alcohol stoves

Here is a pic of my "Kitchen Bag" that I carry in my Rescue Gear.

The kitchen bag is nylon, with webbing reinforcement. Brass d-rings at the top help secure it, along with a 550 cord drawstring. Attached to the outside by a carabiner is a small bottle of Denatured Alcohol.

Inside are my Titanium cup/pot, a pack of trioxane tablets, my 20 year old alcohol stove with a stand, and a folding spoon.

Quick cuppa Joe in the field makes a huge difference, lemme tell ya!!
Have a great weekend everybody!

Hey Rescue Mike,

As I started to read your post, I was thinking that I should take a picture of my alcohol stove and lo and behold, as they say, you have it in your picture. I've had it for a few years (can't even remember how many now) and it works well. It seemed to me that the rash of DIY alcohol stoves from beer/pop cans were modelled after this stove.

I buy Fondue fuel from the dollar store. These stoves are a bit slow, but never break down! No pumps, no priming, etc. BTW, did you ever try the Trangia trick in the winter of sitting the stove in a pan of alcohol (lit) to preheat the stove to increase pressure? (See previous post in this thread).

With this one, it seems to preheat just fine.. With the "Penny Stove" style of DIY pop can stoves, they seem to require the pan preheating.

I do agree with you Doc, they are a bit slower, but they always work!

would a standard trangia simmer ring fit on one of those burners that come with the swedish messkit? and would i be able to still my own fuel? or have my neighbor do it? he got a reflux still and runs lots of stuff with the ethl alcohol with his fancy tax stamps that he doesnt acctully add any meths to it so he ends up with something similar to everclear except its more like an overproofed moonshine.....

Rescue Mike, I built a Soda-can stove, works well.
I'm going to go for another, and make some improvements.

I haven't used it below 32°F , or above 3000ft. but, to pre-heat the Soda-Can alchohol stoves, fill as normal, dribble some liquid on the outside walls, then light it. It burns off real fast, and is just enough to warm the outer wall of the can. (Of course, making sure you don't light the forest on fire)

I had to bump this thread back up to the top because I just built a super cat stove and wanted to share these pics. Simple and cheap to make, more info here

Here is the stove with optional base, I highly recommend it.

It will easily bring two cups of water to a rolling boil in about five minutes although I have not tried this under adverse conditions.

Puts out a nice flame using denatured alcohol.

Thanks for the link, IUKE12. It looks like a bare bones simple stove to build, yet has good stove potential.
