fall out? Mine did (on the non-flip cap). Fortunately, I saw it, recovered it, and hot-glued it back in place. It's just a thin piece of foam though. I thought about cutting out a round piece of rubber gasket instead. May still do it.

All the ones I have around here have the flip top instead of the flip nozzle.

I'll have to check. If I squeeze it moderately, it will leak through the non-flip cap. It looks like the same sort of bottle that Sta-Bil comes in, so maybe I can steal a gasket out of that (I have a nearly empty one out in the garage).

I bought a couple of 4oz bottles made by Gear Pods for alcohol storage from goingear at the last gunshow I attended. You may check with Storl.

Man, I bet that's what happened. Mine wasn't glued in very well, and it just popped out. It is just a circle of thin foam cut to fit exactly inside the lid. If you look in the lid and there's no gasket whatsoever, you can fashion one out of thin rubber pretty easy. Even an old piece of inner tube might work if you cut it to fit.

I just tested out a Swedish mess kit on loan from Magnussen. I have to eat my words about the supercat. The trianga is just amazing!

Guyon - yeah the hand sanitizers just have the pop open cap rather than a flip up nozel. You can get the flip nozzels filled with DEET repellent, they are typically 50 mL. For obvious reason's you'll want to clean them well. Muskol and jungle juice both have those types of bottles.

I think it's well worth the dough too. An amazing value actually. Stove and stand for less than $20. Plus... long burn times, simmer cap, and ability to store fuel. Top notch.

Hi guys! i just ordered a tangia alcohol stove, whats youre take on these? i saw the reviews on youtube and it seems pretty darn good for the money, what else brands out there would you guys recommend. i really dont care for the soda pop models cause of the simple fact that they crush to easy. so if there are any other more durable models out there list em here. i think i may start collecting these along with my knives.

I've never owned a trangia, but I've considered buying one just to add to my gear. For an alcohol stove I do just use soda pop can models i make myself. I've never had a problem with crushing mine. I usually carry two of them at a time in a plastic container that you buy cake frosting in along with a simple wire potstand. I imagine all alcohol stoves work best with cozy's. I have one for my pot made out of sleeping pad material and aluminum foil. Works great and quick and easy way to make tea or some ramen noodles out on the trail.

I've been singing the praises of these things for a reason ;)

White Box stove for me. It and Starbucks Via instant coffee have made me a happy camper :)

+1 on the white box stove although mine doesn't have those rivets sticking out.

Since the burn holes are on the side it's easy to kick a flat spot to rest it on and just put a cup directly on the stove.

I have a Trangia and that's a lot heavier so I only use it on trips where I'm doing more than just boiling 16-18oz of water at a time.

HEY Revolverman
the new rubber o-rings work in the older military trangia & svea alcohol burners. the new simmer rings have a diffrent thred pattern but can be made to work. old and new caps won't inter change
