All of a sudden I'm a knife snob.

I think it's a sickness.
If it's only "discretionary income " being used and not creating any domestic problems , that one thing .

If it's causing problems and pain , then by definition it's a disease . šŸ¤”

Personally , I have a budget . If exceeded , I cut off knife buying until I'm even again .

Very simple . Not always easy , but still simple ! ;)

It's absolutely only discretionary income. I was just being facetious.

I earn bonus pay and overtime pay quite frequently. My tax return also goes into my discretionary fund. Last year, everything went towards my medical expenses. This year? I've earned the right to indulge. So far this year, I've earned the equivalent of a week's worth of pay in bonuses-completely unexpectedly!

So, I'm shopping now...

Get your juice in where you can, little happies in life are a necessary boost! But also... keep your powder dry ;)

I've bought a few expensive knives in the past few years and I appreciate them, but they are more collectables than users. I carry a Spyderco K390 Police4 and a Cold Steel Recon-1. There's a utilitarian aspect to an effective and easily replaceable knife that goes along with good bang for the buck efficiency.

Makes collecting a bit tougher when 70% of your income goes poof......šŸ™„..........

Still where there's a will........šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘

I'll do my best!

I hope good news reaches you quickly!

Welcome to the club! Some people appreciate the advantages of quality tools and are capable and willing to pay for it. Some want a lower cost option.

Philosophically, I am in your camp. I’d rather have one $500 knife than ten $100 knives. It may be that I don’t abuse mine. I suspect my time in the army and handling different rifles is also factor.

My advice is simply to embrace what works for you and enjoy.

I never have, and never will let that happen. I'm just at the point where instead of buying a $50-$100 knife every payday just to get a "fix", I would rather save my pennies for a while and buy a really nice knife every few months.

for instance, I just bought my fourth Hinderer yesterday. It has taken me a year to get that many.

Nice! It took me 30 years to get my four Sebenzas, one Mnandi, and one Grimsmo Rask.

I would have been fine with two Sebenzas and the Mnandi.

ive become a snob too.....different kind though.....

I'm only really impressed anymore with a maker who makes a high quality knife with good materials and can sell it so normal working folks can afford to buy it and use it.......

Sadly every year there seems to be less and less that impress me.........

Well put sir! If one looks at my knife acquisition cost for ā€œquality productsā€ over the past several years, it’s much likened to a bell curve. Thanks to age and income, I’m on the back side of the curve now: simply hunting the ā€œquality bargain productsā€ that catch my eye. In some respects it’s just as much fun but perhaps more of a challenge!

Hmm. I appreciate good designs and good steel, from my humble Hultafors to my Sebbie 21... and the Buck Custom Shop 110 in Magnacut and elk grips I'm waiting on.

I have four Hinderers, and four CRKs, plus "a few" Spydercos, ZTs, and Benchmades lying around here. For several years, no matter what new knife I bought, I'd always go back the a CRK in less than a week.

But I've become a different kind of snob too. For a little more than a year now I've been carrying a Buck 112 almost every day. I like the heft & feel in hand, and it's just more comfortable to use. If a person doesn't like the 420HC or S30V steels, Buck's Custom Shop offers models in S35VN, and Magnacut for about 1/4 the price of a Hinderer or CRK. Plus, they're made in the USA, and have a lifetime no BS warranty.

I’ve always had champagne taste with a beer budget but I have been fortunate enough to have a couple higher quality knives. I’ve also always liked the finer things (a little more than I probably should). That said, I’ve grown to have almost the same level of appreciation for my G-Shocks and Spydercos as I do for my Longines and Arno Bernard (and my Carothers). I say ā€œalmostā€ because I will always appreciate higher quality work and higher end materials [exclusivity too (comparatively speaking)] more than something that is mass produced with cheaper materials and less finely refined.

I have been retired since 2003.. Was relativly active till 2019 when I went into a series of joint related surgeries with rehab complications. Used to fill myh pockets with wallet, keys, Leatherman and even a tiny flashlight. Now-a-days not so often and not so much.

On the other hand, I seem to have a few additional dolars available that are not committed to rent/mortgage, groceries and or gas . . .leaving me with the ability to indulge in modestly extra vent (for me) gift giving. Fiftieth anniversary lastg year was food for my wife. Or son's 45yh birthday involved a CRK Sebenza for him . . .the most expensive non-essential knife I've ever bought.

Now I am thinking of myself some. Got an heirloom pocket watch serviced/repaired. Might have a WW-II battlr map restored , conserved, preserved and mounted. Also thinking of some sort of "gent's knife" for my pocket. Got a William Henry from e-Bay last month; a modest low-end (for WH) thing with Damascus blade . . .but its too small for my hand. Thinking of something larger in size but still not gaudy pocket jewelry. I was given a large Spyerco, and its a good knife, but I just don't like it.

A CRK Sebenza or another CRK might be it, but I'm not really there with the CRK models either. Maybe if they made a flipper or assisted opening, but dream on. . .I do like their "Backpacker", but don't need a fixed blade.

Oh well, plenty of time to think it over and look at the possibilities. Maybe I'll go to a Blade Show event.

$300 seems to be the minimum. I haven't found the top end yet, but I have an Hinderer that cost me $600, and another that was $500.

I'm considering a CRK for my next purchase, and won't think twice about dropping 5 to 6 hundo on it.

Been looking at Medford lately too.

and Les George, and...

...I really think I have a problem.
You haven’t made it to the next level of snobbines till you get your first Les George! Then the rest really become junk. šŸ˜Ž

I feel ya though. But I’m more bored with generic knife designs and only really get excited when I see something really unique and different but still functional.

I have grown to appreciate a high quality piece of cutlery. I got my first ZT back in 2016 or so, and it showed me what you can expect of a $200 folder. I bought my first CRK in 2019 as a grail purchase, and it showed me what you get at $400+. During the pandemic, I had cash but not much to shoot, so instead of purchasing firearms, I bought Microtechs and Spartans. I really dig what you can get in terms of a $500+ budget.

However, as of late, I keep falling back on Cold Steel. I love my expensive knives, but when I want to use a knife hard and not really sweat it, there isn't much a $90 Recon 1 in S35VN can't handle that I need to bust out my $550 SHF in Magnacut in terms of a work knife.

I still have a lot of expensive folders and OTF autos on my list, but my hunger has subsided a bit.

Look forward to seeing that 110!

Please brag about it in the latest acquisitions thread.
