All this talk of guns....

Let's see.....one $2000 Wilson CQB 45 ACP plus a Kimber 22LR conversion unit at $300 and $700 worth of ammo.....There...that'd do it :D

No way I could spend that in JUST .22 LR ammo. (Man I wish!) That figure also includes shotgun shells, clays, foamies, and other miscellaneous items for outings. As far as .22 Ammo I stick with the bricks of Federal cheap stuff for the most part, although I do get serious with the Gold Medal, and similarly priced stuff now and then. I also went through a kick of shooting CCI Shorts for awhile. (May some day give in to the dark side and get a supressed .22):D

Sorry Dave, But I'm useless to the debate re: .22 LR barrel longevity. I shoot an average of 500-750 rounds of .22 a weekend and on the occassional holiday, with about 150-200 rounds of shotgun shells (12 and 20 ga.) for about five months, then when things freeze up, I hole up, tinker with my guns and stock up for the next thaw. I did wear out a Marlin model 60 and a Nylon 66 when I was a kid, but...that was without a specific ammo count.

I primarily shoot a Remington 541 that I've only had two or three years, so...it's gonna be awhile...

Also, I frequently take along centerfire rifles that I'm tinkering with. blow up some ice chunks with the Sharps, rescope the Scout Rifle, run a couple hundred rounds through the handguns now and then, test shoot the latest toy to come in the door, etc.'

That being said...I do continue a primary focus on my .22's, and get out alot more than I used to, and have alot more fun.

Sorry to disappoint you guys....I'm just a part timer like the rest of y'all!:o :o

What with all this talk of shooting and the nice weather coming on, you guys inspired me to load up some Gold Dots for the model 19 today. She just got new Pachmayr combat grips last week to replace those tiny wooden girly-grips, and now there's a plateful of gourmet 158 grain hollow-points ready to serve hot. :)

I've never heard of controlled expansion defensive ammunition referred to as gourmet before.

I may be the only person in the U.S. who didn't like his .22 Single Six, with the spare mag. cylinder. But I truly loathed that revolver.

Have fun with whatever you get. Shoot the bejaysus out of it. See if you can start with good habits, it becomes much easier than correcting bad ones later on. Be nice if you had a knowledgeable friend to start learning with. Things are remarkable if you have someone to whom to remark.

Wear ear protection, even little foam plugs, if you would, please. Yes, even outside.

Thank you.
You aint !
That chit is scrap !

First Bruise, now Heber. I just hope you guys (you know who you are) are proud of yourselves, turning good, peace loving, khukri nuts into wild eyed pistoleros. Won't be long, they'll both be prowling the gun shows looking for inexpensive ChiCom assault rifles and drum magazines (no Bruise, those aren't printed periodicals about drummers). ;)

Hi Sarge:

Well said!

Hollowdweller has steered me toward some interesting old military pieces (although he doesn't know it) and I'm applying for my C&R license do to his posts. Just got a case of AK ammo as a result of his tip real cheap.

You out there HD? Want to say, thanks.

I was shooting my .30 carbine Ruger Blackhawk yesterday. I laid away a .45 Colt Blackhawk (used) with the 7 1/2" barrel just like the Blackhawk on Friday.

I'd get a .22 for a first pistol though and you can't go wrong with Ruger.

To thread drift a bit anybody know the cheapest source for .45 LC ammo? It appears to be around 20 bucks for a box of 50. I can get the Wolf M1 Carbine ammo for 150 for 1000, so I'll probably be shooting that a lot more. That's about as cheap as it can be reloaded although the Wolf is non reloadable. I do have dies and about a zillion cases for the M1 since I've had a carbine since I was a teenager.

HD, I gotta know where to get cheap .30 carbine ammo.

Please?

An old school gun, made me go and dig out my copy of "No Second Place Winner".

I got mine from Sportsmans Guide and Midway USA for 150 for 1000.

That's plenty cheap for even the wife to shoot too!

Thanks, HD. I'll go look.

I've got a few M-1 carbines and they are probably my favorite rifle to shoot.

I'm sure I'd like my Garands better when I learn not to get my thumb crushed.

If you don't mind paying a little more, Jeff Bartlett at http://www.gibrass.com sometimes has reassembled GI .30 Carbine available: $225 per 1500, or $200 per 1500 if two or more cans are purchased. (Which actually makes it the same cost as the Wolf in bulk, but who the heck is going to shoot 3000 rounds of this?)

I like the Wolf quite a bit.

I got a catalog from Sportsman's Guide yesterday. They have the Wolf .30 M1 on sale for 147 for 1000 142 if you have a buyers club card.

Guys, thanks for the comments, sugestions and jokes. :) Sure makes a guy feel good when others are so willing to help. Looks like I'll invest in the .22 first and go from there.

I'm sitting here infront of the computer reading the posts, while listening to Celtic Bagpipe music and eating Pot Roast. And all the while, thinking I should pickup the .22 before the campout I'm planning so I can do a little plinking while I'm in the mountains..... Or should I buy some more camp gear first? I have 1 sleeping bag with me (2 more at mom's house along with a cot or two) and 2 Thermarest pads, a self inflating and a closed cell foam one, 3 day packs, enough cast iron and other cookwear to handle cooking for about 10, along with over 40 knives, khukuris and hatches. Ropes, First Aid kits, Jerky (Freshly made from beef and Chicken I might add) and other misolanius things. lol!!

Hi HD:

About the steel cases. They don't damage a rifle chamber or feed ramp? Break extractors? I am so hung up on brass cases.

Can you guys fill me in on the use of steel cases in semi-auto mil surp rifles?
