All around best Becker for camping

Bk5. Best all arounder in the camp. Bk2 is great but a little heavy artillery for car camping

What Clich Said, As a camp knife the BK-5 is hard to beat.

I have a 1,2,3,5,6,7,9,10, and what ever that Ritter thing is. I bought the 5 last. Had I known It would have come a lot sooner.

It excels at camp chores especially if they include preparing food, just a great all purpose blade. Everyone here will give you a different answer and they will all be right. It boils down to what you like in a knife, and how it will be used. Might want to hold out for a tweener, I'm betting they will be nice also.

Just wanted to add...even after I gave up on the new stuff and ran like a scared kid to his momma (the Bk9) in order to handle the manlier tasks like batoning and making long oak trees into short oak firelogs...the BK9 still cut great after all that abuse.

If I had to take just one, I'd probably grab the 10. Faster and lighter than the BK2, so it does the small stuff just fine. I can still baton with it, and since you classified this as one Becker, I can still have my axe with me.

I would say The King9

the 2 is great too..but the 9 performs a bit better for what you specified.

ah hell....

the Beast2 is great too. buy both LOL

My Bk2 is getting the job done for me. If I had a Bk9, though, that would probably make the trip as well.

Have you come to any conclusion cole? I'd love to hear you picked a Becker, but I'd just as happy to hear you found one that fits you perfectly.

I am more of a folder guy and spend my knife money on Spyderco's primarily, but with the camping season coming up, I want to get a proper fixed blade. I have some Winchester or something that is decent I guess, but you know I want something I can be proud of. I do not know if a Becker is what I will get, but if I go with that which one do you think I should get or about what size should I get? I do not plan to necessarily carry it while hiking so it will be thrown in a pack and then just kept around the campsite (think car camping, so not really needing a survival specialist or anything). I will be batoning and shaving off pieces as well so a gigantic chopper is not what I had in mind. Becker seems to have a strong and loyal following so what do you guys think my one car-camping Becker should be?

I'll be in Indy/Castleton next week for the new REI grand opening if you wanna meet me there. I could bring some BK&Ts, if you wanna check any of them out. I doubt a Jeep full of 1095 Cro-van will get me kicked out of the city.

I hope NCCole doesn't mind me piggybacking on this thread but I have a similar dilemma and thought it would be better to join this thread than start a new one.

I have a 2, 14 (and a 16 coming, maybe a 15 too!). The smaller knives IMO are great hiking/belt knives, but want something larger/choppier for pack carry/camp use and would like thoughts on the 9 vs the Machax as a companion to one of the smaller knives?

Proof you spend some time around here ;) I love my 9 and have never gotten my hands on a machax so i cant really compare. I am sure someone who has both will chime in with their opinion.

Do you care about the weight?

Of the two you listed for the reasons listed:

I personally would choose the Machax for it's power, the way the point is made gives it similar chopping power to a hatchet, and is good for clearing brush, yet still a great bush crafter.

The 9 is a great all around knife, it has the chopping power that you want, the length you need for clearing brush, and the belly for finer work, and it's nimble so I've heard.

My personal opinion outside of your listed preferences:

Get both. :D (please note: I own neither of these knives, but plan to in the future.)

Welcome to the forums, have a great time here, I have!

Do not mind at all, I am new to Becker's so the more general discussion and size and use comparison the better. I am by the way narrowing it down to the 5 or the 7. The two has been labeled as great but too hefty (and maybe a tad short) for what I want, and the 9 may be pushing the size limit for me personally. It is hard to tell because I have never had a blade bigger than 5 inches though.

I would get the 7, I know everyone else is gonna say get the 5, but I'll play devils advocate, the 7 is choppier than the 5, the 5 is more slicy than the 7.

I missed your reply originally and just saw it. I appreciate the willingness to do that. When exactly will you be there? I did not know they were opening an REI store (I have an REI Kingdom 6 that rocks, maybe I can check out the vestibule), and do not go to that part of town often (traffic sucks), but I may make a trip to check out some knives and the new store.

No worries, I understand it should be around awhile. It was officially open today, but the grand opening isn't until the 21st. I'll be there after 3 :30 pm. I can send you a reminder when I go. I wanna go opening day because they give out gift cards and raffles. I hope to get lucky like Ark.

Lots of good choices, if it's for the car weight and size don't necessarily matter..
I would say 4,5,7, or 10. I have a 10, waiting on a 4 and will eventually get the SuperScalper (5;)) On the smaller side I like the 11 better than the 14 and am patiently waiting on the tweeners like everyone else, feeling the 15, and 17, but we'll see, good luck choosing!

This one knife thing, Crazy talk!!!!!!:). I always take the bk2, and bk14 for the lighter stuff. The bk16 is going to be hard to beat though.

Until I got my 16 I would have said BK2. Now I say BK16 unless you expect you will be batoning - then it may as well be a BK9.

Once you get it in your hands... The BK16 will be your favorite.... Can't wait to really put it through its paces...
